Episode 200!?

This week we are giving our thoughts on "Catwoman: Lonely City"!

In a world without Batman…will Selina Kyle’s old wounds tear Gotham City apart? Cliff Chiang writes and illustrates the ultimate Catwoman masterpiece!

Ten years ago, the massacre known as Fools’ Night claimed the lives of Batman, the Joker, Nightwing, and Commissioner Gordon…and sent Selina Kyle, the Catwoman, to prison.

A decade later, Gotham has grown up—it’s put away costumed heroism and villainy as childish things. The new Gotham is cleaner, safer…and a lot less free, under the watchful eye of Mayor Harvey Dent and his Batcops. It’s into this new city that Selina Kyle returns, a changed woman…with her mind on that one last big score: the secrets hidden inside the Batcave! She doesn’t need the money—she just needs to know…who is “Orpheus”?

Visionary creator Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman, Paper Girls) writes, draws, colors, and letters the story of a world without Batman, where one woman’s wounds threaten to tear apart an entire city! It’s an unmissable artistic statement that will change the way you see Gotham’s heroes and villains forever!

This volume collects Catwoman: Lonely City #1-4.

Episode 199!?

This week we are giving our thoughts on "Superman: Secret Identity"!

Collecting the critically lauded 4-issue miniseries written by Kurt Busiek (JLA/AVENGERS, ASTRO CITY) with art by Stuart Immonen (SUPERMAN: END OF THE CENTURY, THOR).

Set in the real world, SECRET IDENTITY examines the life of a young Kansas man with the unfortunate name of Clark Kent. All Clark wants is to be a writer, but his daily life is filled with the taunts and jibes of his peers, comparing him to that other Clark Kent -- the one with super-powers. Until one day when Clark awakens to discover that he can fly...that he does in fact have super-strength! But where did these powers come from? And what's he going to do about it?

Superman: Secret Identity is a four-issue mini-series written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by Stuart Immonen. It was first published monthly, starting January 2004. The title was not released under the Elseworlds banner, but is regarded as a non-canonical story.

The story describes the life of Clark Kent, a man in a world in which superheroes exist only as characters in comics, who suddenly gains the powers of Superman and embarks on a super-heroic career, but keeps his existence secret from the world at large.

Episode 198!?

This week we are giving our thoughts on "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures, Vol. 1"!

Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines, Raphael is cool but rude, Michelangelo is a party dude! The animated Turtles of the original cartoon are back!

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first appeared in 1984, but it wasn’t until 1987 that a catchy theme song and action-packed cartoon helped make them a global phenomenon! Now, in this miniseries, discover four “lost episodes” that follow in the radical two-toed footsteps of the classic animated series.

First, an unexpected power surge leaves the brothers trapped in a virtual training program, facing digital versions of their most fearsome foes, in “VR in Deep Trouble”! Next, a mysterious piece of tech transforms one of Krang’s stone soldiers into a power ballad–belting rockstar, but how long will the change last? It’s a hair metal adventure “For Those About to Rock”! Then Casey Jones gets superpowers, and he can’t wait to up his crime-fighting game. But when Raph and the others learn his powers come at a cost, can they convince “Super Casey” to give them up? And finally, when Baxter Stockman injects Splinter with microscopic mousers, Donny will have to shrink himself down to save his sensei, in “Big Trouble in Master Splinter”!

Writer Erik Burnham (Ghostbusters, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero—Saturday Morning Adventures) authentically captures ’80s pop culture so that it holds true for longtime fans while immediately appealing to today’s younger audience, and artist Tim Lattie nails the cartoon’s signature look.

Grab a slice and settle in with the world’s most fearsome fighting team, the heroes in a half shell! Cowabunga!

Episode 195!?

This week we are giving our thoughts on "Batman: Beyond the White Knight"!

Batman: Beyond the White Knight is an American comic book published by DC Comics under its Black Label imprint. The eight-issue limited series — written and illustrated by Sean Murphy, lettered by AndWorld Design and colored by Dave Stewart — began its monthly publication on March 29, 2022 and ended on February 14, 2023. It is the sequel to both Batman: White Knight (2017–18) and Batman: Curse of the White Knight (2019–20), and is also the fifth installment in Murphy's self-titled Murphyverse line. It is also an adaptation of the animated television series Batman Beyond (1999–2001), with the plot of the comic book being based on the original premise of the TV show.

Batman: Beyond the White Knight takes place 12 years after the events which are described in the previous volume Batman: Curse of the White Knight, which ended with Bruce Wayne exposed as Batman to the general public and donating his entire fortune to the people of Gotham City, and then turning himself in to the police. Since that, the city has evolved into a futuristic megalopolis known as "Neo-Gotham". Following the murder of his father Warren, young Terry McGinnis — under the orders of his employer Derek Powers — steals a technologically advanced Batsuit to become the new Batman and avenge his father's death. At the same time, a middle-aged Bruce escapes from prison in an attempt to rid Neo-Gotham of Batman for good, all while a civil war slowly rages through the city and Powers transforms into the supervillain Blight.

Batman: Beyond the White Knight received critical acclaim from critics and readers alike, with praise for the comic's plot, dialogue and dynamics between characters, art style, and faithfulness to the source material. A two-issue limited series titled Batman: White Knight Presents: Red Hood — which serves as a prequel to Batman: Beyond the White Knight — began publication on August 2, 2022 and ended on the 23rd of the same month. A six-issue limited series titled Batman: White Knight Presents: Generation Joker — which serves as a follow-up to Batman: Beyond the White Knight — began publication on May 9, 2023.

Episode 192!?

In this episode, Lex and Simon revisit their review of the graphic novel "Batman: White Knight" by Sean Murphy. They discuss the unique premise, the art style, character development, and how it compares to other Batman stories.

Premise and Setting

"Batman: White Knight" presents an alternate universe where the Joker, now cured of his insanity, seeks to expose Batman's dark side and become a hero to Gotham City.

The story delves into issues of police brutality and the consequences of vigilante justice.

Art Style and Colors

The art style is praised for its sketchy yet detailed approach, creating a perfect dark atmosphere for Gotham City.

The use of neutral colors contrasts the traditional bright tones of superhero stories, enhancing the overall mood.

Character Development

The reimagining of classic Batman characters like the Joker, Harley Quinn, and Nightwing is well-executed and refreshing.

The Joker's transformation into Jack Napier showcases his genius intellect and cunning nature, making him a formidable adversary for Batman.

Harley Quinn's Role

The story cleverly twists the narrative by revealing that the original Harley Quinn abandoned her alter ego, leaving the Joker unaware of the change.

Harley's evolution as a character and her decision to become the new Joker add depth to her role in the story.

The GTO and Team Batman

The GTO (Gotham Terrorist Oppression) is an interesting addition to the story, consisting of former Batman allies who work with the police.

The Bat-family's new roles and their unique Batmobiles add excitement to the action sequences.

The Sequel Tease

The mention of a sequel book leaves readers intrigued about the future of this alternate Batman universe.

Some elements, such as the Nazi storyline, feel rushed, but they don't significantly detract from the overall enjoyment.

"Batman: White Knight" offers a compelling and self-contained story that challenges the traditional dynamics between Batman and the Joker. The art style and character development are highlights, making it a must-read for Batman fans. The sequel promises to delve deeper into this fascinating universe.
