Join us as we dive into John chapter 8:1-11 and the account of the woman caught in adultery. 

Jesus said in John 8:31-32;34 “If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” “ Truly, truly I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.” Scripture makes it very clear that we are bound by sin in this world. If you look around at society and culture, it won’t take long for you to see how people, including ourselves, can be trapped in certain lifestyles that all lead to destruction. Sin takes. It always has and it always will. The wages of sin lead to death and sin when it is fully grown, or matured, brings death. Christ came to set the captive free, and whom the Son sets free, is free indeed. When a woman is brought before Christ in the very act of her sin, by the religious rulers, she hears God’s voice speak freedom into her life, while the rest of the crowd walks away. But she isn’t the only one who needs free from sin, so do all those trapped in the sin of  self righteousness. Whether it’s sexual sin, self righteous sin, or any other sin Christ wants us free to sin no more. Come find out what happens when we encounter grace.

We like a God we can be comfortable with. We want a God that will give us hugs, smiles, pats on the back, and tell us how much he loves us. But the God of the Bible is not always a comfortable God. A good God—yes; a loving God—yes; a comfortable God—not always! The Bible is full of stories about God’s patience, grace, and mercy with his children. But we also find stories about God’s immediate and severe discipline. And those stories make us uncomfortable. Yet, an uncomfortable God is just what we need. Explore with Pastor Tim how God’s discipline is both uncomfortable and comforting.

Paul’s epistle to the Colossians has been called a polemic epistle.

In other words, it is an argument or an apologetic for truth.

We live in a world that is in a truth drought or a truth famine.

Today’s society wants truth to be blurred; relative.

Truth, by its very nature, can neither be blurred nor relative.

There is truth, and there is opinion, and there is what is blatantly false.

But, truth stands alone as pure; it is above opinion and falsehood.

The line between truth and opinion is clear and sharp; nothing blurred.

Paul reminds us in Colossians 1, truth has a name: Jesus.

So what are we to do when God is at work, and great things are happening in His church? Remember that it is God who is at work. Give Him the praise and glory and point people to Jesus. The writer of the Proverbs tells us, "A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold." (Pr 22:1). It has also been said that "A person's name is the greatest connection to their own identity and individuality." 

So then, we must speak the name of Jesus, for it tells us and others who He is and His mission of salvation. Jesus' name speaks to the identity of the GOD-MAN who died for our sins. Peter will say, "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name [Jesus] under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12). Our salvation is connected directly to the name of Jesus and the Gospel message is fully connected to His name. 

Now, there is power in His great name. Consider Luke 10:17, "Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." The power over the kingdom of darkness was, and still is, in the name of Jesus. Paul goes on to say, "Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Php. 2:9-11)

There is power in the name of Jesus! Do we believe that? Do we share that?

Generally, in Church, we have all heard someone say, "Remember, We are in the world but not of it." Now in principle, I would never disagree with that statement. You and I are not of the world anymore. We are in Christ, and everything is new (2 Corinthians 5:17). 

We are, without question, not to be loyal to this world and the sinful corruption that controls it. (See 1 John 2:15-17) However, I may wish to rephrase this idea to encompass our relational responsibilities to the world as long as we are camping out waiting for the rapture or if the LORD terries death that one day comes to pay us all a visit. (The problem with death is that he will not leave.) 

I would suggest we say it like this, "We are not of this world, but we have a divine charge to influence our community as the Image bearers of God. Seeking to use the relational power of the Holy Spirit to fulfill our responsibilities as the image of God, seeking to create communities of Shalom."

What God did through Luther in recovering the message of salvation and did through Wesley in recovering the message of holy life and service, He did through the early Pentecostal revival in recovering the dynamism of the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit to the Church and how we use them to better those we have contact with.

I am amazed and, at times, overwhelmed when I think about the beautiful gift of salvation we fully receive by faith in Jesus Christ alone. God's grace and forgiveness are the message of the Gospel. God's freely given grace for the undeserving. That describes me! We can do nothing to earn our place in the kingdom of God. Nothing at all!

In Joel 2:23, we read, "And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved." This verse is quoted by Peter in his first sermon (Acts 2:21) and later by Paul in his letter to the Romans (Romans 10:13). What a tremendous promise! Jesus gave His life on Calvary's Cross so that we all might know the love of God and have eternal life in His name.

Yet this blessed assurance of salvation is connected directly to the outpouring of God's Spirit on all flesh from Joel 2. Like salvation, the promise of the Holy Spirit and His Power is for everyone who believes! Just as is in our common salvation, it is for the young and old, the learned and the simple, men and women, bond and free. Whosoever comes, they are all welcome to the table of divine grace. So, all who come may be filled with the relational power of God's forever-abiding presence. (John 14:15-18)

All we have to do is ask. Jesus said in the context of teaching on prayer, "If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" (Luke 11:11-13)

After being with the disciples for over a month post-resurrection, Jesus taught them about the kingdom of God. He also tells them to go back to Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit. Then He ascends back to the spiritual realm.

Why are they to wait? The promise of the Spirit is the relational power of God in the life of the believers to fulfill our kingdom responsibilities there on earth. Paul reminds us, "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself. (Php 3:20–21)

This Pentecost is a turning point in human history! The God of the universe has come to dwell, tabernacle, within us as loyal followers of Jesus. But this event is unique to all of human history as it is also the Church's birth and the New Testament's beginning. It is also so well timed that the message of the Gospel and this fantastic moment are carried back into the communities of faith around the ancient world.
