  • The Power at Work Within Us

The Power at Work Within Us

Ephesians 3:19-21 “Now to him, who by the power at work within us, is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Did you know there was a power at work within us?  Did you know with that power we can accomplish abundantly far more than we could ever ask or imagine?  Have you ever had to do something that was really hard and you weren’t quite sure how you would get it done, and yet, you somehow were able to do it?  That is the power that is working within you. The Holy Spirit lives in each one of us and is ready and willing to take action anytime we need him too.  This is truly amazing to me.  It is amazing to me that God sent His only son down to earth to die on a cross for our sins and then when Jesus went back up to sit at the right hand of His Father, God sent us an advocate to guide us on our way.

This verse says the power within us is able to accomplish far more than we would be able to ask or imagine.  So, if we don’t know to ask or imagine it, how does the Holy Spirit know what we need help with?  They Holy Spirit has a direct link to your heart.  The Holy Spirit knows what we want better than we do.  When we think about what we want, we can get all caught up in our head wondering if we can do it, wondering if we should do it, wondering if it is ok to want this or that.  The Holy Spirit looks deep into our heart and knows what we want, probably even before we do.  Or maybe it isn’t that the Holy Spirit knows before we do, maybe it is just that the Holy Spirit can admit what we want sooner than we are ready too.  For instance, if we want to have a baby.  Maybe we aren’t quite ready to admit that we want a baby because having a baby can be scary and we might not feel ready for it.  Also, we might have this sense that we want to find a new job.  However, we don’t pray for it yet, because getting a new job can be scary too.  Even though our conscious self is not quite ready to pray for these things because they are scary, the Holy Spirit is aware that we want then and can start to pray for us.

The Holy Spirit can also help us do things that are very difficult.  Can you think back to a time when you had to get through something and you remember thinking to yourself that there was no way you could do it?  I have had plenty of these experiences.  I have had plenty of times when I have gone through something and I was sure I wasn’t going to make it through.  For instance, one time when Tony went to Germany to do his reserve time.  He went for 6 weeks to Germany every year for a few years and it was up to me to hold the fort down until he returned.  During this particular time in Germany I was having a lot of trouble with the boys at home.  One of them had gotten expelled from school,  and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do while he was home with me.  There wasn’t any talk about when the district would find him a new school.  It was a difficult time but I made it through because of the strength of the Holy Spirit.

The verse also says, “to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”  The power at work within us should get all the glory.  Sometimes we like to take credit for all that is going right in our lives, and we blame others for all that is going wrong.  Do you see anything wrong with this?  Do you see how this doesn’t give glory where glory belongs?  The Holy Spirit was given to us by God and the Holy Spirit is  the one that is living inside of us and giving us the strength to do all things.  When we take credit for the things that we couldn’t have done without the Holy Spirit, it is as if we don’t appreciate what He does for us.  Have you ever been working with someone in school or at work and they take all the credit for the whole project?  How did that make you feel?  Did you want to work with them again?  I wonder if the Holy Spirit feels like that when we take all the credit?

How can we give the glory to the Holy Spirit or to God?  We praise them and we have gratitude for them.  Also, we let others know what they have done for us.  When people comment on how strong your were through it all, you can say something like, “Thanks to the Holy Spirit,” or you can say, “all the glory goes to God.”  Whatever it is you want to say is good, just as long as you are giving the glory to God.  He does so much for us and I bet He is thanked very often for his generosity. How many times have we forgotten to stop and thank the Lord for all He has done?  Let’s try to develop a practice of gratitude and try to remember to give God the glory, He deserves it.

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, we love you and we are sorry for all the times when we did not give you the glory.  We are sorry for all the times we took the credit for the work of the Holy Spirit.  He is amazing and we didn’t mean to take away the glory for ourselves.  Lord, we are so grateful you sent your advocate to us to guide us and to give us power.  You are amazing.  You are the Lord of the Lords and we are so grateful to have you in our lives.  We love you Lord and we ask all of this in accordance with our wills and in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thank you for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  Tomorrow’s guest witness will be Beth.  I look forwarded to sharing her story with you.  Have a blessed day!

  • The Unforgivable Sin

    The Unforgivable Sin

Mark 3:28-29 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter,  but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”

I remember the first time I really heard this verse, or at least heard and paused to ponder what it meant.  My dad and I were talking and I am don’t remember how we got on the topic of this verse, but we did.  I remember hearing the last part of this verse and really worrying.  It says, “But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.”  That seems pretty severe.  I instantly starting thinking back over my life trying to figure out if I had ever blasphemed against the Holy Spirit.  My understanding of blasphemy was that you speak ill or sacrilegiously about God, or in this case the Holy Spirit.  I was sure I never consciously blasphemed agains the Holy Spirit, but what if I did it on accident?  When we start using words like “guilty of eternal sin,” I worry because I really want to spend eternity with my Jesus in heaven.

I also started to worry about my boys as when they were younger they would say unkind things about God just to try to push my buttons.  I remember when one of my boys was younger, he was looking through a flyer for a video rental place.  He was 5 and wanted me to read all the names of the movies to him.  One of them was the movie Jackass.  I didn’t want to tell him that one because it was not a great word for a 5 year old to know.  However, he promised he would never use it and I gave in and told him the name.  Actually there was another movie on the same page called Drag Me To Hell.  My son did a good job not using those words for a little while.  After that, anytime he got upset he would start to use that word.  He would say things like, you a jackass, dad’s a jackass and so on.  He used it so often that I was glad I lived in Germany and most people didn’t know what he was saying.  One time we had gone to see a castle and he started to act up.  I was taking him back to the car to sit and calm down and he didn’t want to go so he started calling everyone a jackass.  Mom’s a jackass, dad’s a jackass, grandma Joanie’s a jackass, and I was ignoring the behavior as he just wanted to get me upset.  The next thing I know he yells out “God’s a jackass, drag me to hell.”  I would never know what was going to come out of my kids  mouth.

