    In this episode of WaveCast, host Eugenie interviews Dr. Maxime Geoffroy, a Marine Institute research scientist who recently completed a 50-day, 2000-kilometer kayaking expedition in the Canadian Arctic. Dr. Geoffroy, an expert in bioacoustics, marine ecology, and biological oceanography, has dedicated much of his career to studying the Arctic. In this episode, Dr. Geoffroy shares his passion for studying the Arctic's unique ecosystems.

    Listeners will get an inside look at how Dr. Geoffroy embarked on this ambitious journey and the challenges he faced while kayaking through some of the harshest environments on Earth. Tune in as he discusses what inspired him to pursue research in the Arctic, how he prepared for this epic journey, and the unforgettable experiences he had while navigating one of the planet's most remote regions.

    Welcome back to WaveCast, the official podcast of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University. In this exciting season finale, listeners will experience technical session through the student perspective!

  • Tidepool Mini Episode | Innovative Conferences in Spring 2024

    In this Tidepool mini episode, host Eugenie Jacobsen dives into two innovative conferences set to make waves in St. John's, Newfoundland, this spring. 

    Eugenie chats with Dr. Paul Winger, the Director of the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR), who shares all the details about the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) / UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Fishing Technology and Fish Behavior Conference. The conference will bring together global leaders in sustainable fishing technology and provides opportunities for knowledge sharing in academic and government researchers and local/regional industry, including ocean instrumentation, gear manufacturing, and supply services.   

    Next, Eugenie is joined by Chris Arns, Council of Marine Professionals Project Manager, and Captain Charlene Munden of Algoma Central Corporation, to talk about the Mari-Tech Conference and Exhibition in May. Chris also highlights COMPASS' Elevate, Empower, Employ project, a marine and ocean career exploration program geared towards getting women aged 18-24 involved in the marine industry. Captain Charlene Munden shares her expierences as a women in the marine industry and gives important advice for students and women entering the workforce.

  • Tidepool Mini Episode | Sea Turtles, Coastal Conservation, and Studying Abroad | Marine Environmental Students in Grenada
    In this week’s episode of WaveCast, join us on a journey to St. George's, Grenada, where two passionate marine environmental students, Kailey Strickland and Mackenzie Curtis, share their exciting experience through the Global Skills Opportunity program.
     
     
    Over the course of a week, they dive into coastal conservation efforts, focusing on the shores of La Sagesse Beach and collaborating with T. A. Marryshow Community College.   • Diving into Discovery | How the Galapagos is hotspot for biodiversity and a ‘hopespot’ for deep sea corals | S1, EP07

    In today's episode of WaveCast, host Eugenie Jacobsen sails to the Galapagos Islands to talk with PhD student Ana-Belén Yánez Suárez on her research with deep sea coral. 

    Ana-Belén Yánez Suárez is a deep-sea ecologist and third-year PhD student in Fisheries Science at the Marine Institute. She led the biological collection on Dr. Katleen Robert's research cruise in the Galapagos Islands and led the cruise to La Isla del Coco in Costa Rica supported by the Schmidt Ocean Institute and National Geographic. In this episode, Ana-Belén shares her path to studying deep-sea coral at the Marine Institute, and delves into her current research in the Galapagos.
