In Memory of Patsy M. Genz 1948-2020

This is a special replay of Episode 51 in honor of the life of Patsy Genz.

Anyone who ice fishes has heard of Dave Genz. Dave is called the godfather of ice fishing and has revolutionized the sport. Many people don’t realize that behind the scenes was his wife Patsy and daughters, Missy and Kathy. From actually sewing the shacks, to wrapping hooks with lead and packaging maggots to be shipped around the country those three women were and are an important part of this legacy. Missy and Kathy said they didn’t grow up fishing, they grew up catching! Listen in as we talk to the three of them around their kitchen table, and find out the rest of the story.

Ariel has been living off grid in a tiny house nestled into the western mountains of Wyoming, a little over 6000 feet above sea level for six years now. She splits her own wood for heat, carries water by hand, uses a composting toilet, and attempts to grow as much of her own food as possible between the weather and wildlife she's surrounded by.

As a child, she was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of her free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that she older. She moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoys spending her time outside hiking, gardening, and photographing the natural world.

As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family Ariel had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. She's enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging, to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows.

Mostly, she enjoys doing the kinds of things that try to provide a real service or value to others. Some of her other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, skiing, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to close friends.

Jordan Jonas was a cast member of the History Channel Show, Alone.  The show sent a group of survivalists to the Arctic to compete for $500,000 in a last man (or woman) standing competition.  Jordan outlasted everyone by making it 77 days.  He killed a Moose with a bow on the show as well as catching many fish.  He battled wolverines and the cold to make it to the end.

Jordan and I discuss his experience as a Reindeer herder, hopping trains and traveling the country and spending quite a bit of time in Russia.  All of these experiences helped him to acquire the skills to win Season 6 of Alone.

Check Jordan out on social: @hobojordan

Do a survival school with Jordan; "My goal is to impart the necessary skillset, knowledge and confidence to give anyone that goes through the course the best possible chance of thriving in the wilderness, should the need or desire arise."
