Have you ever made a horrible judgment call or decision because you feared the outcome or the people you were around? Peer pressure can be heavy. I wish I could say that I have never given in, but I have. Occasionally, I still get upset with myself, allowing my fear to drive me into foolish behavior. God help us all in this. Remember, we have nothing we should fear in this life, not even death itself (See Romans 8:35-39). Why? Because the King and creator of all creation profoundly loves us all. 

However, we should all have a healthy fear of God. We are to fear the one who has the power of judgment over our eternal destiny. (Luke 12:4-5; Mark 10:28) We are not to fear man. It can help to never forget, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (Ephesian 6:12). The fear of man should not drive our actions. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)

The religious leaders and the rulers of Jesus' day were often moved by their fear of human reprisal. It is one thing to see the flagrant violation of justice in the Jewish secret meetings that condemned Jesus, but then to see the blatant violation of justice in the Roman trials is outrageous. The Roman representative sentenced the innocent Jesus to death because he feared political reprisals. All because of fear. What are we afraid of? What influence our life and our decisions? I hope and pray it is the love and God and the love of others. Do what is right, trust God for the outcome, and come to our defense.

Have you ever experienced injustice? Me too! I have been judged for things I have never done except in the vain imagination of the ungodly and unjust person. There are sad times when we suffer cruelty at the hands of those who call themself followers of Jesus. Of course, we will all see who they are in the end, right? But only God knows. Through all life's hardships, God is faithful to be our refuge, reward, and all-powerful defender and deliverer. 

God is not blind to the depravity that sin has brought upon humanity's wicked hearts and broken minds and the unregenerate, a special kind of wicked that drives their desires for power and possessions. Jesus suffered a great injustice at the hands of these kinds of men. He suffered in obedience to the Father's will unto the death on the cross for you and I. (see Philippines 2:8-10). He knows our pain and suffering, for He willingly chose to experience it on our behalf. Everything Jesus went through, we deserved. 

Hebrews says, "For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us, therefore, come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."(Hebrews 4:15-16) Now a love for this world or a passion for the pleasures of sin can also sway the most diligent followers of Jesus if they are not aware of the cunning deception of the Devil. In other words, sin makes us stupid. 

Yes, the world is full of unjust, power-craving people that will do the vilest things to maintain their ill-gotten authority. God sees, and He will rightly judge them all in the end. (Revelation 10:11ff)

Watching someone walk away from their faith is heartbreaking and confusing. Most of us have seen it. Now I am not talking about someone who floats from church to church. I am talking about someone who has "denied" the faith and turned from Jesus. We often wonder why? Could we have done something to help them, or did we do something to drive them away?

Of course, the question arises, "Did they lose their salvation?" That is a long conversation for another day, but only God knows. John the beloved, the apostle writes about the coming deception, "Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us." (1 John 2:18–19) This verse sounds more like Judas in the end than our broken brother Peter. Peter became crushed by his fear and failed to live up to his zeal. (2 Timothy 1:7)

When you and I fail, we have the open door, and I might add responsibility to own up to our failure before God and men, return to the Lord, and seek to restore relationships with others that we have hurt through our actions, words, or inaction. In other words, we are to strengthen the brethren (2 Corinthians 1:4; 5:17-21), But the beauty of God's grace is that when we are faithless, He remains ever faithful. Consider Titus 2:10–13 "Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.”

No one has, or should say, that following Jesus is easy. It is not. Yet, it is worth every crazy, tragic, wonderful, and difficult moment. Jesus said, "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. (Matthew 7:13–14) Paul also writes, "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (the difficult way) are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (Romans 8:18) How our present circumstances look to us is not how things look to God. 

Where we see suffering and tragedy, He sees our future hope. (Jeremiah 29:11; Romans 8:28) Where we see a betrayal of Jesus, God sees His will unfolding that was planned from before time began. (Ephesians 1:3–6; Jeremiah 1:5; Psalm 139:13-18) When we see the kiss of death from Judas, God knows it is the kiss that will lead to eternal life and the redemption of all creation. The Father is allowing the death of the Son. The Son is submitting to the will of the Father in order to bring about salvation for all, for this is the will of God. Peter says, "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (Peter 3:9) Therefore, He permits even the betrayal, suffering, and ultimate death of His only begotten Son. (John 3:16) Why? Because of His love for you. Jesus would have still come to your rescue if you were the only one on earth.

We must all face the final curtain. That curtain is death. Death is associated with burial. Genesis’ closing chapters pull the final curtain on Jacob and Joseph. Did the father and son finish well? They both had struggles in life. The family was dysfunctional to say the least. But how does it end? Is death really the final curtain? Is there more to come?
