Jesus has told the disciples what they must do to be ready for the end. Now we go back to the whole focus of the end of the gospel account. Jesus is going to be crucified. While the Chief Priest schemes, thinking they are getting the upper hand, the text makes it clear that this is all a part of God's plan.

The final parable in the Olivet Discourse takes the things that Jesus has been talking about and helps us understand just a little bit more. We are called to work diligently and not sit around.

Last week we looked at how Jesus has been telling his disciples about the coming destruction of Jerusalem. This week we continue that discussion, but bring in some other important details. The most important detail is understanding that the New Testament comes in the context of the Old Testament.

This week’s passages contain Jesus' discussion of what it will be like for his followers as the end of the Temple and Jewish age draws near. He tells them a parable about a wedding to help them understand a little more about what he has been teaching them.

After Jesus’ discourse on the church, the disciples are left with some critical questions. The first of them, and the only one we will see right now, has to do with forgiveness. It is clear that Jesus is saying Christians must forgive their brothers and sisters; Peter asks if there is a limit to that forgiveness.

As Jesus teaches us about the church and how we are to relate to one another, he repeats a lesson from a previous discourse. If your eye causes you to sin, then get rid of it. In a world filled with temptations and obstacles, we need to understand what Jesus is teaching us here.
