The COP is arguably the most important meeting of civil society, the private sector and governments around the issue of Climate Change that pierces through our lives from bus rides to plane rides, the market and the water in our pipes but what really happens at the COP?
Sumeet Betancourt is a Monitoring, Reporting and Verification Officer with the Forestry Department in Belize currently on a young professionals fellowship with the UNFCCC Fellowship in Bonn, Germany. He has been to two UNFCCC COPs as a junior negotiator and while he considers himself a rookie until #3, he does a thorough job of helping us demystify this big meeting of minds that for us in the Caribbean is a ticking clock.

We spoke to Senator Janelle Chanona, Vice President of OCEANA in Belize. She’s the representative for the Belize Network of NGOs comprised mostly of environmental organizations that were pivotal to Belize’s ratification of Escazu.

Welcome to episode 3, where I talk a bit about the amnesty program that the Government of Belize is going to launch in April 2022. It’s a pretty hot button topic but it’s not new, in fact, it is Belize’s 3rd Amnesty Program granting permanent residency like in 1999 and/or citizenship like in 1984. I wanted to discuss the potential economic benefits since in this world development policy usually is guided by economic benefits. Let’s engage!