I am sure you can imagine how nervous I would be that they would commit this eternal sin.  That my son would call the Holy Sprit a jackass or something and then never be forgiven.  I did spend a lot of time thinking about this verse upon first hearing it.  I am not sure what got me to stop spending so much time worrying about it but eventually I did.  However, whenever I heard it again I would wonder what exactly it meant to blaspheme the Holy Spirit and if I, or anyone in my family had done it, since I really want to spend eternity with them in heaven.

I didn’t really understand this verse until I heard Father Mike talk about on the Bible in a Year Podcast.  I really liked how he explained it and also it really set my heart at ease and so when I heard it again this year I decided I wanted to share it will all of you in case you are not listening to the Bible in a Year podcast and you have always wondered what this verse meant.  Also, even if you were not worried about what this verse meant it is good to have this information moving forward in your faith journey.

Father Mike explained that the “unforgivable sin” any sin that we refuse to surrender to the Lord for His mercy.  The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, “There are no limits to the mercy of God but anyone that deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins, and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit, and such hardness of hearts can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.  So any sin can be a sin against the Holy Spirit but there is not just one sin.  It reminds us that we need to bring everything to the foot of the cross and to ask for forgiveness and then to accept forgiveness.  Hearing this really set my mind at ease.  Having Father Mike give me the reassurance that there is nothing I can do that God is not willing to forgive was great.

As much as I found this explanation reassuring I understand that some of you listening may not find it reassuring.  I know there are a lot of people that struggle to believe that God will forgive their sins.  Life is hard and we have all done things we are not proud of.  We don’t always make the right choices.  In fact, sometimes we make truly terrible choices.  We hurt people intentionally and unintentionally.  We may have even killed someone, maybe accidentally when we were driving or when we were on a substance like alcohol.  Whatever it is we have done in the past, God is ready and willing to forgive.  All we need to  do is say sorry and ask for forgiveness.  God knows what we have done and He still loves us and wants to forgive us.  Accept that forgiveness.

If you are struggling with accepting that God can forgive you then just start there.  Tell God how you are feeling and ask Him to help you open your heart and mind to HIs forgiveness.  You don’t have to do this on your own.  God wants this for you more than you want it for you.  All you need is a willingness to accept God’s forgiveness and He will do the rest.  God knows where you are at.  He knows what you have been through, what you have done and why you think you can’t be forgiven.  He doesn’t expect you to do it all on your own.  All God wants is for you to ask Him for help right where you are at.  He will do the rest.  He is so amazing like that.  He does all the heavy lifting when we can’t.  God loves us more than we could ever know.  He wants us to be with Him in heaven for all eternity.  Accept His forgiveness!  He gives it freely.

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, help open our hearts and minds to the fact you are willing to forgive our sins.  Help us accept this.  Help this fact bring us comfort instead of worry.  If we are struggling to accept your forgiveness, help us Lord.  We are so grateful that you forgive our sins, as we certainly don’t deserve your forgiveness or you love.  We love you Lord.  You are the king of kings and we are grateful we can call you our dad.  We ask all of this in accordance with your word and in Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

Thank you for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  I look forward to spending time with you tomorrow.  Have a blessed day!

  • Seek The Lord and His Strength

Seek the Lord and His Strength

Psalm 105:4 “Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually.”

I thought this was a great verse because I know a lot of people that could really use some strength right now.  When we are going through a difficult time we can often turn to things other than the Lord for strength.  We might start having a drink when we get home from work, or after a busy day with the kids.  We figure that will give us just enough strength to get through the night until the kids go to bed, or it will relax us enough to forget about work.  However, often times one drink turns into two or three and then creates another problem.  Sometimes we turn to our friends and family to get the strength that we need.  However, they can only provide so much strength as they are human and on their own they have a finite amount of strength.  We also might try and rely on our own strength to get us through.  This is not enough.  We need to seek the Lord’s strength.

How can we seek the Lord’s strength?  First and foremost, we can ask for it.  That may sound so simple, and it is, and yet so many of us forget to start there.  We look everywhere else first.  We get upset with the Lord for not giving us the strength we need and yet we never asked for it in the first place.  God wants to help us.  He is ready and willing.  All He asks from us is for us to ask Him.  Yes He knows you need help, and also He is a willing to let you try to fix it yourself if that is what you want to do.  Have you ever done this with your children, co-workers, or siblings?  You can see them struggling and you know they need help, but you don’t help them until they ask?  You give them the chance to figure it out on their own.  God does not do this to punish us, or because He doesn’t care.  Quite the opposite, He does it because He does care.  He cares about what we want and need.  He cares about our growth and we grow when we do things that are difficult.  However, He will step in as soon as we ask Him too.

Another way we can seek his strength is to seek the tools that He gave to us.  We can dig into His word and find strength in the scriptures.  We can also seek the various prayers He has given to us.  There are so many prayers out there.  You can say your own prayers, or you can find ones for your specific need.  Sometimes we don’t know what to pray, especially if we are really upset.  Finding a prayer that someone else wrote and praying it can take a lot of the pressure off.  If you are struggling and you can’t find the words to say you can also just sit with the Lord. He doesn’t need us to say the right thing, He just wants us to seek Him.  It says in Matthew 6:7 “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words.”  Our prayers don’t have to be long and drawn out, they don’t have to be perfect and eloquent, they don’t have to be exact.  What God wants is for us to speak from the heart.

