The Kind of Worshipers the Father Seeks
Psalm 100:1-5 (ESV)
Matthew 15:8-9 “‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.
“Worship is to honor with extravagant love and extreme submission.” Webster's Dictionary,1828
“Redemption is the means; worship is the goal. In one sense, worship is the whole point of everything. It is the purpose of history, the goal of the whole Christian story. Worship is not one segment of the Christian life among others. Worship is the entire Christian life, seen as a priestly offering to God. And when we meet together as a church, our time of worship is not merely a preliminary to something else; rather, it is the whole point of our existence as the body of Christ.” –John Frame
“Worship is our response, both personal and corporate, to God for who He is, and what He has done; expressed in and by the things we say and the way we live.” -- Louie Giglio
“Worship is ascribing honor, glory, and respect to God; treasuring Him above all things.” – Allen Bonnell
John 4:23 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.
Pslam 100:1-5 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!
2 Serve the LORD with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!
3 Know that the LORD, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;[a]
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!
5 For the LORD is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” Luke 19:40
1. Worship with awe.
Hebrews 12:28-29 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.
Psalm 95:6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!
2. Worship with abandon.
2 Samuel 6:14 14 And David danced before the LORD with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod.
2 Samuel 6:21-22 21 And David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince[a] over Israel, the people of the LORD—and I will celebrate before the LORD. 22 I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your[b] eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.”
3. Worship with intimacy.
Psalm 27:4 One thing have I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to inquire in his temple.
“Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Hebrews 13:15-16
“O LORD, I call upon you; hasten to me!
Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,
and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!” Psalm 141:1-2
