A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION

“A Plan for Success”

Scripture Reference: Proverbs 16:1-3

Introduction: The term “New Year’s Resolution” refers to: 

v.1 The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord.

Commentary: This verse reveals two distinct contrasts “the plans of man” and the “reply of the tongue” are contrast with each other. In other words, man may plan his thoughts in advanceto execute them, but the Lord is sovereign and may overrule man’s plans to accomplish His purpose and will for man’s life. We should always invite God to help us with our plans of the heart, thoughts. We do not know everything, but God does know the things that we do not know. We need His help or assistance to lead and guide usto what His will is for our lives.

1. A commitment with intentional change based on what has been learned through past experiences, practices, and procedures.2. The diminishing of an unreasonable reality by giving contemplation to one’s inability to move forward in the quality of life.3. A psychological assessment that results in a deliberate act to resolve and commit to a life that is more fulfilling and rewarding.• Preparations – the act or process of making something ready or getting ready.• Heart in man – refers to the inner or central desires, aspirations, or longings.• Answer of the tongue – refers to the conclusion or manifested outcome.• From the Lord – refers to God’s sovereign will and purpose of our lives.

The True Meaning of Christmas

“Glorifying and Praising God”

Scripture Reference: Luke 2:15-20

v.15 And it came to pass as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, let us now go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass which the Lord has made known unto us.

• The angels were gone – implies that the angels shared the message and left.

• Let us now go and see – speaks to the level of urgency in viewing what they’ve been told.

• Which is come to pass – speaks to the level of their faith in believing that what they heard had already happened.

• The Lord has made known unto us – speaks to what has been exclusively made known to them (i.e., the shepherds).

v.16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

• They came with haste – refers to their level of enthusiasm and excitement. In that the shepherds hurried, indicated the seriousness of the matter.

• And found Mary, Joseph, and the babe – speaks to the confirmation in what they were told is what has been realized. The test of their faith was their immediate response. The shepherds had obeyed the angel’s message with haste.

• Lying in a manger – refers the bread of heaven lying in a feeding trough. Yes, how appropriate it is for the true bread from heaven to be lying in a feeding trough for all mankind to eat from. Thus, Jesus has well said that He is the bread from heaven.

THE FOURTH ADVENT

“The Peace of the Gospel Message”

Introduction of the Advent

The word Advent means "coming" or "arrival." The word refers to the four-week period leading up to Christmas. Thus, in Christian theology the word refers to the coming or arrival of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Historically, the primary color of the Advent is Purplewhich is the color of penitence and fasting as well as the color of royalty to welcome the Advent of aKing. This concept points to the importance of the connection between Jesus’ birth and his death. Jesus’ incarnation cannot be separated from his crucifixion. The purpose of Jesus’ coming into the world was not only to reveal God’s grace to mankind through the life and teaching, but also through his suffering, death, and resurrection.

The advent is broken up into four weeks with each week representing a distinct focus or thought: Hope, Love, Joy, & Peace. The shift from purple to pink on the third Sunday advent candle emphases a turn from penitence to celebration within the season. The focus of the entire season is to commemorate the birth of Christ in his first coming and the anticipation of Christ in his return.

The fourth candle represents the Peace that the gospelmessage brings. This Peace surpasses all understanding (Phil. 4:7). Isaiah 9:6 identified Christ as the Prince of Peace. Isaiah’s prophecy looks forward to the Peace that Christ will establish during the millennial here on earth. Nevertheless, we know without any doubt that the Peace of Christ can be a reality in this present world now as well as that which is to come.

Historically, the primary color of the Advent is Purplewhich is the color of penitence and fasting as well as the color of royalty to welcome the Advent of aKing. This concept points to the importance of the connection between Jesus’ birth and his death. Jesus’ incarnation cannot be separated from his crucifixion. The purpose of Jesus’ coming into the world was not only to reveal God’s grace to mankind through the life and teaching, but also through his suffering, death, and resurrection.

The third candle represents the Joy of the message that the gospel brings. In the dispensation before the coming of Christ, the prophets looked forward to His coming in Joy. Now, because of the atoning work of Christ, we have Joy in our salvation from sin and death as we look forward to his return.
