In this episode, Ted sits down with Dr. Charles Helm from Tumbler Ridge.

Dr. Helm is quite literally a trailblazer. He came to the Peace country in the 1980s. He co-founded one of BC's most popular races. He's helped to create and clear some of the most popular hiking trails in Tumbler Ridge, and he's helped bring the world's attention to a simply wonderful pocket of BC through his work with the Tumbler Ridge Museum and the Tumbler Ridge Global Geo Park. He is also blazingly fast when you try and catch up with him and running behind him.

Our next guests, plural, are people well, who’ve been part of the community for as long as I can remember. Quite selfishly, I remember wanting to be these two people. I remember taking my dogs to them, well, my parents, taking my dogs to them, and having these two people answer questions about my dog, take care of the dog, and ultimately, help me through the grief of losing my dog. These people are special: they travel all over the Peace to make sure that herds are healthy, that animals are taken care of, and that the community can thrive. They educate, they heal, they support; and, they’re just all-around good people to know. Welcome to my next guests, Dr. Corinne and Dr. Perry Spitzer!

Our next guest is quite special for numerous reasons. For one, she was the president of the North Peace Filcan Association for numerous years, helping to create and foster a sense of welcome, and safety for new and not-so-new Filipino Canadians who had moved to Fort St. John.

For two, it was a lot of fun because she actually does what Ted does in this podcast- she finds amazing people, and she sits down with them. She has wonderful and illuminating conversations, so our host was excited to get the chance to ask her some things!

My next guest could write a book with everything they’ve seen and experienced. In fact, if they did write a book, I’d love to read it (and there is maybe a book coming!). You see, when things went wrong in this City, he, and his crew, were there to fix it. When someone was hurt, they rush out to help. When something was on fire, they’d be on their way. On top of all of that, they’ve helped inspire actors, town councils, and more.

And recent times have really highlighted how important our frontline and emergency responders are to the safety and health of our community. I asked him to be on the show today because I wanted to know more about the history of our emergency services so that we can celebrate those who’ve helped to make our city what it is. From the Fort St. John firefighting services, please welcome Larry Evans.

She’s a mother, and grandmother, who only seems to get more and more involved in local sports and local activities. She’s a tireless advocate for making sure that everyone has access in and around our city. She helps here in our town, and across our province. She’s run events, awareness campaigns, support meetings, and more. And I know that every time I talk to her, I’m struck by her kindness, her passion, and her wisdom. It’s my honour today to welcome Lori Slater to Voices of the Peace.

I first met our next guests when I worked in the North Peace Cultural Centre, years, ago. The first thing that I noticed about them is that they’re the hardest workers I’ve ever met, and in a town of hard workers, that’s quite a title. From there, I’ve watched them dive right into our community. They’ve bought a house here, they’ve opened a business here, they keep finding ways to give back to the community, and even though he wakes up at 1 am to get things started, they always seem to have time to stop, talk, and ask you how you are doing. My next two guests are perhaps the most generous people I’ve ever had the chance to work with and meet. Please welcome the owners of Cobbs Bakery, Hardik and Kretika.

He’s worked with our cyclists. He’s been a national speedskating champion, and what I admire the most is that he always has time to talk, find how you’re doing and is always eager to share a story or two.
