The New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials has a new executive director. Barbara Van Epps replaces Peter Baynes, who retired this spring after 17 years. Van Epps began in mid-August and has been with NYCOM since 2006. She previously spent more than a dozen years working for the New York State Division of the Budget’s Local Government Unit.

Most New Yorkers support using federal land and buildings as temporary shelter for migrants and making it easier for the migrants to be granted work authorizations regardless of their immigration status. That’s according to a new poll from the Siena College Research Institute, which finds 60 percent of residents also support a comprehensive immigration reform bill. If a horse becomes just the 14th to win the Triple Crown next year or the year after, history will be made at Saratoga Race Course. That’s because the New York Racing Association plans to bring the Belmont Stakes to Saratoga next June. It comes as downstate Belmont Park prepares for a nearly half-billion overhaul. It would require opening Saratoga early, in June instead of July. The Belmont is the last leg of the Triple Crown, which also includes the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Saratoga’s season currently lasts 40 days, running five days a week from late July through Labor Day. NYRA spokesman Patrick McKenna says with state approval, the move will happen in 2024 to allow for the uninterrupted renovation at Belmont.
