When we were children, all we could think about at Christmas was getting gifts. Of course there was always the usual: socks, underwear, a book, that knit sweater from Aunt Mabel… you know, things you needed.

Unwrapping those gifts was fun – until you saw what was inside them. Sometimes you would come down on Christmas morning to find an abundance of gifts under the tree. Unwrapping those was a lot more fun, because the odds were much higher that some of them would contain what you wanted.

And once in a while there was a really big gift, which was the ultimate, because a big gift is almost always something you want, not something you need.

This Christmas season, God has an abundance of gifts for you – big gifts like joy, love, peace, hope and faith. Gifts that are what we need, and ultimately what we want as well.

What are you full of?

The mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart. A good person brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil person brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. Matthew 12:34-35

Everyone has an abundance of something in them! The truth is, whatever we are full of is what will come out of us and we can give away only what we have.

Watch as we discover how we allow our abundance to overflow through prayer, our time, thoughtfulness of others’ needs, sacrificial giving and outreach.

If you drive along country roads you will see field after field of grain and corn and other crops. You may also drive past several places advertising various kinds of produce.

You may then go into a grocery store filled with seasonal items. While you will see that you are surrounded by abundance, keep in mind that being surrounded by abundance is not the same as experiencing abundance. It’s not about having everything you want or doing what you want – it’s something much more.

Think about time spent with your family, the blessing of good friendships, and the love and grace of a heavenly Father, and then you may realize that that is truly experiencing abundance.

We’re all thankful, but what does being thankful really look like? How can we “be” thankful?

Have you ever paused to ask yourself some of the deeper questions of life? You know, the ones that are harder to answer than “What’s your favourite kind of ice cream?” or “Where do you like to shop?”

Questions like “What are your dreams for the future? Why are you here? What is your purpose in life? What are you believing for, hoping for, maybe even praying for? What do you value? What do you hold to, stand by, stand for? To what would you give your time, your energy, your resources, yourself?”

These aren’t easy questions, and they don’t have easy answers. But ultimately they define us – who we are, what we do, why we do it, and what we are becoming.