Another way we can seek the Lord is to attend Mass or a church service.  Being part of a community is great because when you surround yourself with others that believe the same way you believe you feel more free to be yourself.  You don’t have to worry that people will mock you or persecute you for your beliefs.  You feel safe.  Also, Mass is great because you get to worship God and participate in a sacrament.  Mass is the ultimate way to seek God because you actually receive Jesus, through communion, into your body.  At church services you get to hear the word of God and then the pastor gives a sermon on that word to make it more personal to each and every one of us.  These sermons help us to take the word of God and apply it to our lives.  The sermons help us understand the Word of God more.

Often times at mass there is also praise and worship music and that is another way to seek the Lord.  I love to listen to praise and worship music.  If I think back to the one thing I have done consistently since I discovered praise music in 2011 it would be to listen to it often.  I didn’t know Christian music was a thing.  Well, I knew we sang songs at church but I didn’t know that they had Christian music across all genres.  I didn’t know you could listen to Christian music when you weren’t at church.  Maybe this sounds silly, but I just didn’t know.  When I first started I bought some CD’s from Anne Trufant a Christian singer that was at a conference I went to.  I started to listen to her songs in my car and while I cleaned my house.  I started to learn the words to the songs and then I would hear the song lyrics during the readings at church.  Her songs had a lot of scripture in them and I didn’t even realize it.  Now I have discovered an app called Spotify and it has all the music you could ever want on it and it is free if you don’t mind ads.  However, if I was listening to the radio I would have ads anyway.  On this app you can search for any type of music you like.  It will also start to make mixes for you once the app sees what music you tend to listen to.  I listen to a certain playlist call Big Life Mornings by Pamela Crim.  She has chosen a bunch of really upbeat Christian music and I just love it.

Another way to seek God, which I briefly mentioned is to just sit with the Lord.  At Catholic churches you can go to something called Eucharistic Adoration.  This is the worship of the Eucharist outside of the Mass. The Eucharistic Host is displayed in a monstrance on the altar so that all can see and pray in the presence of Christ.  The Eucharist contains the body and blood of Christ and so when you are in Eucharistic Adoration you are in the true presence of Christ.  Do you have to go to Adoration to spend time with God?  Absolutely not.  God is everywhere, He is all around us and even inside of us in the form of the Holy Spirit.  If you want to spend time with the Lord you can do this anywhere.  According to Jesus, its good to go away from the crowd to pray.  In Matthew 6:6 it says, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”  The Bible also mentions several times how Jesus went off to the Mts. or somewhere else to be by himself to pray.  Whatever works for you is great.  Just spend time with the Lord.  When I sit with the Lord, I will often write in my journal as if I am writing a letter to my Father in heaven as it is difficult for me to just sit in silence with Him.  Again whatever works for you is perfect.  There are no rules to spending time with our heavenly Father, whatever feels right to you.

I have mentioned five ways that we can seek the Lord.  First, ask the Lord for His strength.  Second, seek the tools He has given to us.  Third, attend Mass or a church service.  Fourth, listen to praise and worship music.  Fifth, spend time with the Lord, just the two of you  There are many other ways that you can seek strength from the Lord.  Try these ways and see which ones you like best.  One of the many things about God is that He knows we are all unique and what works for one of us may not work for another.  I promise if you turn to God and seek your strength from Him instead of from the world, He will give you more strength than you need.  I have seen people get through incredibly difficult, impossible situations because they relied on God instead of themselves or the world.  Lean in, God is waiting.

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord help us turn to you for strength.  Help us to see that the world can’t help us like you can.  Help us to make good choices when searching for strength and not fall into bad habits that we will have to fix later.  Lord, if anyone is turning to bad habits for their strength right now, I ask that you send the Holy Spirit to convict them of it and help them turn back to you.  Lord you are the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings.  You are the resurrection and the life.  We are so grateful for all that you do.  We love you Lord and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  I look forward to spending time with you on Monday.  Have a blessed weekend!

  • His Glory

    His Glory

Isaiah 60:2 “For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you.”

I thought this was a good verse for today because it seems like the earth is currently covered in darkness and there is even a thick darkness around people.  This darkness can vary.  For some the darkness could be sickness.  We all know our fair share of people that have been really sick over these last two years.  However, in general I think we tend to know more and more people getting sick.  I have never known so many people that either have cancer or have a loved one suffering from it.  And although I am thankful that the success rate for curing it is so much higher than it used to be, there are still far to many people suffering from it.  I know people who are in chronic pain every day and have been for a very long time.  I am sure it seems to them like they are covered in a thick darkness and they probably feel as though there is not end to that darkness.

To others the darkness might be pure evil.  For instance, the shootings in Texas, in Buffalo and all the others shootings that have been occurring over this year.  Did you know that there have been 240 mass shootings in 2022 alone?  A mass shooting is any occurrence where 4 or more people, not including the shooter, is injured or killed.  We have not have a single week pass by this year where there have been less than 4 mass shootings.  I am not telling you this to start a political debate about gun violence or legislation.  I am telling you this to show you that darkness is covering the earth and darkness is covering the people.  Whether that darkness is causing you to be evil or whether that evil is causing you pain and suffering.  The whole world is suffering right now.  We are suffering because of all the violence in the world, we are suffering because of all the disease in the world and we are suffering because of sin in the world.

I was talking with a friend the other day and she meditates a lot and is usually very upbeat.  She was really down.  She said her heart and soul feel so heavy over all the violence in this country.  She said she just can’t understand the people that commit the violence.  She can’t understand how it could happen so often.  She said she usually isn’t affected like this but she really is not sure how to shake this feeling.  She is trying to figure out the purpose of it all.  Unfortunately I don’t think there is a purpose to everything.  Sin is corrupting this world and this is not what God wants for us.  This is what he was trying to protect us from.  If everyone in the world was abiding by even just the main two commandments, Love God and love one another, we would’t have any of this violence.  However, the violence and heartbreak is all around us and we need to decide what to do about it.

