  • Code of Honor: Warrior Mind Podcast #491

Over six years and going strong!  With over 1M downloads from over 15 countries and 7 continents’…. this is the Warrior Mind Podcast.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to discuss the importance of having a personal Code of Honor and how it helps direct our life’s actions.

How To Develop a Personal Code of Honor

Have you ever wondered how you can develop a personal code of honor? Developing a personal code of honor is a significant thing to do for yourself. Essentially, you put in writing the philosophies and ideas that are your nature. A personal code of honor allows you to commit to these philosophies because you believe in them.

You can look at your code of honor document each day to remind yourself of what you believe and to encourage yourself to abide by what you believe.

Now the real question is how you can develop your code of honor. Developing is quite simple, but it takes time and requires thought on your part.

The first step is to take a close look at your life. Whom do you believe yourself to be? Ask yourself how a friend would respond if they were asked to describe you. Would someone say you are kind and compassionate? Put down all the traits that your relatives and friends may have said to your paper.

The second step is to put thought into what you believe. Ask yourself what your ethical beliefs are. These are the beliefs that shape your life by influencing your decision making. Questioning why you believe in them is not important at this point. Just ensure you write as many of your ethical belief as you can think of.

The next step is to look at how you relate to people. Think about how you deal with family members, friends, workmates, and even strangers. In addition, consider the various places where live, work and play. Is there anything related to honor that has a negative impact on how you relate with people? List the changes you would like to make. This list should involve things as obvious as arguing with family to things of little importance such as gossip.

The next step is where you question why you believe in what you believe. This is an essential step as it helps you establish how important each of your belief is to you. The source of most beliefs is religion. Next to each belief, list the verses or teachings that each of your belief is based on.

At this point you know who you are, your beliefs, and the reasons behind your beliefs. With all this information, you can now develop a personal code of honor. This last step is not as hard as it might sound. However, it will take you time, as you have to decide what is important enough to include in your code of honor, and what is not important enough to include.

Enjoy this podcast on your code of honor

A Personal Code of Honor Has Three Parts:

The first section is the purpose. Here is where you write why you are writing the personal code of honor. Are you writing it to adjust your behavior or is its purpose inspirational? Answering the question of the purpose of your code of honor allows you to develop the philosophy behind it. The purpose, as well as the code of honor itself, should match your needs and help you become a better human being in the society.

The second section is “I Will” of the personal code of honor. Remember where you wrote whom you are based on what you believe you are and what other people perceive you to be?

  • Rules of the Game: Warrior Mind Podcast #490

Over six years and going strong!  With over 1M downloads from over 15 countries and 7 continents’…. this is the Warrior Mind Podcast.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to go over the mental strength rules of the game and the importance of them on your personal success.

Mental Strength Rules of the Game

How do we run our own mind?

So you want to take back control of your own mind?

    Good on you.

    What a wonderful goal!

And in this day age so rare.

Many people talk about taking back control of their mind and taking charge of their thoughts, but just watch them when criticized or insulted. They go to pieces. Let one of their closely held beliefs be questioned, and watch out.

Sudden it becomes semantic reaction time.

They explode with rage, anger, stress, fear, shock, etc. If they truly “control their own minds,” how is it that they lack state management skills in the moments when managing one’s reactions really counts?

Taking control of our own mind, and thinking freely in independent ways apart from rehashing worn-out or spoon fed thoughts necessitates several things.

It necessitates that we develop mindfulness about our minds (or more accurately, our minds) so that we actually develop state management skills. It means we learn to play a new Game, “I am in control of my mind and thoughts” game.

    So, with that in mind:

What essentials do you need to know to take back control of your mind and thoughts?

Read them VERY carefully, they help you establish an understanding of the game of “I am in control of my mind and thoughts.”

    Rules of the Game

#1: Thoughts are Things – Thoughts are things, they are real forces, and they are energy and are the ‘cause’ of all your ‘effects.’ Weak and scattered thoughts are weak and scattered real forces. Strong and concentrated thoughts are strong and concentrated real forces!

#2: Thoughts are Bidirectional – The mind is like a two-way radio, it is a sending and receiving station of thoughts. We are constantly affecting the outside environment with our thoughts, and the outside environment…those people, groups and communities we associate with…are constantly affecting our thoughts, particularly in sales.

