  • Robert Estrin: A Teacher Lineage: Martin-Pierre Marsick - From the Piano Expert
https://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/experts/robert/a-teacher-lineage-martin-pierr/ - Having studied with Lambert Massart at the Conservatoire de Paris and Joseph Joachim at the Berlin Hochschule, Martin Pierre Marsick built a reputation as one of the most sought-after violin teachers of his day. Students recalled that he was demanding, inflexible, and maybe even a little arrogant. And at 20 francs a lesson, he was without question one of the most expensive teachers in Paris at the time. Then, in 1892, he was named professor at the Conservatoire de Paris, taking over from Eugène Sauzay, who retired. His time there, however, would be short—just eight years, from 1892 to 1900. Thibaud remembered Marsick as a teacher who noticed when a student was struggling, someone who truly paid attention. He provided a shoulder to lean on, as Thibaud found out firsthand when he walked away from his very first competition empty-handed. Enescu put it simply by saying that he was an excellent teacher with a great reputation, who taught him to play the violin better and to truly know how to interpret certain works. And Flesch? Well, Flesch went even further. He said Marsick taught him how to u