We can choose to get lost in this darkness.  We can sit and think about all that is wrong with the world and all try to understand it.  We can spend countless hours watching the news and reading articles about all that is wrong with the world today.  We have that choice.  However, where will that get us?  Will this help us feel any better?  Will this help cure our sadness or our lack of understanding.  I don’t think so.  I think we will be more confused and we will also be a lot more anxious.  I had a friend that was really struggling with anxiety.  She was worried about the future of this country, she was worried about the possibility of another world war, or a civil war.  Her anxiety was getting so bad that it was a struggle to get out of bed in the morning.  When we talked I asked her to stop watching the news for 2 weeks.  After one day she said she felt so much better.  It is so simple and yet we feel we need to watch the news, we need to be informed.  I don’t disagree with the need to be informed, I question how much you need to watch or read in order to be sufficiently informed.

The second half of this verse says, “but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you.”  The thing I think a lot of us are forgetting is just how big our God is.  Yes, we may be outnumbered.  There are far more non-Christians than there are Christians, but when has that ever stopped us before?  Look at the beginning of our religion.  There were the 12 apostles and then in one day the baptized 3,000.  This verse is a reminder to us that the Lord will rise upon us.  We don’t have to figure this world out on our own.  We don’t have to figure it out at all.  That’s God’s job, we just need to keep turning back to Him, and looking to Him for the answers instead of looking to the World for the answers.  God is always with us, we are never alone.  The word “arise” is a verb that means to emerge or become apparent.  This verse doesn’t mean that when the world is in darkness the Lord will finally come.  He never left us.  This verse is just saying that when we are in darkness the Lord becomes more apparent, or He emerges.  This is because when we are in darkness we look for Him. When things are going great, we tend not to look for God.  We are enjoying life, we are happy and we might be grateful, but don’t actively seek Him in the same way that we do when we are in darkness.

The last thing the verse says is that “his glory will appear over you.”  I read that and I didn’t think it said anything amazing.  I thought it was a nice sentiment but I didn’t grasp the full weight of that phrase until I looked up what “glory” means.  According to the internet, the Bible definition of glory is “ is to describe the splendor, holiness and majesty of God. Glory, in this sense, is often associated with a person experiencing God's presence in a tangible way.” Can you imagine the splendor, holiness and majesty of God appearing over you?  How awesome would it be to experience God’s presence in a tangible way?  I believe you don’t have to be in darkness to feel God’s presence in a tangible way and also I can see how it would be more likely because that is when we are most vulnerable.  We let down our guards when we are in a thick darkness because it is abundantly clear to us that we can’t do it on our own.  We tried, we gave it all we had, and we can’t get out of the darkness without Him.  I think this scripture verse is an awesome verse to remember when you are struggling and going through a hard time.  God is acknowledging that yes, the world is in darkness, and yes, we are too, however, He is there.  His glory is upon us.  If you are in darkness start looking out for God’s Glory.  It will appear over you.

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, we ask that you help us through this darkness.  Help us to turn away from the darkness and look for the light.  Help us to not focus on the darkness but to keep our eyes fixed on you Lord.  Lord, we ask that you give us the strength we need to wait for your glory.  We ask that you open our eyes to be able to see your Glory when it comes.  You are so amazing Lord and we are truly grateful for all you do for us.  We love you and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

  • Your Own Prayer Language

    Your Own Prayer Language

Acts 2:1-4 "When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.”

I thought I would talk about this scripture today since we just celebrated Pentecost yesterday yesterday at mass.  At least we did in the Catholic Church.  I am not sure if that is a date that is universally celebrated or not.  In case you are not sure what I am talking about, Pentecost is the day when the Holy Spirit came upon to the Apostles.  After Jesus was crucified and then rose from the dead, he walked the Earth for 40 days.  After this time Jesus told the apostles that He was going to see His Father in Heaven in John 14:16 Jesus says, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.”  I am guessing the apostles didn’t know exactly what this meant.  I doubt they could have ever imagined what happened on Pentecost.

After Jesus ascended into heaven all the apostles were gathered together in the upper room and this is where Acts 2:1-4 picks up.  They were all sitting around, probably sad because Jesus left again, or maybe they were praising God because Jesus came back at all.  It doesn’t say exactly what they were doing.  However it does say that they heard a noise like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house they were sitting in.  Then all of the sudden as they looked around the room they saw tongues of fire above everyone’s head.  Well, the verse says, resting on them, but it is always pictured with these tongues of fire right above their heads.  Can you imagine how strange that must have been for them?  Even though I am sure they got used to seeing strange things when they were with Jesus, I bet even they were shocked by this event.  Next it says they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.  Man, I wish the Holy Spirit would have filled me with the ability to speak French when I was in High School.  Imagine being able to skip 4 years of learning a language in High School and just have the Holy Spirit give you the ability?  That would have made for an easier High School experience.

In all seriousness, because of this special ability given to the apostles that day, they were able to go out and speak to all the people that were in town.  In Acts 2:7-11 it explains just how great a gift this was.  “Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,  Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.”  The town was filled with visitors that spoke all different languages.  Had the apostles not been given this gift, they wouldn’t have been able to get the word out to everyone that day.  Because they were all able to understand them, the apostles were able to baptize 3,000 people in that one day.

When we read the book of Acts, and most of the Bible actually, we tend to think the things we read about are not happening today.  For instance, we believe that Jesus healed people back in His day, and they even believe that the apostles had the power to heal people in Jesus’ name.  However, we feel that power died with the apostles and it is not something that is still going on today.  We don’t see the healings that are still going on today because we are not looking for them.  I guarantee if you look for miracles today you will see them.  Actually, my friend who is giving her witness tomorrow has received several miracles.  Most of the people giving their witnesses have seen miracles.  They have not seen miracles because God loves them more than he loves us.  They haven’t seen miracles because they are more favored than we are.  They received miracles because they were open to it.  They asked for them and then they were on the lookout for them.  They may not even realized at the time that they are miracles.  They just knew that they needed something and God provided it.  However, looking back, they can see that it was miraculous.  I am sure that God is providing big and small miracles in your life too.  If you can’t see them it is because you are not looking for them.  Take some time today and think about any prayers that you prayed and then they were answered.  Take some time and let God know that you are willing and will happily accept and be grateful for any miracles He wants to send your way.  Ask Him to show you the miracles He has already given to you so that you can thank Him.