#3: Thoughts are Like Magnets – Thoughts that are thought with emotion become magnetized and attract similar and like thoughts. Any thought that has emotion attached to it, changes the dynamic and the “energy” of the thoughts, i.e. negative thoughts attract more negative thoughts and positive thoughts attract more positive thoughts.

#4: Minds Follow Directions – They take the directions that you give them and they follow them. Provide a little description and the mind goes to work representing the information on our internal mental screen. Like a movie director, minds use the information as instructions for our mental Cinema. This explains why the following are very important questions for our states:

    * What directions are you giving your mind?* What are the default instructions that you’ve learned to give your mind?* What instructions did your parents or teachers provide you about yourself, life, others, etc.?* How useful, ecological, healthy, balanced, valuable, true, etc. are those instructions?* Do those instructions create empowering states for you?* Would you want to give those instructions to your children?* Do they map out an exciting and loving life?

Over six years and going strong!  With over 1M downloads from over 15 countries and 7 continents’…. this is the Warrior Mind Podcast.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to discuss the nine Laws of the Mind and the importance of them on your personal success.

9 Laws of the Mind for Peak Performance

Law 1: What You Think Is What You Get

Any image placed into the subconscious mind develops into reality with absolute accuracy.

Law 2: Every Thought Causes a Physical Reaction

Your thoughts affect all of the functions of your body.

Law 3: Imagination is More Powerful Than Knowledge

Images are the property of the subconscious mind.  Those images will always overpower what you think.

Law 4: Your Habits Are Your Life

Much of your day consists of successions of actions, 98% of what you do, you do by habit, spontaneously.

Law 5: Negative Thoughts Breed Like Cockroaches

The more attention and power you give to your fears, the more they affect you and the more likely they are to manifest themselves.

Enjoy this podcast on the nine laws of the mind

    More Laws of the Mind

Law 6: Attitude is a Matter of Choice

And attitude is basically the way in which you look at life or your performance.  You have the ability to choose your attitude in any circumstance.

Law 7: Reactions Must be Managed

Just as you can manage your attitude, you can manage your reactions.  What happens in your life is purely neutral.

Law 8: Thoughts Must be Kept Alive

No thought is self-sustaining in the mid, it must be nurtured, fed, and kept alive. Only one idea can be entertained at one time.

    Law 9: Attitude of Gratitude

One of the laws of the universe is what you put forth comes back to you, and usually when it does it has gained massive momentum.  In other words, what goes around – comes around.

Over six years and going strong!  With over 1M downloads from over 15 countries and 7 continents’…. this is the Warrior Mind Podcast.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to discuss grit, its association with mental strength and its importance.

5 Keys to Developing Your Grit

Some people persistently chase their long-term dreams while others tend to get distracted by new projects or ideas along the way. This concept plays a huge role in predicting how successful each one of them will be in life. The people who strike out of their long-term goals for new ideas often get stuck while those that pursue their passions obstinately advance steadily and get actual results. This is what separates these two groups of people. According to Angele Duckworth, a professor of psychology, effort counts twice as much as talent. When you put effort into talent, you get a skill, and when you put effort to a skill, it results in achievement. This is why Grit counts twice and is such an essential factor in achieving your goals.

Grit is the passion and persistence for long term goals. It’s psychological meaning has two components; the aptitude to stick to long-term objectives and the aptitude to stay going in spite of harsh conditions. According to researchers, Grit is the best forecaster of success. You need the Grit to help you achieve your long terms goals no matter what they are, and the good thing is that it is possible to develop your Grit. You can apprehend your full potential by observing life as a long marathon rather than a short sprint and by refining particular factors that are indirectly linked to Grit. Here is an exclusive look at 5 tips to develop your Grit.

More On Grit and Mental Strength

    1.    Chase Your Interests

Pursuing goals that do not captivate, you will give you a hard time. The first step in developing your Grit is identifying what your interest is. This, however, does not mean just sitting around and thinking about your passion. It is more efficient if you get out there and try out different things until you find one thing that you are most passionate about. Once you know your interest, it’s time to get a role model or mentor to help you get better.

