Chosen Road has carved a singular niche in the musical landscape with their world-class Appalachian instrumentation combined with a passion for sharing and living the Gospel. Comprised of founding member Jonathan Buckner, along with Zachary Alvis, Tyler Robertson and Josh Hicks, the group has been carefully honing their craft since 2009, releasing six albums and performing at festivals, fairs, churches and theatres across the United States as well as overseas. Their 2020 recording, Appalachian Worship, reached #4 on Billboard's Top Bluegrass Albums chart, and remained a fixture there for a notable 30 weeks. On November 12th Chosen Road released Appalachian Hymns, produced by the group’s Zachary Alvis and Tyler Robertson. The 12-song collection pairs the band's unparalleled acoustic instrumentation and vocal harmonies with classic songs of faith and the Church.

Jonathan Buckner from Chosen Road is this week's guest.

My guest this week on Voices in my Head is singer and songwriter, Becca Jordan. Her new album, Becoming Ordinary, Debuted last month to great acclaim and she’s here to speak with me about it this week.

—Rick Lee James

I'm a wandering songbird. I earned my B.A. in Communications from University in Alabama-Huntsville. It was during college doing all that writing that I started dabbling in songwriting.  I recorded my first EP, Love Shows Up, in 2012 with Robbie Seay producing.

I moved to Nashville in 2015, worked at a non-profit, started singing in church and absorbing the creative community through concerts and coffee dates with fellow creatives. I traveled to L’Abri in England in the fall of 2016, where I soaked up the reality that the Lord is Lord over all things, stuff like cooking and washing dishes, not just mysterious creative processes like songwriting. I came back to Nashville to plant some roots and started working with the elderly.  (Not on purpose, really, but because God has a sense of humor. I needed to learn some things I could only learn with them.) So I spent four years learning and observing the goodness of God in what felt like a quiet corner with folks that taught me what it meant to place my whole life before God as an offering. This is what my record, Becoming Ordinary, is about— leaving behind all the illusions of what I thought my life would be, and picking up what it is— mundane, sometimes deeply lonely, sometimes fraught with joy, and mostly just very ordinary— and giving it to God.

A documentary film directed by Ryan Patch, For Love of Neighbor: Politics for the Common Good tells the stories of three individuals—Sen. Tim Scott, Justin Giboney, and Sarah Imboden—who, on different levels and in distinct ways, are seeking to engage faithfully in contemporary American politics.

The film does not provide specific answers for how Christians should engage in politics: prescribing who they should vote for or what specific policies they should support. Instead, it explores foundational questions about the purpose (and limits) of politics and the proper Christian posture toward government and secular society. Ultimately, the film aims to spark further discussion and offer a hopeful vision for Christian participation in contemporary public life.

Bestselling author, popular preacher and teacher, Will Willimon, has just published one of his liveliest books, God Turned Toward Us: The ABCs of the Christian Faith. “The challenge of the Christian life is learning to talk Christian. Somebody has got to tell us, give us the words that open the door to the faith called Christian,” says Will in his introduction.

The book takes terms like Atonement, Christ, Incarnation, Justice, Creed and speaks about them in wonderfully accessible ways.

The vocabulary begins with an essay on, Abortion, and runs all the way to Zacchaeus.

Will’s signature humor and mischievousness comes through, along with his truth-telling witness to the theological riches of the Christian faith. Bishop Kenneth Carder calls this a “sometimes jarring, always interesting, consistently insightful, and persistently provocative invitation to ‘talk the talk and walk the walk’ of Christian discipleship.” Whether a new or longstanding Christian, God Turned Toward Us is sure to enliven your faith.

Dr. William Willimon currently serves as Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School and oversees the Doctor of Ministry program there. Will has served as Bishop for the United Methodist Church in northern Alabama for eight years. A prolific author and preacher, Will continues to serve the Church by offering an unapologetic attempt to articulate the language of the Christian faith on the page and in various pulpits around the country.