It is not just miracles that are still happening today.  The Holy Spirit is also still giving people the gift of speaking in another language.  I wanted to take a minute or two to talk about the gift of tongues because I think it is something that most people don’t understand.  I know I didn’t understand until several years ago.  I always thought it was really weird and if I am being honest, a little scary.  What is the gift of tongues?  The gift of tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit.   It is often one of the first gifts given and it is the only one that is just for you personally.  Most of the gifts, such as healing and words of prophecy are given so that we can build up the body of Christ, so we can build up the church.  However, the gift of tongues is just for you and to help strengthen your faith and your prayer life.    The gift of tongues is your own personal prayer language.  Most of the time, in my experience, it is not an actual language that others would understand.  I know in this verse the apostles spoke all different languages so that those around them could understand and that is what was needed at the time for them.  All the people that I know that speak in tongues it is not any recognizable language.  That can happen, but I wouldn’t expect it to happen as it is not the norm.

If you want to speak in tongues all you have to do is ask the Holy Spirit for the gift.  Ask with a true and sincere desire for it.  You could also go through a life in the Spirit seminar or you could ask your church pastor if anyone in your church would be able to pray over you for a Baptism in the Holy Spirit.  Once you ask for the baptism in the Holy Spirit, or you ask for the gift of tongues, you have to wait with expectance.  God answers our prayers.  If you want your own personal prayer language, and you ask God for it, then you should expect that He will deliver.  As you wait, you practice putting random sounds together.  I heard Patty Mansfield explain once, think of it as if you were talking with baby Jesus.  You wouldn’t use words, you would say things like goo goo and ga ga because that is how we talk to babies.

You can practice this when you are in the car or in the shower, or where ever you want to practice.  God is willing to give all that ask for the gift of tongues the gift.  However, many that want it do not receive it because they are not willing to give up control of their vocal chords, they are not willing to look or feel silly practicing these random sounds.  If you put in the time and you believe that God will answer your prayer, then you will develop your own prayer language.  One thing I want to caution you on because I didn’t understand it at the time is that you will not know what you are praying for when you are praying in tongues.  I thought I would be making these sounds but I would be thinking of what I was praying for.  This is not the case.  You will be making sounds and it just feels like you are making sounds.  However, you will know when it is just you making sounds and when the Holy Spirit takes over and you are speaking in tongues.  If you have faith that it will happen, it will happen.

In Romans 8:26 it says, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.”  When you are praying in tongues, what is happening is that the Holy Spirit is communicating directly with the Lord from the depths of your heart.  The Holy Spirit is saying what you truly want to say in the way that God can hear it best.  Also, another benefit is that no-one else knows what you are saying, even the devil.  Satan can not understand our prayers when we pray in tongues.  It is a private conversation between the Holy Spirit and God on your behalf.  Have you ever had a time when you really needed prayer and yet you didn’t even know what to pray for?  This is an excellent example of when praying in tongues comes in handy.  You don’t know what you need, but the Holy Spirit does and He sends those prayers to God for you.  Miraculous things happen when you turn over that control and let the Holy Spirit say your prayers for you!

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to pray for all those listening to this episode this morning.  Lord, help us to understand the gift of praying in tongues a little better.  Help us to open our hearts and minds to the idea.  If anyone is wanting this gift Lord, we ask that you give it to them.  That you give them the trust they need to ask for it.  Lord, we ask you to open our eyes to the miracles you are already performing in our lives.  We are so grateful for each and every one of them.  You are amazing and we can’t thank you enough for all you do.  We praise you Lord and we love you.  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  Tomorrow’s guest is my friend Jasmin.  Jasmin has had a long journey.  She was a single mom while trying to work and go to school.  She has hit many bumps in the road and yet when she was looking back she could see God was with her through it all.  She has seen some incredible miracles and I think the timing of this witness is perfect after today’s devotional.  Isn’t God funny like that?  We recorded this witness about a month ago and it just happens to be the day after a devotional on recognizing the miracles in our lives.  That was definitely planned by the Holy Spirit.  I love that.  I know you are going to love hearing the witness tomorrow and I look forward to sharing it with you.  Have a blessed day!

  • Joy Comes With The Morning

    Joy Comes With The Morning

Psalm 30:5 “For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night,  but joy comes with the morning.”

There is a song I listen to, but of course now that I want to know what song it is, I can’t think of it.  The chorus of this song sings “joy come with the morning.”  I love this idea and so when I heard this verse the other day I knew that was what I wanted to talk about today.  The first line of the verse is also an important thing to remember.  God does get mad at us.  He has over seven billion children, of course He gets angry sometimes.  I think if I were parent over everyone on Earth, I would be mad most of the time because this world is going crazy.  There is so much going on today that is not of God and that is heartbreaking to me.  I can only imagine what it feels like to God.  According to the internet there are 2.3 billion Christians in the world.  This means that 70% of His children have turned away, rejected Him, or are worshiping false Gods.  That has got to be hard to watch.