    2.    Relate to A Higher Purpose

A compelling interest is not enough in developing your Grit. People who become grittier are those that connect their interests to a higher purpose.  You need to take a step back and reflect on how the thing that you are passionate about contributes to promoting the well-being of other people. This is useful in helping you grow your Grit and also enjoy what you are doing more. So, it’s essential you connect what you do to a higher purpose of benefiting the people around you.

    3.    Stay Around Gritty People

The people around you influence your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors greatly. If you spend much time with a group of people, you begin doing the things that they do. Their values and norms will rub off on you and become your new ways. This means that surrounding yourself with positive peer pressure is an effective way of developing your Grit. Stay around gritty people, and you will be gritty yourself in no time.

    4.    More And More Practice

  • Resilience and Mental Strength: Warrior Mind Podcast #487

Over six years and going strong!  With over 1M downloads from over 15 countries and 7 continents’…. this is the Warrior Mind Podcast.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to discuss reliance, its association with mental strength and its importance.

    Resilience

“The process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress — such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems or workplace and financial stressors. It means “bouncing back” from difficult experiences.”

     Key aspects of resilience training:

    * Developing an optimistic outlook for the future* Developing solid goals, as well as the desire to accomplish them* Developing our compassion and empathy* Developing our focus on what we can control, rather than what we can’t.

    Resilience training involves:

    * Understanding and working on our internal locus of control* Developing our emotional regulation and awareness* Developing our self-efficacy* Learning to tolerate ambiguity* Developing realistic optimism

Enjoy this podcast on the resilience and mental strength

    More Resilience and Mental Strength

Is Mental Strength Training the Same as Resilience Training?

Not quite, because mental strength and resilience themselves aren’t technically identical.

Mental Strength can be thought of as more akin to ‘Mental Hardiness’, a personality trait. Mental Toughness and Resilience are often used to refer to each other.

Resilience, on the other hand, is more commonly considered a process. Resilience has been defined very similarly by different researchers. These include:

    * Resilience as good adaptation to risk exposure* Resilience as a developmental progression to encompass new strengths* Resilience as the possession of social assets, such as close relationships with others

    Mental Resilience Training

During MRT, US Army soldiers go through seven different modules that cover three main components

    1. Preparation – This covers psychoeducation on the nature of resilience, the mental factors behind it, and how to grow them. These mental factors, or MRT competencies, include:

    * Self-awareness* Self-regulation* Mental agility* Optimism* Connections* Character strengths

    2. Sustainment – the focus of the Sustainment component is to reinforce and apply the resilience skills covered in the Preparation aspect of the course. Soldiers learn to recognize and anticipate what being deployed can involve psychologically, as well as ways to remain resilient and nurture resilience in peers.

    3. Enhancement – based heavily on sports psychology principles, the enhancement component covers one module. Here, MRT teaches goal-setting, confidence-building, energy management, and more.

    The Benefits of Resilience

Coping with stress in a positive way is known as resilience, and it has many health benefits. It’s associated with longevity, lower rates of depression, and greater satisfaction with life. There’s a sense of control, and it helps people feel more positive in general.

Likewise, a lack of resilience means that you may not handle stress well in difficult situations.

Over six years and going strong!  With over 1M downloads from over 15 countries and 7 continents’…. this is the Warrior Mind Podcast.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to review the last of the 4 c’s of Mental Strength, Control.

    CONTROL

This quality determines if you are in control of your life and are confident that you can get things done. This involves both life control and emotional control. Sometimes you may feel like you are not getting anything done and start to have bad thoughts about your progression. But work through challenges and gain control.

Control – Control means having a sense of self-worth and describes the extent to which a person feels in control of their life and their circumstances. Also, importantly it describes the extent to which they can control the display of their emotions.

    * Life Control* I believe I can do it, it’s in my control* Emotional Control* I can manage my emotions and the emotions of others

    More Mental Strength and Control

A Mentally Strong person with high control will usually just “get on with it” irrespective of how they feel and work through emotionally charged situations without seemingly being distracted or derailed. This ‘calm’ and positive approach can also often lift the spirits of those around them.

  • Confidence and Mental Strength: Warrior Mind Podcast #485

Over six years and going strong!  With over 1M downloads from over 15 countries and 7 continents’…. this is the Warrior Mind Podcast.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to review the third of the 4 c’s of Mental Strength, Confidence.

