  • Rickhouse - February 2021

Welcome to the February 2021 Rickhouse.  The home of the ever maturing Today’s Dad definition! The goal of Wake. Dad. Drink. Repeat.  is to “define Today’s Dad”...we do this by asking our guest to share their definition at the top of every show.  We store these definitions week after week on our podcasts, YouTube channel, in our RICKHOUSE on our website, social media platforms and we constantly highlight them. Our Rickhouse is our way of distilling our information into a tasty blend to share.

These episodes will drop the last Friday of every month, adding to the ever maturing and complexity that is a "Today's Dad" ~ Enjoy

  • Another Round with Chris Chafin

This week on the pod we are joined by WDDR Alum, dad to one, husband, host of the 30 Years Later Podcast and journalist who has been recently writing for Vox about parenting, the hilarious - Chris Chafin.

Last time Chris was on the pod with us was June of 2020 for Episode 49. We talked about his article he had recently written for Vox about four different dads and how the pandemic has transformed their notion of fatherhood.

This go around we talked about his most recent article he has written for Vox titled What “baby bust”? New and soon-to-be parents on choosing to have kids in dark times.

We laughed a lot and caught up about how life as a new dad during the pandemic has been going, had a few drinks, and even heard an updated Today’s Dad definition from Chris. A huge thanks to Chris for coming on the pod and sharing his work with us, be sure to read the article and subscribe to his podcast.

  • Chase Novelich - The Father Son Bond, Pokemon, and PowerDot

This week on the pod we are joined by husband, dad, fantasy football league champion, and the Director of Marketing & eCommerce at PowerDot, Chase Novelich. We covered a lot on the pod this week from having kids at a young age to Pokemon, dirt bikes, virtual learning, the bond between father and son, trust and PowerDot.

Chase gave us a great Toady’s Dad Definition that focused on his experience as a “boy dad” and being one of three brothers. He says a Today’s Dad is someone who leads by example and who is emotionally available, and who understands that if you are emotionally available you can build trust which allows you to lead by example.

A big thanks to Chase for joining us on the pod this week! And again a very special thanks to PowerDot for hooking our listeners up with 20% off any purchase on their website with using the code ‘Dad20’ at checkout.

  • Justin Gill - Bachan’s, Bringing Families Together and Hardwork

This week on the pod we are joined by dad to three, husband and founder of Bachan’s (the first and only Japanese BBQ sauce in the US), Justin Gill! We cover a lot on the pod with Justin this week including his journey creating Bachan’s, the importance and impact of family in his life, working for and running a family business, having his first daughter while in college, the ever present struggle of the work / life balance and why Bachan’s mission is to bring families together….and so much more!

Justin dropped a killer Today’s Dad definition that was all about being a role model by showing your kids the value of hardwork and dedication as well as appreciating the limited amount of time we actually get to spend with our kids and being sure to be present and create quality time when you can.

A big thanks to Justin for joining us on the pod, and a special shout out to Eric Glader (WDDR alum and founder of PowerDot) for connecting us! Order some Bachan’s for you and your family today!

  • Thomas Redmon - Zero to Hero with Triplet Boys

This week on the pod we are joined by dad to triplets, husband, childhood friend with Michael and Today’s Dad, Thomas Redmon. We had a great chat with Thomas about being a father to triplets, how his family handled his wife having Covid, racial injustice and some of the challenges of being a black dad in America and much more.

Thomas shared a great Today’s Dad definition that was made up of three parts, being an example, a protector to your significant other, and taking care of your mental health so you can take care of your family. A big thanks to Thomas for joining us on the pod this week!

  • Paul Humes - Discerning and Standing in a Beer Store

This week on the pod we are joined by Paul Humes. Paul is a dad to one, husband, the founder of Wild Nature Play and the Program Director for Thorne Nature Experience.

Paul started us out with a great Today’s Dad definition that compared being a Today’s Dad with starting at a beer wall and having to discern what you want to drink. There are so many options or ways of doing things that it isn’t always an easy choice.

We had a great chat with Paul about why he created Wild Nature Play, his hopes for it, how his travels around the world helped to shape him as a parent, and his thoughts on Covid’s impact on our kids and educators (he has an Elementary Ed. degree, which made him a great Today’s Dad to have this convo with). A big thanks to Paul for joining us on the pod this week! Happy 2021 everyone!
