Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast)

With lyrics like "Woe to you rich man.." and "be sure your sin will find you out," Weston Skaggs wastes no time in diving deep into themes that are taken directly from the Bible on his new single, "Rich Man" set to release through Old Bear Records on July 16th.  Much like Keith Green, or Larry Norman before him, Weston Skaggs's style of a mix of baritone and falsetto voice undergirded and wrapped with music and arrangements that could have been written and arranged by Brian Wilson or the Flaming Lips attracts a listening ear to the interesting instrumentation at play that softens the very direct and powerful truths conveyed in his lyrics.

By the time you realize you are being challenged with a song that could double as a sermon, its too late.  You're already invested by the sweeping sounds, and pleasant melodies coming through your speakers or air pods.  In a way, "Rich Man" is an audio trojan horse of sorts and we're here for it. This is a song that is clear in its presentation of the Gospel and its primary transgressor in need of grace (you'll find as you reach the end of the song) is the performer himself.

Weston Skaggs joins me today for a conversation about his latest single, RICH MAN.

Hello Friends,

The Podcast is taking a brief hiatus due to a death in the family. I explain more in this short episode today. I’m grateful to all of you who listen week after week, both nationally and internationally.

In the meantime, one of the best ways to support me and my family in the hiatus is by listening to my music, sharing it with friends and pre-saving my upcoming singles on Spotify. I would really appreciate it if you would pre-save my upcoming music on Spotify. The release dates are below as well as links where the songs can be pre-saved.

Thank you again for listening to Voices In My Head, and I look forward to being back with you soon.

Blessings,

Rick Lee James

Rev. Sherry Cothran, M.Div., has served as senior pastor in United Methodist congregations in Nashville and Chattanooga, TN, for a decade. Formerly a recording artist on Mercury Records, she is an award-winning singer/songwriter and author of two books. Sherry has released four solo CD’s, her music has been featured in t.v. and film. She’s shared stages with hit rock acts such as Goo Goo Dolls, Bare Naked Ladies, Spin Doctors and K’s Choice and toured around the world as the lead singer of a popular rock band, The Evinrudes, before entering seminary and becoming an ordained, United Methodist minister. As a pastor of a multi-cultural, urban church, Sherry began to share stories on her blog, “Peddling Hope in Dystopia” of everyday sacred encounters with those who were labeled “refugee,” “immigrant” and “homeless.” She later shared them in a book that became beloved by readers, Tending Angels: Stories From the Frontlines of Heaven and Earth. Her writing was featured in publications such as Abingdon Women, Interpreter Magazine and Ministry Matters. She was also a regular contributor to the homiletics journal, Good Preacher. She was the artist in residence in 2015 at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and received two grants to develop her creative writing from the Louisville Institute for Pastoral Study. Her story has been featured in various publications including USA Today. Recently, she became the founder and president of the nonprofit, Beloved Woman, a ministry that helps women who are financially disadvantaged to become self-employed or find a pathway to a living wage. She tours regularly, performing, speaking and leading workshops.

In her new book, Wild and Holy Prophets, Warriors, Harlots & Healers: Women of the Bible, Sherry takes us out into the Bible’s uncharted regions, beyond those selected scriptures that have often been used to tame the feminine spirit, to meet the wild and holy women of the Bible. Blending the brightest in biblical scholarship with her vast experiences, Rev. Sherry Cothran leads us into healing encounters with the Bible’s lost stories of women who were warriors, prophets, harlots, and healers. The book and 10 original songs call us to live free, faithful, and fearless lives. In the pages and songs of Wild and Holy you’ll find new narratives from old stories and awaken to the image of a loving God within.

I am so glad to welcome my friends Matt Anderson and Ben De Bono back on the show to celebrate 10 years of their amazing podcast community, The Sci-Fi Christian, which has been a huge help and inspiration to me over the years.

--Rick Lee James

The Sci-Fi Christian, in all its iterations, is about the collision between faith and nerdom. We believe that good genre fiction is about more than just entertainment. We seek to engage with the themes and philosophies behind our favorite stories, wrestling with the big ideas within speculative fiction. We’re unabashedly nerdy and unabashedly Christian. Even if your faith background differs from ours, we look forward to interacting with you at The Sci-Fi Christian!

Although many people today reject Christianity for intellectual reasons, greater numbers of people are rejecting Christianity because it does not engage their imagination. Christians must not only demonstrate that the Christian worldview is true, but that it is also good, beautiful, and relevant. The Good News of the Return of the King: The Gospel in Middle-earth is a book that endeavors to show the truth, goodness, and beauty of Jesus Christ, the gospel, and the biblical metanarrative by engaging the imagination through J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, as well as The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. In this book, Michael T. Jahosky proposes that J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is a story about what Jesus' parables are about: the good news about the return of the king. As a work of imaginative fiction similar to Jesus' parables, The Lord of the Rings can bypass both intellectual and imaginative objections to the gospel and pull back the "veil of familiarity" that obscures the gospel for many.

Michael T. Jahosky is the author of The Good News of the Return of the King: The Gospel in Middle-Earth and he has stopped by the podcast for a visit on this episode.

Shawn D. Congleton has lived a life on the move; moving nearly 80 times before he graduated and living in almost 20 states. Since that time, he has spent most of it in Ohio with his wife, Heidi and three girls, Morgan, Jordan, and Brooklyn. Shawn’s new book, Never Settled: A Memoir of a Boy on the Road to Manhood, is An emotional and brutally honest story that focuses in a large part on Shawn’s relationship with his father. Shawn shares about his fears, his sense of despair and the losses that impacted his formative years as he endured abuse both physical and mental. I’ve known Shawn for almost 20 years and I didn’t even know the half of his remarkable story.
