Founded in 2016, Stages of Freedom has at its core addressing racial inequities in Rhode Island and ensuring that Black Lives Matter. Co-Founder Ray Rickman, Executive Director and Co-Founder Robb Dimmick, Program Director join the program to highlight their mission "To build community and advance racial equity by using the arts and humanities to create and present programming that illuminates and celebrates Black Rhode Island life and culture to a large and diverse audience". The programming SOF provides includes free swimming lessons in order to reduce the high number of drownings in the BIPOC community. This is of particular importance, as summer is upon us and kids will be gravitating to the waterways. Listen as they tout our senior senator, Jack Reed whose assistance in attaining a legislative grant has provided much needed funds to this crucial mission. However, more is needed to help in keeping these kids at the YMCA once they've learned the basics of staying above water. They also discuss the role of slavery in aspects of resistance to swimming and lack historical accuracy in facts. Who knew that out of the Civil War, black folks created Memorial Day or slaves belonging to Thomas Jefferson were responsible for the invention of nails? Take a tour of the museum at SOF to learn these little-known truths. There is some positive advancement in the face of whitewashing history. Major League Baseball is recognizing the statistics of the Negro League, when it was segregated, placing Josh Gibson ahead of Ty Cobb as the all-time career and season batting leader.
