  • Succession | Season 2 Finale Recap: “This is Not For Tears”
Succession | Season 2 Finale Recap: “This is Not For Tears

Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and Emily Fox (@emelette) were going to podcast about the Succession season two finale, “This is Not For Tears,” completely on their own — but in the last minute, they decided to flip the script and invite their cousin Ben, now operating under the name Bendall Roy.
In “This is Not For Tears,” the “blood sacrifice” stands revealed: Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong), second eldest son of Logan Roy (Brian Cox). But Kendall does not go quietly into the night; instead, he reveals himself as “a killer,” and reveals his father as “a malign presence” for all the world to see.
Kendall’s shocking reversal sets the stage for an even more turbulent third season, with several questions remaining about exactly how the next year of Succession takes shape. Was this Kendall lashing out against his father in a way Logan could finally respect? Was it all part of Logan’s master plan? Those questions and many more are weighed in the finale recap as Josh, Emily and Ben dig into feedback and their own theories about Logan’s smile, the Greg sprinkles, Tom and Shiv’s collapsing marriage and much more.
    About Succession …
Created by Jesse Armstrong for HBO, Succession focuses on the Roy family, rich and powerful monsters with their hands on the wheel of an enormous media empire. Logan Roy (Brian Cox) is the patriarch who built the empire, brick by brick, but in his aging and ailing state, it’s time for him to consider the line of succession. He has four children to choose from, all of whom are problematic for their own litany of reasons: Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Logan’s drug-addicted “number one boy”; Roman (Kieran Culkin), a jester in a power suit; Shiv (Sarah Snook), a political animal who is on the fringes of the family business; and Connor (Alan Ruck), the eldest sibling with no apparent appetite for the job. Dark horses like Tom Wamsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) are jockeying for the job, while inside-outsiders like Cousin Greg (Nicholas Bran) want nothing more than to scrape on by as best as they can. But of all the candidates to rule Waystar Royco, there is only one leading candidate in Logan’s decaying mind: himself.

Succession | Season 2, Episode 9 Recap: “DC”

You can’t make a Tomelette without breaking a few Gregs, and you can’t have a podcast about the Succession season two penultimate episode without Emily Fox (@emelette). After a week off, Emily is back on the podcast with Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) to take on “DC.”
In “DC,” the Roys go to Washington, and it does not go well. Logan (Brian Cox) barely keeps it together during the hearing about the cruise scandal, and leaves Kendall (Jeremy Strong) with the unenviable job of speaking on his father’s behalf. Meanwhile, Shiv (Sarah Snook) is called into action to save the company, and Roman (Kieran Culkin) is far away from the political action — but sadly, way too close to some literal action.

This week’s podcast sees Josh and Emily answering listener feedback and taking a look ahead at the season two finale with some predictions. What’s going to happen to the Roys? Who is “the blood sacrifice,” and what on Earth are we going to do if its Greg (Nicholas Braun)? Josh and Emily address all of that and more. Get your questions in for the season finale recap by using our Feedback form, or by sending us your comments and reactions on Twitter.

Succession | Season 2, Episode 8 Recap: “Dundee”

Surprise! Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) welcomes Domenick Abbate (@Domenick_Abbate) to the Succession podcast, for a trip down memory lane in “Dundee.”
In “Dundee,” Logan Roy (Brian Cox) comes home, in an example of art imitating life. (Both Roy and Cox were born and raised in the titular Dundee, Scotland.) It’s a bittersweet homecoming, with a strong emphasis on the bitter, as Logan becomes disenchanted with Rhea Jarrell (Holly Hunter), but not enough to block her ascension within the company. Meanwhile, even Shiv (Sarah Snook) comes around to the idea of Rhea running the ship, if only for now, and if only because a big storm is a-comin’. Then there’s the whole matter of Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) rapping in honor of his father. Try making it the rest of the week without “L to the OG” popping up in your brain.

Josh and Dom weigh in on all those subjects and more (and in this case, more means The Flamingo Kid with Fisher Stevens as well as Dom’s recent unfortunate encounter with an occasional friend of the podcast), with the help of listener feedback, which you can always submit on Twitter or using our feedback form. Emily Fox (@emelette) will return to the podcast in next week’s deep dive into the penultimate episode.
