Listener Gabriel said of Ep 187: Maine Historical Wargamers Association  “I think that a sort of an MC for Huzzah! would help address a lot of the issues folks mentioned at the con. If there was more of a structured conversation between the Huzzah! hosts and the participants then perhaps it would come across as more engaging and structured.”

  • Great Wargaming Survey 2017 with Jasper Oorthuys: Wargaming Recon 189
This episode we are joined by Jasper Oorthuys (pronounced Yasper Oar-ties) who is the managing director for Karwansaray Publishers. He is also editor of Ancient Warfare magazine. We first discussed the Great Wargaming Survey in 2014 on The Great Wargaming Survey: Episode 123, which has been downloaded almost 3,000 times! Mike Paine takes the co-host seat this time around.
    The 2017 Great Wargaming Survey
Jasper gives us the scoop into the GWS, he tells us what they are aiming to achieve. How and what kind of information gets collected. (“A lot better than the 2016 Australian census” says Joshua Shoobridge).  Jasper also discusses the trends of 2017 and compares that with changes from prior years. One thing they look at is how they appeal to the average wargamer. One thing of note is that Age of Sigmar is the least played game mentioned in the survey.  Surprise surprise, World War 2 is the most played genre of game played among those surveyed. Listen for more to get it all from Jasper himself.

Listener Gabriel said of Ep 185: How to Prep a Convention Game  “For the first 10 years of wargaming I was able to keep my purchases to less than $100 a year. Then again I was doing 1/72 and Ebay is your friend for deals, but folks shouldn’t feel that it needs to be expensive. Some times that is part of the fun finding the stuff at discount or scratch building. Right now we’re doing a lot of scratch builds on the Victorian Science Fiction (VSF) Miniature Gaming Association group. Now, as I am older and I DO have more income laying around, sure, I have to watch my spending because I can easily do $1000 a year if I am not careful, but that is self inflicted so.”

  • Aurelian Review: Wargaming Recon #188
Adrian and Jonathan take some time to go through a new ruleset by Sam Mustafa. We all know that doing a review and playing a game is really an excuse to play a game, but the lads have some great insights in this Roman Wargame
Aurelian – What in the Romulus is it?
Aurelian is a tabletop game about the Crisis of the Third Century. Players take the role of factions – both civilized and barbarian – contending for control of the fragmenting Roman Empire. Designed by Sam Mustafa as part of his Honour series of wargames.
    Where Can I Get it?
For a cracking $29 USD price, you, yes you there painting the mini, can purchase a PDF file of the ruleset. The Rules include print & play action cards & armies (unit tiles). You can purchase the cards separately via WargameVault for $18-20 per deck.
    Gameplay And the Feels!
Adrian takes the reigns to go through in depth about the functionality of the rules. This is from actual gameplay. The lads discuss errors made from their understanding of the rules, things the loved, things they didn’t love and also the role terrain plays in the whole battle! Hint – no magic trees.

Listener Gabriel said Ep184 Huzzah 2017:
Hi – so I’m listening to the discussion around Chain of Command and the mortar attack rule and I agree. Having watched a number of mortar fires they tend to fall around, and there are a lot of things which need to align each time shots are fired. I like to make sure “Danger Close” is dangerous, so that if you start calling for mortars, or worse artillery fires, you risk them falling on you if you are not careful.
But I agree, if you don’t like the indirect fires – change it!

  • Prep a Convention Game: Wargaming Recon #185
Today the lads talk about how the average joe can go about organising a convention game, what they do, how they do it and who gets the credit for it.
    Where to Start
Like most things, the idea is paramount. How to choose it and why it chosen is what is going to make or break the game.
    Whats Next?
You have an idea now, a plan so to speak. Do you really have a plan? Who is doing what and when?
    Final Act
What happens in the days, hours, and minutes leading to game time? Hustle happens.
    Division of Labor
Who does what? This is very important. Especially if you are working in a team or representing a club. Who is accountable for what? What are the contingency plans?
    Cost
Now the bread and butter, the financial, time, and other costs necessary to put on the event are the adult part of this. How much you put in is how much you’ll get out of it.
    Announcement: Wargaming Recon on Video!

Email from Listener Kyle said of Ep 184: Huzzah 2017
“I have a theory as to why Huzzah felt more “subdued” this year.  The convention used to have a very robust presence from regional gaming groups.  There were at least three groups other than the Maine Historical Wargamers that attended.  There was even a trophy that went to the gaming group that had the best participation.
But this year the gaming groups seem to have all but evaporated.  I only saw one person wearing a Northern Conspiracy shirt and not a single shirt from a Boston area gaming group.  When the gaming groups had a much greater presence, the level of camaraderie was much higher – both within groups and between groups.  The energy definitely much more heightened in those years.”

