What makes a Christian a Christian? Is it doing good for others? Or is it a knowledge of Jesus and the stories of the Bible? Or maybe it's the experience of saying a prayer asking Jesus into our heart and "gettting saved?" But at the end of the day, each of us can probably think of a person who doesn't believe in God who still tries to do good works for others, or somebody who knows the Bible well but doesn't actually have a relationship with Jesus, or somebody who responded to an altar call only to go back to their sinful way of life. So if those actions don't define a Christain, what does?

Like many people, I've enjoyed watching snip-its of the Olympics these past few weeks. During the Olympics, a lot of people take interests in obscure sports -- events that, under normal circumstance, would never make prime-time TV. One of those events is Team Rowing. As I was cheering madly for the American women's team, I noticed that there was one person in the boat who didn't row. She sat at the back of the boat, faced her team, and screamed at them. The official rowing term for this person is a "Coxswain." Her job is to keep the team together. She sets the pace of the boat. She adjusts their rowing technique. She instructs individual rowers. She directs the way they perform. She brings out the best in them. As a result, the team does well. Did you know, that as a follower of Jesus Christ, you have a coxswain in your life? There is someone who speaks instructions into your life. According to Titus 2:11-15, the coxswain of our lives is the gospel. The good news of Jesus actually teaches us how to live. The gospel is continually changing us. The gospel brings out God's beauty in us. Listen to continue our discussion about the beautiful gospel. Occasionally, my older girls and I have a daddy-daughter date night. These times are always great times. Now, you must understand, I think Kaelyn and Anna are two of the most beautiful girls in the world. (They take after their mother...a fact for which we are all extremely grateful.) They are naturally beautiful. But, when we are on daddy-daughter-date-night, there is also a sense in which I make them beautiful. When I treat them like ladies, when I pour a father's love into them, when buy them that extra something special, I watch a transformation in their faces. Their natural beauty shines brighter because I, as the one who loves them, am making them beautiful. Anyone who sees us on daddy-daughter date night knows that this is true. I wonder if there is a way that followers of Christ can do that same thing with the Gospel? The good news of Jesus is a beautiful message. But is there a way that followers of Christ can make the natural beauty of the Gospel shine more brightly? As we live as Christians in a godless world, Paul tells all of us (through his letter to Titus) that we can have a hand in making the gospel look attractive.

Given the evil that's all around us, purity sometimes seems impossible. But, for Christians, purity is achieved - not through good behavior or ritual purification, but through Christ alone. Leadership. It is a word that, when uttered, creates images in our minds of what leadership is and what it looks like. A lot of times, we associate the word with people we have either known or read about. The world needs leaders. God intended for there to be people who lead others. His intention was, of course, that leaders would submit to Him. And the church, even more so, needs leaders who submit to God. Paul's list to Titus discusses what to look for in a godly leader. Paul's list is surprisingly short. Yet, it is very instructive. In this message we delve into how we should go about choosing biblical church leadership.
