From Corporate to Poet

This is a story about a young seventy years of age woman, who has moved on from the corporate world to an aspiring, acclaimed poet and author of poetry .  Rosalind Severin McClean has written three books of poetry and is on to her fourth.  Introducing OCEANS of THOUGHTS. Hailing from Dominica in the West Indies, studying at different business schools, owning her own modeling school, she has evolved into a striking woman of beauty, elegance and composure. Listening to her read OCEANS OF THOUGHTS poetry on her YouTube channel will leave you spellbound as she weaves images from a global perspective. Her poetry rings of the past, present and future, intended audiences young and old. These volumes belong on recommended reading lists, HBCU, Colleges and Universities.

When speaking to Ms. McClean, asking how she started writing poetry, she explained that she had been writing since a young girl, about six years of age. Her family thought she was looney because she would write strings of pretty words that to them made no sense!

Residing now in Queens, New York, she focuses on her mission to distribute these volumes into the education systems as poetry can inspire people of all walks of life. Her poetry inspires, challenges and and is thought provoking in many ways.

AT OUR AGE is a special podcast that I create to feature everyday people doing extraordinary projects, having a full lifestyle even in their seventies, eighties and beyond. People who are sixty-five and older are my focus on this special podcast. I highlight people who are active and adventurous:

John is the first being interviewed. He plays bacci, tennis, he is our master "composter" at our Gulfport Community Volunteer garden.  He does this and more with eleven grandchildren. Nice one minute interview and you'll never guess his age because he exudes youthful humor and energy.

The second interview is with George, our garden resurrectionist.. he rescued our Gulfport community garden that had been neglected.  He has been the "planting orchestrator" for over nine years.  Even more interesting is that he travels to the Western U.S. from May through mid October in his renovated "camper van" that has everything for comfort. He is a fun west coast swing dancer ( I knew him in NY and we had lots of fun dances together), he and his wife still venture to partner dances.  He has begun playing pickleball.

Stories:Baseball Stadiums and Romantic Places

Most of us know or have visited COOPERSTOWN, NY the Baseball Hall of Fame.  It is a great place to visit - off the beaten path but surrounded by lush hills and close enough to the Finger Lakes to enjoy NY wine country. I used to be a great batter in the batting cages.  The last time I was there all the balls came out at me at once.  I screamed like a girl.

An unusual historical baseball stadium is located there, DOUBLEDAY FIELD. This stadium has been there since 1920. Historically, the annual Hall of Fame Game was held there until 1908.

Also noteworthy, FENWAY PARK, located in Boston, home to the Boston Red Sox 1912.  Famous for its tallest stadium wall in the U.S, the GREEN MONSTER,  it's the original WALL.

Lastly, WRIGLEY FIELD, located in a neighborhood of Chicago and home to the Chicago Cubs.This location is surrounded by restaurants, bars and residences! The neighbors can watch the game right from their rooftops.

Athletes as role models, heroes, teachers

The athletes that I admire the most are the ones who posses HUMILITY.

Simone Biles, a designated GOAT ( Greatest of All Time) should not need an introduction.

Perhaps some of you don’t know that she was raised by exceptional foster parents.  She is a victorious survivor of abuse by her former OLYMPIC coach.

ROMANCE  and BASEBALL:  DREAMS Fulfilled

There are certain songs that take us back to our first love encounter, perhaps a summer love or even now if you are blessed with having that special person in your life...Music reminds us of many dreams, which we all want to be fulfilled.

Shohei, Taylor, Quantum Leaps: Baseball, Romance, Luck?

I don’t usually talk about celebs, however there is a correlation here that I want to make between Shohei, Taylor and Quantum Leaps.

Quantum Leaps, according to Price Pritchett lead to explosive results.

We all have the capacity for Quantum Leaps.  Pritchett tells us, “ we get in our way” of being open to them.

I am using these two celebs as examples because, while they are both young, they have already experienced difficult times, persevered, now laser focused to reach their penultimate.  Here are the takeaways: look at the five closest people you hang out with: are they people who you respect and can support each other in life’s path? Stop wasting time on social media, Netflix, etc: Dr.Pritchett tells us that we use only ten% of our potential and waste sixty hours a week on the above.  This summer do something that opens you up to  quantum leaps. Champagne, the king of wines in France,  is so  misunderstood by many Americans as they like to call anything that has “bubbles”, champagne.  I know this from my own experience of twenty-six years of selling French wine and other imports.

I don’t correct them but I can guide them to the ultra difference between Champagne and Prosecco, Cava, Cremants, and America 

To clarify, Champagne - true Champagne, not the California illegally labeled champagne,  can only be made in Champagne,  France. Champagne is a specific region with very strict laws governing varietal, aging and production. To call American bubbles,  Champagne is akin to calling all “sneakers” NIKE…

Champagne HOUSES, have a distinct style of their own: the blend of varietals is usually a combination of Chardonnay, Petit Meunier and Pinot Noir.  The HOUSE style never 

Never.  It is extremely difficult to produce the exact same flavor profile every year.

Champagne by law must be aged at least two years before it is sold publicly. Krug ages their wines for at least five years before their entry level wine is sold.  That is very expensive inventory.

The process of creating a House style is technically challenging as the first fermentation basically prepares the wine for the crucial disgorgement to add the “dosage.”

Think of this dosage as a “house secret sauce.”

The second fermentation rests and ferments while the Champagne master turns each bottle by hand a quarter of inch. This process is called “ riddling”.  It is labor intensive as each bottle is turned a quarter of an inch by hand. Up to 40,000 bottles a day is common and the  remueur, the riddler, is making certain that the dosage and yeasts are blended into the wine bottle.

Today, it is more common to see mechanization of this process by gyropalettes.

How does Romance begin?  And what does it have to do with Baseball? 

For one, don’t you think that Romance is akin to a foreign language?

I have been studying European Portuguese for over a year and it’s the  most difficult language that I am mastering: My French is fine, Italian so-so, Spanish ok… 

It is really difficult however, to hear this spoken language.  I believe that this need to understand the spoken language, is similar to understanding the language of ROMANCE.