However, this verse gives us hope because it says His anger is but for a moment and His favor is for a lifetime.  If you find favor in the Lord, that will last your whole lifetime.  God loves each and everyone of us.  It is not Him that turns away from us, it is us that walks away from Him.  Or maybe we don’t walk away, but we don’t follow His commandments either.  We all have God’s favor from the beginning.  If we lose His favor it is because of our actions and not because of anything God does.  God has told us throughout the Bible, whether it be with His words directly, or though the stories of others in the Bible, that if we want to be back in His favor, all we need to do is repent.  He is so forgiving and loving.  He is there waiting for us with open arms to turn back to Him and run into His loving arms.

It is never too late to repent and to turn back.  We tend to think whatever we did was too bad for God to forgive, or maybe we think we have been away for so long that we can’t possibly go back to church now.  You can go back, it is not too late.  It says in Luke 15:7, “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”  It is great if we can all follow God’s commandments, never go astray and just worship God.  However, He is saying right in this verse that He rejoices more over those of us that mess up, we repent and we turn back.  Maybe you did some truly awful things and you are sure God won’t forgive you.  Maybe you don’t feel that what you did was awful, but it did go on for too long and now you can’t come back.  If you are struggling in anyway with thinking God won’t forgive you, I want you to write down the Luke 15:7 verse and look at it often.  God rejoices when we turn away and then turn back.

The last line says, “Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning.”  I love this because it show that we won’t be sad forever, joy will come again.  I have a friend right now that may be losing her brother.  He had a stroke and was making progress and then went into congestive heart failure and the doctors are not giving the family much hope.  Luckily my friend is a very devout Catholic and she knows and believes that there is always Hope in the Lord.  She knows that it is not over until its over, and then sometimes its not even over.  For instance Jesus brought Lazarus back from the dead after 4 days and a little girl back shortly after she died.  However, we don’t see this a lot in today’s day and age.  We do see miracles though and God may choose to give my friend a miracle.  However, He may not and that is so hard.

Having a loved one that is sick is so difficult.  There are so many emotions that you cycle through.  This is normal.  It is ok to be sad, mad, even happy.  That may sound weird, but if your loved one has been suffering for a long time and then they pass away you may be happy they are finally out of pain.  Whatever, you are feeling, allow yourself to feel it without judgement.  Our feelings are one way that our body communicates with us and also a way to warn us of danger.  I have heard anger can be a very useful emotion because it can give you the courage to stand up for yourself.  However, too much anger, expressed badly is not helpful.  Also, I think it is important to mention because I don’t think everyone is aware, you can have two competing emotions at the same time.  It is ok if you feel sad that you are losing a loved one and also happy at the same time that they will be out of pain.  You can be happy if you are having a baby and yet nervous at the same time.  Our human brains are capable of handling more than one emotion at a time.  I mention this because we are hard on ourselves and we judge ourselves often.  If possible, try to accept your emotions as they come.  Let them wash over you and acknowledge them.  Sit with them and allow yourself to feel them, don’t shut them down.  If you allow them to come you will feel better sooner.

If you are in a really hard place right now, whether it is a loved one that is sick, hard times financially, unemployed, tired from chasing small children, or anything else that has you worried or sad, I want you to write this verse on a sticky note and put it up somewhere you will see it often.  “Weeping may linger for the night,  but joy comes with the morning.” I know it feels like you will be sad forever, struggling financially forever, missing your prodigal children forever, or whatever your version of struggle is, but joy will come with the morning.  This darkness will end with the same certainty that the night always ends and gives way to the morning.  The darkness always comes into our lives, but God doesn’t let it stay forever.  Just like He doesn’t let night stay forever, The sun rises every morning and so will the light come back into your life.

One thing to remember that God mentions a lot in the Bible is that if you want to help bring that light in sooner, praise God while you are in the dark.  Praise Him for everything you can be grateful for.  Praise Him for the little wins, and you will see more.  Look for God’s work in your darkness and you will begin to see pockets of light.  You will get through this, I promise you will!  I know it may not seem like it and that is ok.  Even if you can’t imagine ever feeling better, just keep taking one step and then other and you will be walking in the light again one day soon.  For all of you that are listening and are struggling I just want you to know that you are loved and that you are seen!  God sees you and He is right there with you.  Lean into Him and He will guide you through this tough time.  Joy will come with the morning, that is a promise from God.

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, you are amazing and we are grateful you always bring joy with the morning.  Lord, I know so many that are struggling with one thing or another right now.  We ask you to fill them with your peace and help them trust all with be OK.  We ask that you fill them with love and let them know you are there.  We ask that you fill them with discernment as to what they should do in their particular circumstances.  Lord, we ask that you help us to always remember that your anger is but for a moment; and your favor is for a lifetime. That weeping may linger for the night,  but joy comes with the morning.  Help us to believe this with our whole heart, Lord.  Help us to know that we can always repent and turn back to you and you will not only forgive us but rejoice because of our turning back.  We love you Lord and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus holy name, Amen.

Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  I look forward to spending time with you again tomorrow.  Have a blessed day!

  • Spend Time In The Silence

    Spend Time In the Silence

Mark 6:31 “The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.”

This verse comes after the time when Jesus started to send the apostles out two by two to do His works.  When they came back they felt exhausted and they told Him all they were doing.  I am sure they were excited to  share with Jesus all the good things they had been doing.  I know I would have been.  However, even though they were out doing good things, they were still tired.  It says many were coming and going and they had no leisure even to eat.  Have you ever been that busy, so busy you forgot to eat?  I am betting we have all been there at one point or another,  and although not eating ins’t good for you, it isn’t bad to be busy at times.  We will all go through seasons in our lives when we are busier than we want to be.  The key is to balance those times with times where you aren’t crazy busy.

