Kris 'Tanto' Paronto at SHOT Show 2017

It was awesome running into Tanto, a Ranger buddy, and one of the heroes of Benghazi. In this quick interview, I ask Tanto to give advice to younger folks in the military. He is a great role model as a solid warrior, and as a man living with conviction according to his Christian faith.

Kris Paronto - “Tanto” as he is affectionately known in security contracting circles - is a former Army Ranger from 2nd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment and private security contractor who has deployed throughout South America, Central America, the Middle East and North Africa. He also worked with the US Government’s Global Response Staff conducting low profile security in high threat environments throughout the world.

Kris 'Tanto' Paronto was part of the CIA annex security team that responded to the terrorist attack on the US Special Mission in Benghazi, Libya, September 11th, 2012, helping to save over 20 lives while fighting off terrorists from the CIA Annex for over 13 hours. Mr. Paronto’s story is told in the book “13 Hours” written by Mitchell Zuckoff and his five surviving annex security team members. The movie 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi by Michael Bay also tells the story of Paranto's involvement in the Benghazi attack.

Combatives expert Tony Blauer and tactics instructor John Lovell talk at SHOT Show 2017 on teaching philosophy.

It was a great privilege to meet and hang out with Coach Blauer, a combatives expert, and pioneer in the world of self-defense. Over lunch we talked fighting, life philosophy, family, the gun industry, and more with plenty of Tony's colorful (may or may not be a euphemism) sense of humor. I love the man.

Coach Tony Blauer is the founder of the SPEAR system (Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response) is a close quarters system that seeks to use natural reflexes (or flinch response) to initiate counter attacks in violent encounters. Tony Blauer founded this system back in the 1980s and has since gone on to train thousands of military, law enforcement, civilians, and even celebrities, in his style of self-defense which has forever changed how we think about defending ourselves in violent encounters. Kyle Lamb & John Lovell at SHOT Show 2017

In my opinion, a fighting rifle is not complete until it has a good sling. Finding the right sling can be a challenge, but it doesn't have to be. There are a lot of slings I despise such as 3 point slings, other slings I prefer not to run such as single point slings, and then there are my beloved 2 point slings.

I prefer the Vickers Sling by Blue Force Gear and Larry Vickers for reasons I will discuss in this video, however there are other good slings I would use such as: The 5.11 VTAC 2 Point Sling by Kyle Lamb of Viking Tactics; the D3 Sling by Travis Haley of Haley Strategic; the MS4 or MS3 Sling by Magpul Dynamics.

'Laugh at Your Misery and Fear' with tactics and firearms instructor John Lovell.

How do soldiers cope with the pressures of war? How does someone endure horrible misery? How can you prepare to do the same? Though there is a lot that goes into building good 'fighter mindset', in this video I discuss a piece of that which I never hear mentioned. Whenever I have brought up this subject to war veterans, fighters, police, military, contractors, and other high-risk professionals, I'm always greeted with agreement. A good sense of humor, especially when things seem hopeless, can do great things to help you endure the hardship, and bring you closer to others. In this video I also share some very stupid war stories and memories of basic training. I also discuss relevant links to comedians like Jim Carey and Robin Williams.