  • Listener Convention Pet Peeves – Wargaming Recon #182
In episode 179 Jonathan revealed his 5 convention pet peeves. After it aired, listeners responded with some of their own.  We received so many that we decided to do an entire episode on it. Now sit back and relax and listen to the sound of the grinding of the gears!
    Listener Pet Peeves
Listener Graydon said “Asking for a table in the main room because you need a big space, they put you in a tiny room…wander into the main room and see a dozen empty tables that you could have used.”
Listener Jonathan (not our Jonathan) said “organisers charging demo gamers to get in.”
Listener Alan said “There aren’t enough of them in Maine.”
Listener Derik said “That guy eating greasy food and picking up my miniatures without asking.”
Listener Guy said “1) The nose picker 2) The smelly and unkempt 3) The nitpicker 4) The Anachronistic Anarchist 5) The sneaky mover 6) The Polemicist 7) The smelly, greasy food eater 8) The guy bumping into the table 9) The chronic wee-wee breaker 10) Ruler tapper 11) Incredible Hot Chick (kidding, never happens)”
Listener Derik said “‘The Tactician’ That’s the guy who interrupts your game to ask you why you didn’t do this, why you aren’t doing this, didn’t you see this?””
Listener Rob said “What happened to the giant backpack wearers (blocking the aisles) or turning round and knocking folks over as they do?”
Listener Allen said “Oh, I would so love to participate in this one. But when I go to conventions I am representing my company. So I have to say that everyone there is just wonderful and I love them all.”
Listener Joseph “No play testing which results in epic tabletop failure. Move for 3 hours talk for an hour. Help pick up an awesome looking game and wonder why you did it to yourself all over again.”
Listener Kevin said “Tables that are not level or do not properly ‘butt’ against one another. Misleading game descriptions. At HMGS-E conventions you can pre-register for a game long before it starts. GMs who never shut up. Broken or non-existent exhaust fans in the public Men’s Room. The guy who shows up with a little kid and says “This is Sheldon. He is eight. I signed him up to play this game. I’ll be back when the game is over.” And then leaves us to babysit (true story). Getting married. Going to a hotel for your honeymoon. Finding it filled with wargamers. (Hey….the sword cuts both ways). Sitting at the hotel bar. wanting a bit of peace and quiet. Only to have a hyperactive, extroverted loudmouth plop down on the bar-stool next to you and recount every single die-roll of the past 8 years. GMs who make sound effects. GMs that “squeeze” their game onto a smaller sized table. Players who argue with the GM.”
Listener Peter said “Know it all GEEKS”
Listener Mark said “Piss poor lighting.”
Listener Guy said “Occasionally, I will liquidate a small portion of my extensive 20mm collection at HGMS – Lancaster PA. I love what I now call “price jackals” or “lowballers” that counter offer my already reasonable prices with ridiculously low offers. It becomes comical after a while. I tend to politely ignore them.”
Listener Peter said “Now on the other hand I find some items that I call. ” RETAIL PLUS” That is when a person is asking just about the full retail or asking retail for a used items that you can go over to the next hall and get it sometimes even less. I have seen it.”
Listener Tim said “Demonstration games covered in empty cans and wrappers. Game ‘hosts’ who stand around chatting with their club mates and ignore the public.”
Listener Graydon said “Going to HMGS conventions for fifteen years and you’ve never seen anyone put on the whole Battle of Leipzig s[...]

  • Wargamers’ Terrain Review – Wargaming Recon #181
Wargamers’ Terrain is made by Joe Linares from western Massachusetts.  It is often found as a vendor at New England conventions such as Huzzah.  Each piece is made by hand, not by casting.  The company began in 2003.

    Ordering
Add specific items to cart on their website.  Pay via Paypal when finishes (You get Paypal’s protection plus you can include notes!!!) After Jonathan ordered he received an e-mail from Joe asking his color preference for the rivers.
    By default they are blue/green.
    Other options are:
    Mostly blue
    Mostly green
    Mostly brown
You can also ask for other color combos
You can also get custom shapes instead of the default.  Just contact Joe in advance. Jonathan placed order end of 2nd week in November 2016, it was shipped via USPS with tracking on Dec 1st, 2016. It then arrived Dec 3rd, 2016. The longest wait is time for products to cure.  Several days for fences etc
Check out his initial reaction here
    Conclusion
We highly recommend Wargamers’ Terrain products. The FlexRivers in particular are quite exceptional.

Listener Kyle said of Ep179 5 Convention Pet Peeves. “For me it boils down to this: If I am going to spend lots of time and money to attend a convention. I want to make sure that I know exactly what I am registered for and that I don’t have to worry about any hiccups. I know that these people are volunteers, so I am willing to cut them some slack. Having said that, I wasn’t pleased that [a local con] opened up registration early[ier than expected]. It definitely cost me some games.”
