I’m really proud of some of the names I’ve used for mixes I’ve recorded, and other times I look back and scratch my head. Maybe life was all over the place at the time and this mix felt “appropriate?” It’s a really wide survey mix that uses some pretty disparate sounds, but it gels.

My trance roots surface once again. The set dips in and out of atmospheric, but the true core is breaktrance. Beautiful high-energy trance hooks set against a funky beat – what’s not to like? The set is built around a focal track – one of my common techniques for planning a mix. It’s track 10 (at 48:03), Aggresivnes – Into Oblivion (Affective Mix). The play count for this track (in my personal library) is ridiculously high.

And here it is – the first set where I dip my toes into an area that I would end up specializing in several years later: booty breaks. At the time I wanted to keep the mood of Voyager rotating so I would end up not revisiting this theme again until much later. (I have no such condition for the re-launched Voyager, so be prepared for a lot of soundtracks to twerk to in 2016 and beyond.)

I was aiming for funk with a good sprinkling of weirdness in this one. I wasn’t sure this would really work for anyone else, but I ended up hearing more than a few positive responses. It’s always nice when it turns out that your guess wasn’t wrong.

The first of many breakbeat sets that trend grinding, dark, and bassy. Good late night sets for the middle, pre-dawn time period of a party where initial exuberance has passed, sobriety is long gone, and it’s time to just get down. Coincidentally this and booty breaks are my partner’s favorite category of sets.

This mix is a personal favorite, invoking the memories of enormous tape decks, cardboard on concrete, and track suits. I wish there were more tracks with this sound at this speed, most b-boy inspired releases sit in the 110 bpm range. You can push a track’s tempo up only so far…

The first episode. Voyager arose out of my urge to mix more and a dissatisfaction with the irregular schedule of the average DJ podcast – not that I was any better after a while. The original process gave me room to obsess over trying for CD release perfection, and that’s way too time-consuming for weekly recordings. Now I live broadcast and that forces me to be okay with how it turns out on the first pass.

My first official breakbeat mix. I don’t have the notes of what I originally said about it but it was probably incredibly pompous; the title refers to how I felt about my adaptation to spinning breakbeat vs the various forms of trance I was previously known for. I fall in and out of having humility sometimes.

My first official mix recording in more than a few years; on a whim I picked up a hardware controller capable of mixing mp3s and was pleased to see how the tech had advanced. Within hours of powering it up I had this recorded and the inspiration for Voyager was born. I still love my Technics but I do NOT miss the weight of lugging a record case.
