As a guide in both fresh and saltwater, Tom Rowland discusses the questions you should ask your guide to make sure you get exactly the trip you are looking for.
1. Be Direct - Talk to the guide about what you would really like. Do you want to catch a lot of fish and don't really care which species? Is there one fish you particularly want? Are you looking for a particular size fish? Do you have a kid that wants the rod bent all day?
2. Be honest - Give your guide an accurate assessment of your skill level. Are you an expert? Novice? Brand New? Talk to the guide and let them know where you stand so they can suggest the best time to come or offer other alternatives.
3. Be Open - Be flexible and open to other times of year, other locations or other guides. Once you talk about what you want, the guide can either take you himself or offer a suggestion for what you have stated that you wanted.
4. Make Sure You Understand What is Required From What You Are Asking. - Talk to the guide and understand what goes into the request you made. Did you want to catch a permit on fly? Do you understand that catching 1 is excellent and many anglers only catch one per season or one in a lifetime? Just make sure you understand that you may be going all day without catching something if that is the kind of fishing you want to do.
I hope these tips help you to book the trip you want. I know that asking these type of questions helped me to have very happy customers and that is the key to a very successful fishing guide. You can use these same type of questions as an angler to get the trip you want.

Capt. Robert “RT” Trosset is a light tackle fishing guide based out of Key West, Florida. Born and raised in East Central Florida and moving to Key West in 1974, Trosset quickly found a following among hardcore light tackle anglers in the Miami Beach Rod and Reel Club, as well as serious world-record chasers. To date, he’s led anglers to 238 IGFA records on light-tackle and fly. RT was the first guide to lead anglers to over 100 records and has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Gamefish Association (IGFA).
RT came to Key West in 1974 and began working at Kings Point Marina. Bob Montgomery helped Trosset begin his career and soon he was guiding alongside legendary guides like Jose Wejebe, Ralph Delph, Ken Harris and Bruce Cronin.
While the fishing in Key West can occupy a lifetime, RT has also traveled extensively throughout the world for a host of species. If any offshore guide has done it all, it could be argued that RT is the guy who has come closest to that distinction.
Tom Rowland caught up with RT Trosset and talked World Records, Hunting, Family and what gets his blood flowing these days.
Deck of Cards:
Travel can wreck the best intentions for fitness goals. Whether it is a vacation, a business trip, a fishing tournament or an adventure to a primitive location, having an irregular schedule and no access to a gym can cause some to really go off the rails.
I was certainly having these same problems as I was traveling for Redfish Tournaments many years ago and it really caused me a lot of frustration as the progress I had made would slip away every time I traveled.
I learned a quick and easy workout that required zero equipment and I could do it anywhere. For more than 20 years I have been hitting this workout on the road and it has kept me on track during the times away from my group and regular schedule.
You will only need 1 thing to complete this and if you forget it, it will be available in any convenience store, at your hotel kiosk, or at any airport. This is a simple deck of playing cards.
Here is how it works:
Deck of cards workoutSimply get a deck of cards (I never travel without one) and shuffle.
Designate an exercise to each suit, flip cards and get moving.
My go to travel deck of cards is this:
If you are on the road for a while and feeling guilty about missing your gym time, throw every key card from your trip into the deck as well and use them as additional Jokers. It gets progressively tougher every day.
Another version:
You can make this as tough as you want to and there are endless combinations. Even if you do the same combination every day, simply shuffling the cards makes it different every time.
If you are feeling extra tough, do a double deck of cards.
There is no excuse for not staying in shape on the road.
Send me an email at [email protected]and let me know your favorite combination of exercises for the deck of cards workout.

Here is the good news: all 5 are mostly avoidable and with a few things in your kit bag, the rest can be handled in primitive environments.
