(Don't panic ! this episode is not 3 hrs long - it is 1hr 34 but buzzsprout is having a bad day)
Crazy, driven, passionate, on the edge, methodical...these are just some of the words that the man himself would use to describe himself...
Meet Guillaume Arthus dreamer, planner, believer, deliverer, and one of the most extraordinary human beings in the Ultra running world. In this interview we hear Guillaume talk about his incredible experiences as he trains himself to take on his dream of running (self-supported) along the Via Alpina - the 2650km Alpine Arc that traverses the Alps from Slovenia to Monaco. To ready himself for this task he takes us on a colourful history of his physically and mentally demanding endurance "training" races from the UTMB and Escape from Meriden, to Last One Standing and the giant of all ultra races, the Barkley Marathons.
Guillaume is a big believer in planning, precision, trying and then trying again...however, he peppers his stories with some harrowing tales of disasters thrown at him in the mountains and how he dealt with them to overcome and carry on. We're pretty sure you'll be charmed by his inimitable style and his indomitable spirit, as we were, and we can't wait to see what he gets up to next...!
Buckle yourselves in for this one, it's a hell of a ride! Bon Courage!

Every runner (and certainly Meghan Trainor) knows about the importance of base training... or do they? Catch up with Andy and Jude as they talk about the importance of building a good aerobic base of fitness, the huge advantages it can bring not only to your running but also your wider life and why it is not all about slow running.
Join Laura James as she talks openly about her struggles with the eating disorders which have affected most of her adult life and how running has helped and hindered her recovery.
'it was there when I went to bed at night and when I got up in the morning.'
'it was like a constant scratch at the back of my head'
Laura sheds light on this complex mental health illness and how she now supports others.
Having taken up running age 30, Laura fell head over heels in love and ran her first marathon 11 months later and has since gone on to complete 4 of the 6 world major marathons. But as a huge fan of the trails too, she can often be found exploring the beautiful hills and views of the Peak District and is ready to dip her toes into ultra running. Her top tip 'just get off and do it'!
Andy and Jude talk virtual races, the joy of taking others with you on your adventures and how when it comes to fuelling, practise makes perfect.

There are not many silver linings to Covid, but one has to be the fact that so many people, both these new to running and those who have been around a block or 2 have discovered a love for running off road. In this episode we catch up with 2 of them and talk top tips for getting started.
Meet John, a solo road runner who normally finds himself plodding along something flat on his own to try and keep his health and fitness ticking over...that was, until he stumbled over his local trails. Surprising himself at just how much he's taken to his new-found love of trail running, listen to him share some of his stories of how he first got started, how he's progressed with varying skills from map reading to outdoing his son in the hills, and what he looks forward to post-pandemic (spoiler: it doesn't involve running along anything flat anymore!)
Andy and Jude talk through some tips on getting out on the trails for the first time, including breaking down some running fears and prejudices, advice on kit you do, and perhaps more importantly, don't actually need to get started!
Finally meet our parkrun tourism aficionado Lindsay, new to running in her 40's, yet in the last few years she visited over 10 countries and discovered the delights of running on her doorstep in Surrey to revelling in the lakes and forests of Russia and Sweden. Listen as she regales us with tales of meeting new people, experiencing locales she would never have dreamed of visiting, as well as tasting the local fika ("there's always got to be cake involved"!)

Ben Robertson is in many ways an ordinary man. He has had his ups and downs, his fair share of poor mental mental health, had relationships end and the usual job worries come his way. But he is also extraordinary.
In September 2018, Ben found himself waking up following a failed suicide attempt. Stress had overwhelmed and life had hit rock bottom. Having always found solace in getting out in the great outdoors, Ben turned once again to his love of the 'green time' to improve his mental health and importantly raise awareness for others. So whether it is running wearing head to toe Tesco bags, a Spiderman costume or lugging a huge tyre around on his back, Ben believes in the importance of getting people talking mental health.
Listen in as we catch up with Ben as he runs along one of his favourite paths in The Peak District and hear all about his latest challenge, 'Coals to Newcastle.'
carrying 25kg of coal,
124 miles,
3 days,
1 man,
from Hadfield, Derbyshire to Newcastle.
Raising money for leading mental health charity, MIND.
Hear how his experiences have shaped his challenges, how life is never smooth and how making your bed is his top tip for a good start to the day.
Ben's favourite mantras
" weekends = Time to make memories for Monday!"
"Mud washes off, grazed knees heal, but memories last!"

'The winter brings you but the summer keeps you', is a favourite phrase of those living in Chamonix, France.
And it is no different for the dynamic duo of Nikki Barnard and Sam Morton of The Adventure Running Company. An enthusiasm for the mountains, which led them to the Alps as ski bums, has turned into a long term love affair for the trails and inspiring others to have as much fun as they do.
Mountain leaders and trail coaches with some awesome races between them, listen in for tales of living in the foothills of UTMB, how to get your mate to wash your feet and what is is like to run up (and down) Kilimanjaro. Oh and plenty of talk of pizza and ice cream.
'If you really want to do something, no matter how big it is, there is a way.' - Nikki
'this huge spider totally stopped me dead in my tracks' - Nikki
'you run top to bottom of Killi - that's pretty flipping spectacular' - Sam
'its so easy for something to happen, the weather to come in' - Sam
'you can run the same route over and over and still be blown away by the views' - Sam

How do you train for some of the toughest trail events when your biggest hill is only 100m in elevation and where you live is only 9 miles by 5 miles. Meet Evan Laframboise and welcome to the beautiful island of Jersey. A place where navigation is as simple as keeping the sea on your right and where sunshine is the norm, taking on Lakes in a Day, Marathon Des Sables (to name a few), definitely pushed Evan to his limits and deepened his love for all things trail. Listen in for his story of highs, lows and how enjoyment can give you that extra buzz of performance on race day.
And if you are one for taking the odd photo or 100 while out on the trails, tune in to hear top tips from trail runner and photographer, Phil Hill of PH Balance. A fan of dragging his friends out for a sunrise run and the perfect social media savvy image, he has some great experience photographing big events as well as everyday adventures. After all, if there is no photo it didn't happen - right?
Not to mention the usual chatter from Andy and Jude as they talk FKTs and waterproof jackets.

This episode, we catch up with the Beauties and the Bog team, Corin, Lisa, Ali and Bodil and hear about how they found themselves beyond the city limits of Sheffield and head long into the world of fell running. Fuelled by friendship and a love of adventure they take on the High Peak Marathon, achieve success at the Dragon's Back and get off the beaten track in Albania.
Listen to the inspiring tales these 4 women tell and how getting out the door is the most important thing.
"I don’t know if you need a mad streak to enjoy fell running but...."
"As I was growing up I didn’t run as a child or even as a teenager really"
"What really drives me is having new experiences, and spending time in the hills with friends"
"spaghetti bolognese and take out pizza for later, because we were doing so many miles"
"The hardest part is getting out of the door and you can do anything for 10 minutes. So just get outside and trick your brain into thinking that you are only going to do it for 10 minutes"

Jude joins her with 3 miles to go and finds out how loneliness drove her on to push her limits and to discover the ultimate trail food, hot cross buns and peanut butter.
Out on the Lickey Hills of Birmingham, Trail Coach Andy Pye chases strava segments and tells us why urban fell running is the next best thing when you live in the city.
Join Jude and Andy for the usual trail tales and coaching top tips.

With Jude based in the Surrey Hills and Andy in The Peak District they chat about what it takes to tackle hills for a trail marathon, why trail running is way more than running and hear the powerful story of why Alice found refuge in the trails around Liverpool.