    CONFIDENCE

Confidence shows whether or not you are a self-assured person. You want to be seen as someone who always achieves goals. Be the person who succeeds when others tend to just give up when things get rough. Strive to be the person who continues to push ahead when challenges seem too difficult.

There are two things that make up confidence. First, you have to have confidence in your abilities. Some people are able to do the job, but they don’t believe that they can do it. This means that they fail because they don’t use all of their available tools to reach goals. On the other hand, there are those who don’t have a lot of abilities, but they get the job done because of their strong mental strength.

Believe in yourself. You may be qualified to do a job, but you are not successful because you don’t believe in your abilities. On the other hand, you may not be qualified for a job, but you are the successful candidate because you are confident in your abilities.

    More Mental Strength and Confidence

Secondly, you have to possess interpersonal confidence. Your success depends on how well you are able to take criticism. All in all, when it comes to the 4C’s, they are all different, but mental strength connects them.

Research shows that the four C’s are independent, but they are all connected by the concept of Mental Strength.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to review the second of the 4 c’s of Mental Strength, Challenge.

    CHALLENGE

There are two parts to challenge:

    * I will take risks, I will push myself, I am driven to succeed

The challenge part of Mental Strength determines if an individual is willing to accept life’s challenges and continue to develop. Can you perform under both flexible and predictable circumstances and do well in each type of situation? There are those who can only perform well during regularly scheduled activities. Also, some people tend to take on more than they can handle, and they get overwhelmed.

    More Mental Strength and Challenge

    * I will learn from my experience, even setbacks are opportunities for learning

There are two things to understand. First, there is preparedness. Some people are able to work outside of their comfort zone and be willing to take on extra risks. Secondly, some have the ability to see both good and bad opportunities as learning resources. If something bad happens, do you have what it takes to turn things around and learn from your mistakes instead of grumbling?

  • Commitment and Mental Strength: Warrior Mind Podcast #483

Over six years and going strong!  With over 1M downloads from over 15 countries and 7 continents’…. this is the Warrior Mind Podcast.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to review the first of the 4 c’s of Mental Strength, Commitment.

    COMMITMENT

There are two parts to commitment:

    * Do you set specific goals that push you?

This quality determines if you can finish and push through life’s challenges, even if things get rough. This includes finding the motivation to complete all tasks. If a person has resilience and tenaciousness, he can finish all tasks and not let things get in the way.

There will be times when others are intimidated by your level of commitment. This is especially true if they are not as mentally strong as you are. Most people understand when a person has a high level of commitment to certain projects. It is often expected. But problems arise when a strong commitment is made towards routine tasks.

This type of commitment might be good for very hard challenges, but the mentally strong are also known for behaving this way when it comes to daily projects. Thus, others may not want to work with you because of your strong commitment to goals. Making a commitment means that you are willing to set a goal and do everything possible to meet that goal.

Enjoy this podcast on the mental strength and commitment

    More Mental Strength and Commitment

    * Did you learn something positive?

There is no such thing as failure, only useful results. ‘Failures’ are feedback that we need to correct our way towards a desired outcome. We can negatively label what we do which falls short of success as ‘failure’ or alternatively, we could view it positively as feedback or information to enable us to seek revision or improvement

When our carefully laid plans have gone awry, most of us tend to think we have failed. Before we conclude hastily that we have failed, should we not pause for a moment and ask which is more beneficial – to regard it as a ‘failure’ or to treat it as a helpful feedback. View it as failure and considerable odds are we will give up easily with consequent lack of confidence in pursuing similar plan in future. Failure is a dead end. Not so with feedback which empowers us to adopt corrective measures and redouble our efforts to strive for the outcome.

We need to know constantly whether we are on the right path towards attaining our outcome. Feedback affords us an excellent opportunity to do just that – gather more information so that we stay within the course or learn how to overcome unexpected obstacles which are bound to arise on our road to success. With feedback, we get to know how much progress we have made thus far or we are succeeding or have succeeded.

Feedback is positive. Failure is negative. A clear difference exists between these two ways of thinking. Feedback enables us to learn from our mistakes – for instance, we have to put in more efforts, change our behavior or adjust our priorities. Failure, on the other hand, evokes adverse feelings such as erosion of confidence, a poor self-image or lack of incentive to improve which inevitably leads to low level of achievement.
