The fundamental story of the Bible is not, as it might seem in today’s reading, about judgment and punishment for transgressions, but the story of perfect love and overwhelming grace. So often, when reading God’s Word, passages like this call us to confront the depravity of our natures—looking into the mirror of who we are in the light of God’s perfection—and acknowledge our inability to measure up. It is only then that we can truly accept grace.

Luke gives us a perspective of the Last Supper that is a bit different from the other Gospel writers. He focuses on the disciples' complete inability to understand what Jesus is saying and their overconfidence in themselves. The lesson that Jesus was teaching us it that without Him, we can do nothing. A deeper look at His words show us He knew exactly what was to take place over that night and the next day.

In our journey through the Gospel of Luke we've come to the betrayal and last supper. Luke's account has a few unique additions that are not in the other Gospels. Jesus explained the meaning of the supper and adds a promise that should thrill our souls.

We continue this week with Jesus' prediction of what was soon to happen and what would happen before His return. He not only gave us things to watch for, but He also told us what our attitude should be.

There are those who teach that if we are obedient to the Lord and give generously to Him, He will bless us with an abundance of wealth, health, and peace. But what did Jesus teach His disciples about their future and that of future disciples. In our passage for today He lays out a number of predictions that have proven true ever since His ascension. He also tells us how we are to face those conditions.

We are finally opening up from our long period of lock down when the murder of George Floyd took place. The marches and riots that followed with demands of de-funding police departments set the country on edge. What can bring us together? Are there any examples of overcoming differences in the past that would help us today? There is a solution!

As Jesus wound down His teaching in the temple, He observed a widow giving two tiny coins. Why was Jesus so impressed and what does it tell us about how God sees things? Then before leaving the temple He as much as sealed His fate by rebuking the hypocrisy of the religious leaders within the sound of His voice. While the people honored them to the extreme, Jesus exposed their worst hypocritical actions. Two examples are set before us to consider how we appear to God.

The religious leaders had some gotcha questions to try to incriminate Jesus. Jesus doesn't just answer off the top of His head. He gets to the real issue underlying their question. It's an issue we must all consider. In the process, the leaders found they were the ones who were trapped.

Once Jesus had taken over the temple, the Jewish leaders demanded to know where He got His authority. First He stumped them with a question that revealed to the people where those leader's hearts were. Then, He told a prophetic parable that upset not only the leaders, but the rest of the people in the audience as well.
