John Lovell shoots his 'whack-a-mole' drill during a pistol class he taught at Clint Smith's Thunder Ranch. This drill is for when you do not have (and cannot immediately gain) fire superiority. John's preferred way to work cover is to gain ground and not to retreat back behind cover. Fast and effective fire should be constantly barraging the hiding enemy. If you are unable to pin the enemy down, you may have to play this fatal game of whack-a-mole, where unfortunately, YOU are the mole. The coach should wait for the shooter to expose ANYTHING to the target down range, and then the coach will yell "I'm Up! He sees me! I'm Down". By the time the last phrase is called, the shooter should be back down behind cover. This script is given as a cadence for how long the shooter has to land an effective shot before getting shot by an ambushing enemy who has pinned them down.

John Lovell shooting the Malfunction Mayhem Drill, created by Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch. In this drill, a line of guns are staged on the line with random stoppages (the shooter should not observe the guns prior to the drill). On the command 'Fight', the shooter must identify the problem with each firearm, fix the problem, and then shoot 3 center mass hits on the target directly in front of them. No do overs, no gaming, no mulligans. Just embrace the chaos and rise above it. This drill is designed to ensure you can clear stoppages without thinking, your clearing process works on a variety of guns, you can think and perform under stress and confusion.

Proper use of cover and/or concealment is a science and an art. 1 or 2 inches can literally mean the difference between life and death, victory or defeat. It is critical that we avoid flagging anything so that bad guys won't gain any indicator of where you will be coming from, and then a sudden counterattack on your part means victory. This video is meant for civilians, police, and members of the military who are interested in home defense, surviving violent assaults, personal defense, etc.

Here is the first rule I teach students when talking about civilian tactics - you are very easy to kill. It's not a fun thought, and many of us (myself included) recoil at the thought, but it is true. The trick is to know how criminals attack and to know when and where we are vulnerable. This is the first real task in protecting ourselves and defending our families from all kinds of violent crimes. Train hard and train smart warrior poets!

If you ever have to defend yourself, it is most likely to be in or around structures. Fights in civilian and law enforcement contexts rarely happen in open fields -- they happen in homes, offices, restaurants, gas stations, etc. It is important we know how to clear rooms if we expect to be good defenders and protectors. One difficulty in all this is that much of the room clearing knowledge circulating is really about team clearing tactics. If an individual employs team clearing tactics (without a team present), they are likely over-penetrating constantly and are very easy to kill.
