‘For the 87 year old justice to die barely six weeks before the election is an American tragedy for liberals and a historic opportunity for conservatives.’

‘Donald Trump’s Republicans and Joe Biden’s Democrats are instantly at war over whether Ginsburg should be replaced before the election.’

‘There are two key questions here. The first is whether a conservative replacement for Ginsburg will happen before the election. The second is what impact her death will have on the election campaign.’

Michael is joined by Bruce Robertson, energy finance analyst from the Institute for Energy Economics & Financial Analysis, regarding the government's aim to create a more competitive and transparent Australian Gas Hub by unlocking gas supply, delivering an efficient pipeline and transportation market, and empowering gas customers.

 

Mr Robertson writes, ‘With their announcement this week of subsidies for a major new gas plant in the Hunter Valley, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Energy Minister Angus Taylor have made it clear: whatever the roadmap, there's only one destination – gas.’

 

‘It is dressed up as a measure for job creation, cheaper gas for consumers and energy security. But instead of gearing the country towards investment in industries that will shape our long-term future and create jobs to get Australians back to work, throwing public money at gas will benefit only one sector – the gas industry.’

Michael is joined by John Alexander, Liberal member for Bennelong, says there is some merit in a proposal put forward by the Refugee Council of Australia to offer the 17,000 people in Australia on two classes of refugee visas an easier path to residency in exchange for helping out.

 

Mr Alexander, who is part of a parliamentary committee to find solutions to the produce picker shortage, says it "seems like a reasonable idea".

 

"We should be seeking willing participants in agriculture wherever we can".

 

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen tens of thousands of backpackers locked out of Australia leaving fruit & vegetables at risk of rotting in the fields.
