A single question often lingers throughout any design process: will it work? Often, the short answer is simply – "No." The long answer? "Noooo!" Dissatisfied, we ponder potential improvements in a search for groundbreaking solutions. We turn to bold overarching schemes, 5-year strategies, time-consuming workshops, sprawling customer journey maps or the obvious almighty cure-all of "Do your research!"... but perhaps the answer is so simple it seems insignificant.

At its core, the design of any product can be broken down into individual interactions between it and the user. This decision-based relationship presents a blank canvas filled with small opportunities, where every single moment can be make-or-break for the user. What does that mean in practice? Well, let's just catch up on the WaysConf to explore why, when designing experiences, you should focus on crafting individual moments that captivate users and shape their behaviors!

Between the lines of stakeholders: maintaining a great relationship resulting in outcomes and opportunities.

Communicating and trust building between the designer and stakeholders is crucial for bringing great value to the digital product. If you have it, impossible becomes possible. I'd like to discuss how to maintain the awesome relationship between designer and stakeholder(s), as well as share the most important rules of thumb on research, formulating hypotheses, interviewing people, and validating your design decisions while building agreements between the two parties along the way.

Abstract:

Simple sites can enjoy simple architectures and hosting strategies. But what happens when we need to offer more complex, dynamic experiences to our users? Or when we need to offer localisation or personalisation? Things can get difficult when we need to build and serve these sites with confidence.

Modern rendering models and workflows make this far more approachable than before. And technologies like Edge Functions allow us to enrich our sites with more advanced features for our users.

In this talk we’ll learn about popular approaches to rendering our sites, and see how we can choose between them. And we’ll explore a practical example using Edge Functions to deliver personalised experiences to our users without compromising on performance or robustness.

Google is blind. It doesn't see beautiful layouts, engaging carousels, attractive illustrations, and photos. The same is true for many other users who visit our site and may not necessarily rely on the culturally dominant sense of sight. The use of storytelling principles in coding comes to the rescue, changing the optics from visual coding to linear coding arranged logically. By asking questions about whether the structure of our website tells a logical story, whether its content carries meaning and function, and whether the reader of this story can easily navigate through it by finding strategic elements, we are able not only to create well-functioning websites, which the blind Google and its crawlers will visit and rate higher in the SEO ranking. Above all, we will reach all Internet users who sit down to the coded reading with the satisfaction that someone has prepared a user-friendly website written like an engaging story.

Never urgent, rarely important: how to find and elevate the value of visual (UI) design for different types of project.

Consult The Eisenhower Matrix, and most visual (UI) design tasks will fall under the delete (distraction and unnecessary) quadrant. Ask your product manager if you can work on improving the curvatures of the icon set you are using, and observe closely. Visual (UI) design is the thing that attracts people's attention; although it is genuinely the least important aspect of product design, delivering work related to visual improvements is usually pushed down. How to navigate the paradox of this situation? How to show the hidden value of the visual (UI) design, and when to let go? This talk is about being more strategic about the craft of pushing pixels and micro-interactions.
