Luke 21:9-19. In the study of God's Word, we come across what we may call prophetic and/or apocalyptic writings. We also need to take a beat and remember that some prophetic passages have been fulfilled. Israel and Judah going into captivity is a good example. Some may also have what is known as a dual fulfillment of the past and future. Some are yet future events that will be coming to a community near you soon. If God had given His Word, He is guaranteed to keep it. That is a guarantee. The study of prophecy can seem overwhelming, with many differing views of future events. You could say that studying prophetic passages is like studying the weather; you can say it is going to rain, but unless you are outside and wet, it is simply our best guess. Remember, Jesus said, "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. (Matthew 24:36) Peter writes, "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up." (2 Peter 3:10) Paul also says, "But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, "Peace and safety!" then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. (1 Thessalonians 5:1–3) Yet, prophecy is one of the greatest apologetics, reason, or defense of the truth of God we have in the Bible found in the Bible. God tells us the end from the beginning. Only He can do that. This also shows us that God is actively involved in the affairs and past, present, and future of His creations in order to bring about reconciliation and peace. We do not and cannot know the day, but we can know the God who knows our days. "Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them. (Psalm 139:16; also see Job 14:5)
