  • The Woman Angler & Adventurer | Fueling Your Passion for the Outdoors! : EP. 37 Finding Love in Life and for the Outdoors in Devils Lake North Dakota

    Unlike a lot of women who have a passion for hunting and fishing, Jade Ledochowski didn't grow up in a family that participated in those types of activities. Born and raised near Lake Winnipeg, her family was preoccupied with various sports such as hockey and baseball. It wasn't until she went off to college and met her boyfriend Garrett Bonham that she stepped outside of her comfort zone and now she's all in!

    Garrett is a fishing guide in Devils Lake North Dakota. I had the pleasure of fishing with Garrett back in September and it was a blast. I really enjoyed learning about the history of that lake and most of all- catching a lot of walleye! I highly recommend checking out Devils Lake if you ever get the chance.   • Tom Rowland Podcast : #0044 - Taylor Somerville - Breathing Into A New Life

    I came across a method of breathing 4 years ago. It is called the Wim Hof method, and if you ever get to hear Wim Hof talk about breathing he kind of sounds like a crazy person. But the more you look into it you find that everything he does is backed by scientific research. 

    He has learned a way to effect his autonomic immune system and one time was injected with E.coli and was able to prevent being ill by his breathing. 

    I have been doing this breathing method for about 4 years, my wife and a lot of my friends think it is very weird. But it has been incredible for me and I began to look into other breathing methods, and that brings us to this podcast today. 

    I found that I have lots in common with Taylor Somerville and we began to connect about Duck Key and that we both went to Alabama for school. I hope you enjoy this podcast today.

  • Tom Rowland Podcast : HOW 2 TUESDAY #21 - The Ring Game

    While my kids were growing up, we had a canal in our backyard and would play the Ring Game. As a fisherman, this is a great activity to reinforce my kids’ interest in fishing, but also I get to share one of my favorite hobbies with them. Though we had a canal, this game can be played in a pool, lake, or anywhere with water access. The Ring Game not only teaches kids how to cast their line, but is also a way to progress their skills, so they’re able to start catching fish on the flats.

    For this game, I personally use a spinning rod, but any rod will work for this as well. I then have my son cast his line out (using his kid SpongeBob rod) into the water with a weight or jig attached to the end; the weight will then create a ring in the water. Now, for my turn, it is up to me to cast my line into the center of that ring before the ripple disappears. This teaches your kids how to read the water, and to become more familiar with the rod. With more and more practice, my kids were then asking to switch places with me, so I would cast the line, and they would aim for the center of my ring in the water. In turn, this improves their accuracy, speed, and becoming a better caster.

    The Ring Game is probably one of the best drill games for young kids, as it instills the motto, “practice makes perfect”. With my sons, this game later helped with their practicing skills in different aspects of their life, from wrestling practices to homework. As for my kids, “they now know that they became very good at something, and now they can become good at anything.”

    As mentioned before, this type of game can be altered with any body of water or fishing rod. Last time on the show, Gene “The Flukemaster” Jensen, uses an idea similar to mine: he casts a line with a small weight attached at the end, and aims for the inside of a five gallon bucket of water. However you play, it is guaranteed your whole family will find these accuracy games fun and entertaining.

The decoys are works of art and are designed to swim with specific movements in the water. The decoys are beautifully painted.   • Tom Rowland Podcast : #0043 - Brendan Smith & Turner Rowland - The Men In The Arena

    I had the honor of recording this podcast in Bozeman, Montana with my son, Turner Rowland, and his roommate, Brendan Smith. Turner and Brendan both moved to Bozeman after graduating High School in pursuit of their love for hunting and fishing.

    Recently, Turner just finished his first season as an elk hunting guide. For training, Turner started in September this year, and over the course of a month, spent two weeks bow hunting, and then two weeks of rifle hunting. Turner is out at camp base six days a week, and loves every minute of it. He developed an interest in hunting at an early age, and after seeing some elk videos in the mountains, Turner knew he wanted to be a guide.

    So I had to ask, “How did you find this opportunity and make it a reality?”

    Turner responded that after taking a semester off from college, he knew that he still wanted to follow his dream of becoming a guide. While there were some guide schools available, Turner decided he wanted to be immediately submersed in the guiding business, rather than going to school for it. He contacted outfitters from different states and even Alberta, and found an outfitter that would let him use his horse experience to be a wrangler in exchange for interning as a guide. He continued to search for the right opportunity by acting on some advice that I gave him. He wrote 7 letters a week to outfitters, guides, and whoever else he could make contact and eventually opportunities began to emerge. Afterwards, with recommendations and some experience, Turner finally became an elk guide just north of Bozeman for Sage Peak Outfitters.

    As a follow up question, I asked, “What did you learn and take away from this experience?”

    Turner replied that patience and persistence is a key factor in becoming a successful elk guide. He says that being out in the mountains have allowed him to be in tune with the weather, wind patterns, and movement of the Elk.

    On this trip, I was able to go on an elk hunt with Turner as my guide, and seeing him so happy and right where he is meant to be was an experience unlike anything else.

    Afterwards, I turned to Turner’s roommate and good friend, Brendan Smith, who is an avid fisherman and currently a student at Montana State University. Brendan choose Montana State University because he has easy access to fishing and skiing, and said he felt the most at home in Bozeman. Brendan is currently studying computer science with a minor in music, and plans to work with artificial intelligence. With computer science, Brendan is able to work for a numerous amount of companies and can work from anywhere in the World. One thing Brendan fears the most is the progression of being disconnected with nature, since people are more likely to be attached to their phones and computers. However, with his major, he is able to appreciate the time he has outdoors, completely surrounded by nature.

    Next semester, Brendan will be traveling to New Zealand to study abroad, and is eager to spend his time exploring and fishing in this scenic country.

    We finished the podcast with one of my very favorite quotes. This quote came to mind because both Brendan and Turner are doing something different from the norm and get questions or criticism from others, additionally, they may even question their own decisions to venture into a life with no real road map. I shared my favorite quote by Theodore Roosevelt with them:

    "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."
