The Babylonian Legends of the Creation

and the Fight between Bel and the Dragon

A significant focus of the literature of the ancient Near East,

which includes the Bible, is the creation of the known world.

The clay tablets which were discoved in the ruins of the library

of King Ashurbanipal (B.C. 668-626) at Kuyunjik (Nineveh)

contain detailed descriptions of the views and beliefs

of the Babylonians and Assyrians about the Creation.

These tablets were worked through by George Smith,

who identified many of the historical inscriptions of

Shalmaneser II, Tiglath-Pileser III, Sargon II, Sennacherib,

Esarhaddon, and other kings mentioned in the Bible, and

several literary compositions of a legendary character.

In the course of this work Smith discovered fragments of

various versions of the Babylonian Legend of the Deluge,

and portions of several texts belonging to a work which treated

of the beginning of things, and of the Creation.

As the tablets are in a fragmentary condition, there are signifcant

gaps in the translation. However, enough of the text has survived

to present a substantial view of Babylonian theology.

Winnie the Pooh

Winnie-the-Pooh was Milne's first collection of stories about a fictional toy bear, which is owned by a boy called Christopher Robin, who was named after Milne's son, It was published in 1926. The stories also feature several characters modelled one of Christopher's other stuffed toys, including Piglet, Eyeore, Tigger, Kanga, Roo and Owl. The bear was originally named Edward, but was later renamed after a Canadian black bear called Winnie which was left to London Zoo during the First World War.

Unlike the escapades of a later fictional bear, Paddington, Winnie leads a fairly undramatic life, with a strong focus on neighbourly friendships and domestic harmony.

A second collection, The House at Pooh Corner, was published in 1928.

The Winnie the Pooh books are among the most popular works of children's literature, and have been adapted many times for presentation on stage, film and as audio dramatizations.

The Yellow Wallpaper

"The Yellow Wallpaper" is a short story by American feminist writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and was first published in January 1892 in The New England Magazine.

The story takes the form of a journal. A woman is diagnosed by her physician husband as suffering from temporary nervous depression. The couple move into an old mansion, occupying principally a nursery room with yellow wallpaper. To accelerate her recuperation, the woman is instructed to avoid working or writing, to eat well and get plenty of fresh air.

The narrator becomes obsessed with the patterns in the wallpaper behind which the narrator begins to believe a woman is trapped.

The action is set in the society of an arboreal race, known as Glugs, and described by the author "stupid race of docile folk". Although the book was not a commercial success, it is recognized today as one of Dennis' most accomplished productions.

Harmonium

Gryll Grange was Thomas Love Peacock's seventh and last novel and was written after the author's retirement from the India Office in 1856.

The plot, such as it is, follows the usual pattern of most of Peacock's earlier novels. A group of highly opinionated individuals gather at a remote country estate in Hampshire and indulge in lengthy conversations about issues of the day over extravagant dinners. The young and idealistic Algernon Falconer resides in the opulent country house with seven young "handmaidens', whom he calls "Vestals." A learned and garrulous local clergyman, Dr. Opimian, becomes a friend and confidant of Mr Falconer and decides that the young man would make a suitable husband for Morgana Gryll, a niece of one of his friends. However, Lord Curryfin, an amateur lecturer, falls in love with Morgana, and continues to pay her attentions until he suddenly transfers them to another young lady, a Miss Niphet. Mr Harry Hedgerow, a local rustic, falls in love with one of the Vestals, and provides companions who do the same with the rest of them. Algernon Falconer, being now completely free, overcomes his initial lack of resolution, and is finally betrothed to the youthful heiress who had been originally chosen for him. The other eight suitors are also accepted, and the nuptials of all nine couples are all performed in a single ceremony by the learned clergyman, who has done much to bring all the parties together, and whose final peroration brings the book to a close.

How Christianity Grew Out of Paganism

on various aspects of science and history, and a great many texts on religious topics.

This short treatise was published in 1943 as part of The Little Blue Books library, a collection of short works on a wide variety of subjects, published by the Haldeman-Julius Company of Girard, Kansas.
