Once matter is created it cant be destroyed, that's what Kay's brother always told her.  So when he passed away she knew she was able to rely on him as a protector.  After the sprit of a bereaved mother followed Kay's daughter home form the hospital , it was her brother that came to the rescue,  along with some other guardians.
