  • ReCast: 5 Convention Pet Peeves – Wargaming Recon #179
You know what really grinds my gears? What gears you ask? Well the GEARS OF WAR(gaming conventions). Join Jonathan today as he vents his mind in regards to what can improve our beloved gaming cons.
The longest-running tabletop wargaming podcast on the planet

    1 - Unnecessarily Difficult Experiences
It shouldn't be like searching for the Ark of the Covenant to find where you are supposed to be gaming. Failing to number tables for GMs, mentioned in the TotalCon 2017 ep, is a prime example, This is a simple fix and very easy to avoid. Other things would be inadequate gaming space, having the con in hard to find locations, when your GPS says "good luck" when you put in the address is a bad sign.
    2 - Registration problems
You should not be able to pre-register for games that are full. Opening pre-registration for hotel rooms and/or the convention too far in advance also falls into this category. Just like a fat person getting small clothes before they lose weight, when the time comes you just don't know if it will fit.
    3 - Unclear rules
The con should have a clearly stated and found code of conduct/terms of service/policies. They should at least state what is or is not allowed and also how monetary transactions are to occur. By this I mean they should say how much a ticket costs, payment methods, etc. If Moses could present 10 rules to the Hebrews, con organisers could come up with a handful of common sense guidelines.
4 - Lack of gaming variety/too much variety
It is annoying when a con has 5 games using a single system/time period to the detriment of all else.  It is also annoying if there's a lot of different games that don't cover any of the most popular systems/time periods. Clumping similar games/periods together such as all the WW2 games in a Saturday afternoon slot can be another problem. This tends to rely more on the GMs submitting the games as they submit what they like and when they can run the game.  The con does have a responsibility to intervene. Not everyone can be at the con all weekend or can play in that Saturday afternoon.  You need spread things out. Just like vegemite, it is better if its spread lightly and evenly.
    5 - No Attendee Feedback
Every con should strive to provide the best customer service it can. Nobody is perfect and even for those that are great they can benefit from feedback. Every con should have some method for attendees to easily provide feedback. This can be as simple as a SurveyMonkey survey online, feedback forms at the con, or posting on social media. The con needs to take that feedback to heart, think about it, and make any necessary changes.  Don't be like comic store guy from the Simpsons - "worst feedback ever...."

  • ReCast: Sam Mustafa Game Designer – Wargaming Recon #192
Hope you enjoy the first of two “Best of” 2017 episodes. Originally released on September 18, 2017 the episode features game designer Sam Mustafa talking about Aurelian and his new WWII game Rommel.
This ReCast features Alex and Jonathan sharing why this is a best of episode for them.  On behalf of all of us we hope that all of you have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
Don’t worry! We’ll be back with NEW episodes of Wargaming Recon in 2017.
    Game Design
Sam discusses his game design preferences and philosophy as previously discussed in WR 113. Sam gives a few more points to those wanting to get into this part of the hobby.
    Aurelian
Adrian & Jonathan briefly share thoughts on the game they have played and enjoyed.
    Rommel
Rommel is a tabletop game of great battles in the European and Mediterranean theatres of the Second World War. The player takes the role of a general commanding an entire division, or elements of several divisions, or an entire corps or even an army. Units represent companies and battalions. Tens of thousands of men and machines clash for control of miles of territory. Make decisions about the application of air power, engineering, the use of reconnaissance, the commitment of mobile reserves, and many other things.
Sam take the time to talk about its conception and how it fills the gaps between all other WW2 games.

  • Gaming Year in Review – Wargaming Recon #198
Perched in a pizza place, Jonathan and Alex sit and slip into a state of nostalgia as they regale each other with stories from the front (and sometimes from the paint table)
    Alex
Has been spending his time solo gaming with Kings of War by Mantic. He has been talking this game up for a while, and this show notes monkey can tell you it is a great game! Inclusive of all scales and also easy enough for kids to get involved in. Speaking of kids and gaming, Alex has also been playing Castle panic with his daughter, the best draw card in this is that it is a co-op game, which by Alex’s standards is a great way to get kids into gaming. Alex also mentions some time he has spent playing Pandemic, listen to what he lays out while stuffing his face.

    Johnny Boy
Oh Johnny Boy……. the paints, the paints are calling! You have heard it right people, Jonathan has gotten excited for a painting handle, the GW Painting handle to be precise. Leaving to a nice debate between him and Alex in regards to GW product vs Heart Burn Medication Tub. But the paradox to this is – Jonathan Painting. While trying to avoid further argument, Jonathan tells us about his new game “How to get quickly and safely from A to B”. Hopefully the game helps him get his point across.

  • Council of Five Nations 2017 – Wargaming Recon #194
Jonathan and Mike regale us with tales from Council of Five Nations, games played, ideas formed and friendships tested over the battlefield.
    Another Convention
Council of Five Nations is the SWA’s annual gaming convention, held every year in early Autumn. It is one of the longest-running adventure gaming conventions in the world. the 40th Council was held on Sept 29-Oct 1, 2017. The group is focused on quality gaming and on growing the community as their philosophy states “Council strives toward the goal of “quality over quantity”. We’re a medium-sized con, but we try to have top-notch events. We predict an attendance of about 350 this year. As with all the Councils over the years, our goal is a nice balance between role-play games, miniatures, board games and other stuff.”
Jonathan and Mike give their thoughts into how the feel of the con meets those who attended, the auction and the games. See if they match up to what they strived to do.
    Recent Gaming
The boys receive a box of board games to review for TSR and also a shipment from The Warstore with some Bolt Action. (Means Jonathan needs to paint!!!!)
The lads also had a chance to play Travel Battle from the Perry Brothers at Command Zone Games, stay tuned for our review on the new set! In the review we will give you the feedback we received from the unboxing video.

  • Wargamers’ Terrain Hedges – Wargaming Recon #193
Adrian and Jonathan review some wargaming products that are soon to be available online. Specifically hedgerows.
    The Hedgerows
Purchased for $9USD for 1, 9 inch section “the hedgerow comes in other sizes such as 6 inches roughly $1 per inch of hedgerow”.  Made from same compound used in the interior of the FlexFences. They are coated with static grass, twigs, flock, pebbles, and other basing material. They are great for North American & Western European locales.  They also would work for portions of Asia. Customers can contact Joe Linares to order them as they are NOT for sale yet on the Wargamers’ Terrain website.  We purchased ours at Huzzah 2017.
    Model Box
Reviewed it with Mike Paine on Episode 186. We wanted to revisit. At the time Mike wasn’t a fan of it and Jonathan was firmly on the fence. It came up on Episode 187 with guest Joshua Johnson.  He liked the idea. We wanted to tackle it again because there’s been a lot of discussion lately about subscription boxes/crates/etc. Jonathan is quoted saying “I DO NOT PAINT.  Been on record for years saying I don’t assemble & paint minis. Model Box got me to paint and assemble.  Im working on the 2nd fig from that May 2017 Barbarian box and have subscribed to the October 2017 one they’re calling the “Orktober” box”

    From Facebook
Listener Jack had questions about the hedgerows.  He asked:1) How durable are they? 2) How generic are they (i.e. multipurpose)? 3) How easy are they to store?
Listener Jamie asked some terrain questions: “How do you design your tables?” “What does Adrian take into account when planning con games?  Do you think realism, tactics, aesthetics? What do you shoot for and what compeimises do you make?”
Listener Gabriel says “Would be curious to know how fragile and flexible they are.”

  • Sam Mustafa Game Designer: Wargaming Recon #192
Sam Mustafa discusses his game design along with some of his games including Aurelian and his brand new title Rommel.
