Out in west Texas, along the U.S.-Mexico border, there is a place where you can camp, bike, bird watch, backpack, and see archeological wonders. This is Seminole Canyon State Park, located in Comstock, along the Pecos and Rio Grande Rivers. Humans have inhabited this place for more than 10,000 years, leaving art and glimpses of their lives for today's visitors. The park offers at least three types of tours, outdoor activities, and a museum to give visitors a historical perspective. A day after finishing the Salkantay Trek, Jarrett and most of the group took on an extra hike. Jarrett talks about what it was like hiking up Machu Picchu mountain and the view from there. Meanwhile, Linda and another groupmate took it slower that morning and walked through the Machu Picchu palace. Linda and Jarrett talk about visiting this majestic place during the dry season in 2019, as compared to their visit during the wet season in 2012 to explain the measures the Peruvian government is taking to protect this historic place.

Day 4 on the Salkantay Trail included a steep hike uphill and downhill. The group began its adventure that day at La Playa (6,716 ft / 2,000 m) and hiking for three hours to the ancient Inca lookout of Llactapata (8,694 ft / 2,650 m). From Llactapata, they braved the steep trail downhill for two hours. It was here where Linda experienced another near-miss. Finally, the group arrived at Hidroelectrica (6,233 ft / 1,900 m) and boarded the train to Aguascalientes (6,692 ft / 2,040 m). Thus ended the camping portion of the trail to Macchu Picchu; the visit to the majestic palace would happen the next day.

Day 3 on the Salkantay Trail went downhill - literally.  That day, the trail began at Collpapampa (9,842 ft / 3,000 m) and it was straight downhill to La Playa (6,716 ft / 2,000 m). They hiked 9.7 miles / 15.6 km over seven hours. Needless to say, it was a day when Jarrett and Linda made good use of their walking sticks to venture into jungle territory.

As they ventured into the outskirts of the Amazon, the group left behind the frigid airs of the prior day and were welcomed by a tropical climate. They stopped at several waterfalls and crossed a few more bridges. To reward themselves after the grueling workout of the last few days, when the group arrived at La Playa they grabbed their swimsuits and headed for the hot springs nearby. The journey of the Salkantay Trek to Macchu Picchu marked its highest point at the Salkantay Pass on Day 2. That day, the trail began at Soraypampa (1,263 ft / 3,850 m) and ended at Collpapampa (9,842 ft / 3,000 m). It was the longest hike of the adventure, with 13.5 miles / 21.2 km traversed along more or less eleven hours.

Day 2 also had the highest point of the trek - literally.  Situated at an altitude of 15,090 ft / 4,600 m, the Salkantay Pass is above the point of where vegetation grows. It looked and felt as if being on the moon (at least, based on the pictures we've seen). Coming down from the Pass gave us a chance to walk above and amongst the clouds as we walked through a cloud forest. Jarrett and Linda tell you about their take off from Cusco and their first day of hiking the Salkantay Trail. They describe the challenges, the sites they most remember, and the incidents that stood out to them from their first day and night out on the trail.

Their 2019 adventurous hike began at Challacancha at an altitude of 2,900 m / 9,500 ft. and ended that day in Soraypampa at  3,850 m / 12,795 ft. After first arriving in Soraypampa, the entire group took an evening stroll to the glacial Lake Humantay at 4,200 m / 13,780 ft. At the end of the day, making it to the lake required mustering extra strength and motivation. In this episode, Jarrett and Linda tell you whether it was worth it.
