Embarking on the journey to becoming a naturopathic doctor is exciting, challenging, and deeply rewarding. Born and raised in Colorado, Mariah’s love for medicine grew from watching her mother and grandfather, both healthcare providers for war veterans, selflessly help others. Mariah completed her basic science training and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre (her first love) from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. Mariah then pursued her master’s degree in Holistic Health Studies from St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota. It was through her master’s program that she was introduced to naturopathic medicine. Now, Mariah is a third-year medical student at the Sonoran University School of Naturopathic Medicine, and her areas of interest are acupuncture, botanical medicine, gastrointestinal conditions, oncology, and pediatrics. Mariah serves as president of the class of 2026, biochemistry and milestone exam tutor, physical medicine TA, and social media chair of the botanical medicine club. Outside of school, Mariah enjoys grounding in the Arizona nature with her partner and two dogs.

Today is my most personal episode yet! The journey of becoming a mom has been anything but straightforward for this girl. Since I turned 30 (I am 34) I have had repeated labs, endless needle sticks, and the same news from 4 fertility doctors in 3 states. "You have a low AMH level, which doesn't make you a candidate for egg freezing and if you do want to get pregnant you should try today (this was 4 years ago) because the chances of you conceiving are already slim to none..."  That constant disappointment did everything but discourage me for very long, I fully trusted in God and the timing of my life. Fast forward to today and I HAVE THE BEST NEWS to SHARE WITH YOU TODAY! WE ARE PREGNANT!!!!!! Let's explore this new chapter of motherhood together!

There are so many ways in which we define ourselves. We may describe ourselves as emotions, our professions, our titles, our incomes, our roles, our behaviors, our possessions, our spiritual beliefs, our accomplishments or our past. We often look at our life situation, our friend group, or our circumstances to define who we are. In reality, all of these are temporary, the only constant in life is change. So if we continually define ourselves based on the past and the future then how will we ever know who we are TODAY? We are not our bodies, nor our behaviors and today we deep dive into redefining ourselves, feeling confident, and expanding our view of who we are, making certain that our labels are enhancements, not limitations.

How often have you done something and thought, gosh, I'll never make that mistake again? Then weeks, months, and years pass, and come to find out you've unconsciously been repeating old behaviors your entire life. The truth is, we rely on experience to be the best teacher when in reality, the only teacher is EVALUATED experience. Reflection turns experience into insight! When is the last time you found a quiet place to journal and reflect on your day? This could occur after some big event, a fight with your spouse or even regarding questions you have for some higher power. The answer is probably, Shauna, I don't have time.
