Wedding Photography : Mistakes Make Magic

Have you ever heard that ⌚ is 💸 ?

Of course you have – because it’s true!

Hear me out: let’s say a client pays you x number of dollars for a session and you spend 12 hours photographing, editing, and organizing everything for that session. 🙈

Now let’s say the same client books you for the same pay and you spend 6 hours on those tasks… you’ve just doubled your hourly rate. See where I’m going with this? 😏

I know from starting my business from the ground up that those things take time. You won’t have it all figured out at first, so little by little, you will want to develop systems that will save you time.

We all know that, when it comes to photography, it’s about more than just the photo session itself. There’s going to be a much greater time commitment than the 7-hour wedding day.

It’s also about how long it takes you to get there, prep your gear, come home, back up your images… all of the things you need to do to give your client the best experience. So when you’re thinking about your time, it’s important to take these things into consideration.

You have X number of hours per month that you can work, and X number of jobs that you can take on. And when you’re taking on that 7-hour wedding job, it’s not only 7 hours. It’s probably closer to 40-60 hours to really complete the job. 😱😱😱

I know that took some of you by surprise, laying it out like that.

Emotional awareness: A photographer’s most subtle skill. Especially when it comes to wedding photography, your ability to intuit and be aware of the emotions around you can be SO invaluable. Don’t interrupt emotional moments, like when you see that the bride and groom want a moment alone after the ceremony. It’s also important to know when to step back and regulate your own emotions and the emotions of those around you to the best of your ability. Answer this: How do you get to the top of the referral lists for your local wedding planners and venues?

If you’re like most photographers, you probably think about:

🎁 Getting them gifts

🥗 Taking them out to lunch

📲 Sending them marketing updates consistently

While these are great bonuses to show your professionalism, it’s really so much simpler thank you think.

All you need is to show them you can do a fabulous job.

Whether you work directly with them or your name comes through word of mouth, they really just care that, when they refer their clients to you, these couples will be in great hands and that you don’t make the planner’s job harder.

Send the gifts, take them to lunch, and give them updates — but let your work speak for itself.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder — unless you’re trying to get a foothold in a new market.

Truth be told, even in a much more “virtual” world, we as photographers still need to establish ourselves in any market with our PHYSICAL presence.

You could have the best SEO in the world, and even be recommended by local venues, but if you’re not THERE building connections, it’s going to be really easy to lose your grip to someone who is.

Of course, if you don’t live somewhere, you can’t be there all the time. When you’re not there, use your portfolio, blog, and social media to highlight your shoots in the area —and to share your knowledge of the region and space.

Start building up your market-specific portfolio, so prospective clients can see that you’ve been there, you know the area well, and you know how to capture that location’s unique magic.

A lot of the time, we correlate "more income" with "more clients;" however, that's not the only way - or even the best way - to go about increasing your bottom line! There are so many things you can do to incentivize and prioritize the clients you already have. After all, those who have already worked with you and trust you are more likely to spend money with you than those who haven't!

If you don't already know, I LOVE to photograph weddings! Weddings are my focus as a photographer, and I have geared my business towards attracting and sustaining long-term relationships with clients who are looking for just that - a wedding photographer.

Do you ever feel like you're just not good enough? Like you're just not worthy of implementing that daunting task on your to-do list? Do you maybe even feel that way RIGHT now??
