What happens when the life you are living no longer matches the person you know you can become?
In this episode of Becoming Legendary, Ana Rita sits down with Dr. Amber Murphy, a former collegiate athlete, mother, entrepreneur and biomechanics specialist whose path into science did not follow the traditional route.
At 26, Amber had three children and no college degree. Years later, she would go on to earn multiple degrees, complete a PhD, and build a career in biomechanics and human performance — entering a field where women are still significantly underrepresented.
Today, through CompuSport, LLC, Amber works in biomechanics, sprint mechanics, injury prevention and athletic performance. Her work looks at the body not simply as something to train harder, but as a system that can be measured, understood and improved. She is also preparing a new book, The Science of Speed, designed to make sprint mechanics, injury prevention and talent identification more accessible to coaches and athletes.
But this conversation is about much more than sport.
Amber and Ana Rita talk about what it means to start again when your life does not look like the traditional image of success; returning to education later; motherhood and ambition; entering male-dominated environments; learning to trust your intelligence; and what happens when somebody decides that where they started will not determine where they finish.
They also explore the science behind performance:
What can biomechanics actually tell us about an athlete?
Why do some bodies move more efficiently than others?
Can injuries sometimes be predicted or prevented by looking at movement differently?
And how much talent is natural — versus something we can understand, develop and optimize?
Amber’s professional work through CompuSport includes biomechanics and athletic-performance analysis, and she has recently shared work involving track-and-field athletes and sprint-performance projects.
But perhaps the biggest question of this episode is simpler:
How many people never discover what they are capable of because they decide too early who they are supposed to be?
This is a conversation about science, yes.
But it is also about identity, reinvention, motherhood, courage and refusing to accept that your first chapter has to become your final one.
