The dictionary defines opportunity as a good position, chance, or prospect, as for advancement or success. The church at Philadelphia had an “open door” before it. This was Jesus’ way of saying they faced an opportunity. What’s amazing is that they were small and poor and seemingly had little to work with. This is a situation that many today face. But we too have an opportunity before us. In this letter we can learn how we might seize the opportunities we have.

The church at Sardis had the reputation of being alive. Jesus’ complaint was that they were actually dead. Is it possible that a church or believer can be active, busy doing good things, and still be dead?

Jesus had great things to say about the Church in Thyatira. But he also had some serious concerns. Primary among His complaints was the permissive nature of the church. In an age where tolerance is so valued it will be interesting to see what Christ has to say on the subject.

The church at Pergamum had some good things going for it. The had held up the name of Jesus and had strong unfailing faith. But they also had some problems. They were allowing some of their congregation to live worldly lives and be influenced by worldly beliefs. Jesus issued them a strong warning and offered them a way out and a glorious promise. “It’s all good.” This familiar saying characterizes what many Christians believe about their faith. They are convinced, often by false teachers, that if you are a “good” Christian bad things won’t happen to you. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Jesus assured us that if we followed Him we would suffer persecution and that we would face difficulties. It the letter to the church at Smyrna we can learn lessons about how we endure suffering.

The church at Ephesus was hard working, willing to sacrifice, theologically sound, and unwilling to tolerate heretical teaching. But they had a problem. They had lost their first love.
