Listener Rhys wrote on The Wargames Website “Just listened to [Henry Hyde’s episode] whilst painting-great stuff keep up the good work. I have to admit that it was the first time I had listened to your podcast after seeing it, but will definitely be listening to the rest whilst painting.”
    On Twitter:
Listener Lars tweeted “Just found your podcast, excellent stuff!”
    Via our Facebook page:
Listener Jay wrote “Jonathan, I was listening to WR 113 in which you ask ‘Are painted miniatures essential to miniatures wargaming.’ A little behind the times, I know, but bear with me. I’m of a few minds on the topic. For one, it’s your hobby, do with it how you feel. In the privacy of one’s home, what one does with other consenting adults with their toy soldiers is their own business. I’ve played plenty of games with wholly unpainted forces. Doesn’t bother me one bit. That being said, if you’re participating in an organized public event, you should at least have basic painting done. On some figures, this is easier than others. For example, the 15mm WWII Soviets I’m currently painting will have no fewer than seven colors on them just to get to ‘fully base coated’ stage. That’s not counting any shading or highlighting that may take place. Or basing effects. But! I feel better having a fully painted force on the table. It’s a better representation of the multi-disciplinary nature of the hobby. As I said, it’s a multi-disciplinary hobby. The facets one chooses to pursue are up to the individual. Of course, the irony of listening to the episode while painting said WWII Soviets is not lost on me! Please continue the podcast. Good luck to your wife with the rest of her pregnancy. Henry’s latest episode is what drew me to pull the trigger and add your show to my Downcast queue! I guess I was implying what I should have expressed, hell no, they’re not essential! At least not as essential as miniatures are in general. Which could lead to another topic altogether. What happens when you take a boardgame such as Command & COlors: Ancients and use miniatures in place of blocks or chits on a mat or fully realized terrain board?”
Listener Adam said “Not really a fan of Victrix they are too brittle (lots of broken muskets on my 28mm boys)”
We’ve crafted a few theme weeks on our Facebook page. Did 2 weeks of 54mm photos and 1 week of Napoleonics. Check them out.

    Wargaming With Kids
Jonathan shares tips for adults hoping to get kids into wargaming. These are also useful for wargaming parents looking to find a wargaming event at which their child can play.
    Simplify the rules
    Fun is the goal
    Durability is important
BONUS: Whenever you see the name Mike Paine as a GM at a game day or a convention you NEED to sign up to play in Mike’s games. He is a superstar GM and he’s fantastic with kids. He always says that his games are for kids and adults who will play nicely with kids. Whenever I see his name at a con I immediately sign up for his stuff. Plus he’s an all around nice guy.

THIS IS THE FIXED VERSION. PLEASE DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION OF EPISODE 119 AND NOT THE OTHER. WE REGRET THE ERROR.
    Henry Hyde Wargaming Author
Henry Hyde comes back on the show for his third appearance. Henry talks about his book the Wargaming Compendium, wargaming, and what he’s been up to.
In a special segment after the show Henry and Jonathan discuss Jonathan’s Ancient Rome inspired imagi-nation campaign the War of Latinian Expansion. Jonathan is blending computer gaming with traditional tabletop gaming.
He used the Plastic Soldier Review website to choose his 1/72 scale HaT Industrie models and 1/72 scale Caesar Miniatures. The HaT models cost under $10 USD for almost 50 infantry from the Hobby Bunker in Malden, Mass (or their online storefront). Caesar Miniatures’ boxes are only slightly higher at $11.95 for 40+ infantry also from the Hobby Bunker.
During the show Jonathan mentions the controversial Episode 113: Are Painted Minis Essential to Miniatures Wargaming? and Henry surprises Jonathan with his thoughts on the topic.
Before the show concludes Jonathan makes a VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT. His wife and he are expecting their first child! The baby is due the beginning of February 2015. Jonathan looks forward to having a little one to introduce to the hobby.

Have a clear idea of your EXPECTATION. Determine if it matches what the project creator is doing.
COMMUNICATE with the project creator BEFORE backing. This is the best way to ask questions.
Only pledge when you KNOW the project creator, their work, or a respectable person you trust vouches for the creator and the project.
Closely EXAMINE the Kickstarter project. Does it seem too good to be true? Is it unreasonable? Or impossible?
Pledge no more money than you can afford to LOSE if things go sour.

  • ReCast: Battle of Abington – Wargaming Recon #62
Jonathan is sick so there is NO NEW EPISODE right now. To make up for it we’re sharing this episode from the vault. The classic episode comes to you from the dark ages where the show had a different name. Since this is a CLASSIC episode some of the links, content, giveaways, contests etc may be out of date or ended.
Don’t worry! Next time we’ll be back with a NEW episode of Wargaming Recon.
Host Jonathan J. Reinhart releases a short show. The episode begins, unusually, with Dispatches from HQ.
The bulk of this episode is devoted to the Battle of Abington. This was a custom scenario created by Adrian Benson for Cort, Jonathan, and he to play with Warlord Games’ Black Powder rules. The trio met at Battleground Games & Hobbies in Abington to play using the models they have finished painting.
Jonathan fielded one American militia regiment and one Continental artillery battery. Adrian teamed up with Cort. Cort brought two British infantry regiments and Adrian used one small Hessian musketeer regiment. The battle is discussed, mis-steps announced, and rules mentioned. You can read battle reports at Black Powder AWI demo game (from the Hessian point of view) and The Battle of Abington (American point of view). Further discussion of the game can be found on this blog or by joining the Black Powder Wargamers of New England Yahoogroup.
The show concludes with a mention that The Whiz, Rte 9 East in Westborough, is moving! They will move 2 miles closer to 495. See The Whiz is Moving for full details. They will be at their new location as of September 1st. Until then they are offering 15-50% off everything in store. Jonathan used this opportunity to stock up on TONS of Dystopian Wars stuff including the rulebook, game cards, Prussian Empire battle box, Prussian Empire bombers, and the Prussian Pflicht Scoutship blister.