An example of this is when you have a baby, or young children.  Chances are, you are not getting a lot of sleep and maybe missing some meals when you have a baby and when your children are young.  You can’t help being busy in this phase of your life.  Babies are tiny and totally reliant on you, so you have lots of sleepless nights.  However, there are things you can do to make this a little easier on yourself.  For instance, you can sleep when the baby sleeps.  So, instead of trying to get as much done as you can when they nap, you could nap as well.  Also, you could not volunteer to do a bunch of different things when your baby or children are little so that you don’t feel overwhelmed with things to do.  These are just a few things you can do to make it a little less crazy when your kids are little.  As your children start sleeping through the night, or go off to school, your schedule begins to change, and you hopefully get more sleep and have time to slow down and eat.

Sometimes life can give you situations when you need to be busy and sometimes we can create situations where we need to be busy.  For instance, we sign up to help out with everything volunteer opportunity that comes our way.  Or, maybe we take a job that requires us to work 60 or even 80 hours a week.  Whatever the reason, sometimes we are really busy.  As I said earlier, it is not bad to be busy, as long as there are times when you are not super busy.  This could look different for everyone but there needs to be a time when you are not so busy and you have time to rest.

Jesus knew the importance of rest when it came to His disciples.  I am not sure He always knew it when it came to Himself, but He knew the disciples would need to rest.  This is why in the verse above Jesus told them to “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.”  Jesus is calling us to this same thing.  When is the last time you had time to rest?  Are you filling your days with things that keep you busy?  If so, have you examined why you are doing this?  Sometimes we stay busy because we don’t want to think about anything.  Maybe you are going through a really difficult time right now, or maybe a loved one is.  If this is the case, sometimes when we slow down our mind fills with worry or sadness.  However, as long as we are moving and not thinking, we feel as if we are doing ok.  We think if we just don’t let ourselves think about it all will be ok.  I get this thinking.  I have definitely been there before.  However, this thinking is flawed.

If we are keeping ourselves busy then we are missing out on just sitting with Jesus and letting Him heal us in that silence.  I don’t think Jesus is telling the disciples to go to a deserted place to rest just so they could get some sleep.  I think He was sending them to a deserted place so they could rest and so He could minister to them.  It is often in the silent, alone times that God ministers to us.  There have been several words of prophecy as my prayer group that talks about this silence and how powerful it is.  One of those words was, “Listen to me deeply. When you listen I can help you, heal you, enrich you through my presence. It is in silence that I speak in a new and better way. But if you chatter and chatter and chatter I cannot be there to heal you.”  Another one was, “My children, in the days ahead I ask you to simply be, be with me in silence. Just be and let the silence fill you. Be at peace. Breathe in my Holy Spirit, the very breath of God.”

As you can see, the Lord is still calling us away to a deserted place to be with Him.  He is calling us to just BE with Him in the silence.  I remember Matthew Kelly in one of his books talked about how much you can learn in the classroom of silence.  How much time are you spending in silence with the Lord?  I know I struggle with sitting in the silence.  I feel I always need to be doing something, serving God in some way.  I feel when I am dedicating time to God I need to be praying, or talking, or doing something to honor and praise Him.  And yet, in his own words, in the bible verse as well as the words of prophecy, God is telling us we don’t have to always be doing something.  He is telling us that He wants to meet us in the silence.  He is telling us that in the silence is when He heals us, helps us and enriches us.  He is also telling us that His silence can fill us up.  Do you ever have times when you just feel empty?  I know I do.  We tend to give and give and give of our time and then we forget that we need to stop and recharge at some point.  God is telling us that we can let Him fill us up, but we need to sit with Him and let Him do it.  Have you ever tried to fill your car with gas while you were still driving?  It doesn’t work, you need to stop, even just for a few minutes to fill your car up with gas.  It’s the same with us but we aren’t using gas.  We are filling ourselves with the silence and with the Holy Spirit.

I love the last word of prophecy when the Lord told us to breathe in the Holy Spirit, the very breath of God.  Isn’t that amazing that we get to breathe in the very breath of God.  My mentor, Pamela Crim, has us start out each morning with taking 3 big intentional breaths.  She reminds us that the air we breathe is the very breath of God.  While we are taking these three intentional breaths we are asking God to fill us up with His breath and also with whatever we need to get through the day.  Do you think you could fit this short daily practice into your life?  I know some of us are busier than others, but do you think you have 1 minute a day that you could sit with the Lord and let His breath fill you up?  I wonder how much of a change you will see when you are intentional about spending this 60 seconds with the Lord.  Give it a shot, what have you got to lose?

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, help us to go somewhere deserted and just spend time with you.  Help us to see the importance of slowing down and resting.  Help us to spend time in the silence so you can heal us, help us and enrich us.  Lord, we want all you have to offer, please help us to figure out where and when to make the time to spend with you.  We love you Lord!  We are so grateful that you give us your very breath of life to breathe in and fill us up.  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’ holy name, Amen!

Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  I look forward to spending time with you on Monday.  Have a blessed weekend!

  • The Lord Rejoices In You!

    The Lord Rejoices in You!

Zephaniah 3:17 “ The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”

I think this verse is great because it brings God’s love and affection into light.  This verse gives us a different view of God.  It begins by telling us that the Lord, our God is in our midst.  Is this news to you, or did you already know this?  Did you know that God isn’t just sitting on top of a throne in Heaven looking down on us?  He is all around us.  He is everywhere.  Next, it says that He is a warrior who gives victory.  Do you ever picture the Lord as a warrior?  It’s funny because I know that the Lord fights for us, but I don’t picture Him as a warrior.  When I think of the Lord, I picture Jesus and He seemed to be far from a warrior.

When I think of the word warrior, I think of a soldier that is dressed in armor and armed with weapons.  I bet you get a similar picture in your mind when you hear that word.  However when I looked it up online the Merriam Webster website said the definition of warrior is a person engaged or experienced in warfare broadly.  When I hear this definition I do think of God.  We are all engaged in spiritual warfare, whether we want to be or not.  The enemy is fighting for our souls and if we are not paying attention and fighting back, he will win them.  However, this verse gives us hope.  This verse states that the Lord is a warrior who gives victory.  God has already defeated evil.  The moment Jesus voluntarily gave up His life for ours evil was defeated.  If we can remember this and hold onto this truth we can fight off the evil one.

