This week's guest, James, stops by and shares his journey with us. Not only has James discovered sobriety and recovery, but his life is dramatically different in almost every way. From his time in school as a youth when he dropped out until we catch up with him while he's finishing his doctorate. Anything is possible, thank you James we appreciate you.
This week's guest, Adam, stopped by and shared their story. Although his early life brought a lot of fear, the childhood he had seemed normal. It wasn't until later in his life that Adam would recognize some of the difficulties he overcame. He was introduced to the principles and concepts of twelve step recovery by his father. Adam joined the Canadian military and he found himself suffering in silence because it was illegal to be gay and in the military at that time. It had been illegal in Canada not long before the military changed their views. Thank you for standing strong Adam and for making the world a little safer for all of queer humans!
This week's guest, Danielle stops by and shares her incredible journey with us. She is a harm reduction advocate yet after sitting with her, getting to know her even just a little bit, it is obvious that she is a human advocate. She not only hopes for, but works towards a more compassionate and tolerant world in which people don't have to be further shamed in order to obtain help. She is a strong advocate for alternative treatment options other than the twelve step models. Her experience within some of these programs sheds light on the potential and often darker side of things. This dark side is equally as real as the life saving capabilities of any potential program. We get into it about forced treatment under the guise of compassionate intervention and neither of us believe it is the way forward. Thank you so much Danielle.
This week's guest, Nicole, stops by and shares her amazing story. Her story of addiction, self destruction, hopelessness, perseverance, self-discovery, and so much more doesn't stop in the shadows. She found herself waiting to be set free once she found her way into a life of recovery and that is what has happened. She has found the courage and freedom to become her authentic self. We are so grateful for you, Nicole. Thank you for being unapologetically you
This week my good friend, Michelle Robinson comes on to talk about the end of genocide for Palestinians - how closely related the issues across the oceans are to Black, Indigenous and People of Colour here in Canada. We talk about how law enforcement uses stacking charges to not only ensure higher rates of convictions, plea deals, but how it is also used to discredit the humans experiencing this "phenomenon". Sadly we also discussed the resurgence of violence and resistance to 2s+lgbtq rights across Turtle Island. Thank you so much Michelle, I am honoured by your friendship and your openness. Always so much love. Find her podcast, Native Calgarian, here: https://www.nativecalgarian.com/podcast
We are incredibly grateful to kick off the Voices in Recovery Podcast, 6th season by sharing our good friend, Breaden's story. He also shared about his beautiful project; "Coming Out Boxes" for folks coming out! How helpful it would have been for myself to have the support of community immediately upon stepping across that often terrifying threshold. Thank you so much, we love you!
This week Darcy and I sit down to chat...again. This recording was the Voices in Recovery Podcast's 5th anniversary! We talk about Pride, the anti Lgbtq2s hate that seems to be on the rise, death and grief, and some excitement over a potential new location for Freedom’s Path Recovery Society. Thank you for your continued support; for listening and for participating with us - sharing your incredible journies.
This week Darcy and I sat down and discussed the past, the present, and how hopeful we are for the possible future of Freedom’s Path Recovery Society. We began in order to meet the needs of humans, who find themselves in distress from a number of human conditions and potentially have fallen through gaps in services. We as a group of humans wanting to help other humans continues to be our main focus and purpose. In order to find our center, we have made some new choices.
This week's guest, Chuck D. Stops by and shares his experience, strength and hope with us. His journey has been one of many ups and downs; from trouble in school to being sent away to boarding school. Moving from boarding school back to public school, his behaviour and using life continued to progress in a steady, downward spiral, causing many changes in locations where the results remained the same, an unmanageable life. Not only is this guy a successful actor, but he's a full blown rocker, I'll leave the rest up to him! Thank you Chuck, we appreciate you.
This week's guest, Peter, stopped by and shared his experience, strength and hope with us. It never ceases to amaze me just how incredible human beings are.