The reason I said the evil one will win our souls if we aren’t aware and if we aren’t fighting back is because the enemy is constantly trying to trick us.  It says right in John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.”  If we are not aware that the enemy is out there trying to steal our happiness and destroy all the good in our lives, they we may not see his lies for what they are.  He always begins by telling us half truths so that he can gain our confidence.  You may find some truth in the things that the enemy is telling you.  One great way to tell if it is the enemy talking to you or the Holy Spirit talking to you is to pay attention to how you feel afterwards.  The enemy uses these half truths to make you feel bad about yourself, to make you feel angry, shameful, full of regret, of any other negative emotion that you might feel.  The Holy Spirit does sometimes point out things we are doing that are not good, but He always does it with love.  It is always convicting, but not condemning.  If you feel condemned that is not from the Lord.

The last part of the verse gives us an image that we may not have had before. It said, “He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will renew you in His love; He will exult over you with loud singing.”  Not only is it something that you have not thought of before, but it may be hard for you to believe.  If it is hard for you to believe this verse, I want you to remember all the other verses we have done over the past year. I started this podcast last June.  This is episode #252.  If you have been listening for awhile you have heard a lot of verses from the Bible.  You know that God gave us the Bible so we could learn about Him and His ways.  He does not put things in the Bible that are not true.  The Bible is The Word of God.  If you read something in the Bible you can know with confidence that it is true.

This verse says that the Lord rejoices over you with gladness.  How amazing is that?  Can you even imagine what that looks like.  The love of God is something that is given so freely and yet we can have a hard time accepting it.  When we look at ourselves all we see are our flaws.  It’s kinda like when you find the perfect partner.  When you first start dating you wonder what he or she sees in you.  We think this way with God sometimes.  He is so amazing and when we think of ourselves all we see are the ways in which we don’t measure up or the ways we let Him down.  This isn’t how God sees us.  He loves us, flaws in all, and as this verse says, the Lord rejoices over us with gladness.  Take a minute and just sit with that thought.  The Lord rejoices over you with gladness.  Know this to be true with the same certainty that you know all the other verses to be true.  God doesn’t just rejoice over some of His children and not others.  He rejoices over all of us.  This may be easier to understand if you are a parent.  If you are a parent you know that your children are not all the same.  Some behave well, and others not so well.  Some make you happy and others make you sad at times.  However, you love all your children and you rejoice in all of them, you rejoice in their differences.  Our heavenly Father does the same.

The verse also says He will renew you in His love.  I don’t know about you, but I could sure use a renewal in the Lord’s love.  This world is a tough one and it can really wear us down.  There is so much negativity and hatred right now.  I am not sure what is going on but the enemy is having a hay day with our families and our family values.  I hope that God will renew the whole world with His love.  I wonder how many would be receptive to it?  I wonder how many would reject His love.  It seems the world today has decided that they can do things better without the Lord, and look where it is getting us.  I say, Yes Lord, renew me with your love!  I accept all of it.  I will take all the love you want to give me.  It makes me sad that so many are rejecting God’s love these days because the people of this world are starving for love.  They feel so alone and lost.  This world definitely needs a renewal of God’s love.

The verse ends with He will exult over you with loud singing.  Exult means to rejoice, so this verse is repeating the fact that the Lord is rejoicing over us.  However, He is not just doing it with gladness, He is also doing it with loud singing.  Think about the last time your rejoiced with loud singing.  What were you excited about?  We wouldn’t rejoice with loud singing over something that we weren’t excited over.  We don’t rejoice with loud singing that we lost our job or that our car broke down.  We don’t rejoice with loud singing about things that we don’t care about.  Imagine how much the Lord must care about you to be rejoicing with loud singing.  Yes, you.  I know some of you are dismissing the fact that I am talking to you.  You find it easy to believe that the Lord would be rejoicing for other people, but not for you.  The Lord is talking to you specifically in this verse.  The Lord loves you and He is rejoicing with gladness and loud singing for you.  Why is it so hard for you to believe that?  If you are struggling to believe this, first know that you are not a lone, many people struggle to really believe God loves them and the thought that He rejoices over them is too much to believe.  Second, that doesn’t make it any less true.  It is a fact that God loves you and He rejoices over you.  So, if you are struggling to believe this, I challenge you to write this verse on a post it note and place it on your bathroom mirror.  Then read this verse every time you look in the mirror until you start to believe it for the truth that it is.  God loves you, yes you, and He rejoices with gladness and loud songs over you.

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord we ask that you help us to feel your love today and every day.  Lord, help us to believe that you rejoice over us.  Help us to know this is true and to accept your love and rejoicing with a glad and humble heart.  We are not worthy of your love or rejoicing and yet you give it so freely.  Help us be more like you Lord.  Help us to rejoice with gladness and loud singing about those in our lives.  Help us to bring your love into the world around us.  You are so amazing and if we could share a fraction of your love with the world it would be our honor.  We love you Lord and we are so grateful for your love.  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus holy name, Amen.

We have all seen God working in our lives, however, we might not all be aware it is God who is working in our lives.  This is why it is so important we start talking about it more.  The more we share our experiences the more people understand how God works and how much He truly loves us.  If you would be willing to share any experience you have had of how God has worked or is working your life, please email me at [email protected] or just click on the link below.  It won’t take up much of your time and your story could be just the story that someone needs to hear today.  Prayerfully consider sharing.  Everyone has a story and the world needs to hear them.  I look forward to spending time with you again tomorrow and I will have another witness for you next Wednesday.  Have a blessed day!
