  • Running on Empty | Pastor Jesse Jernigan | 7.26.26 (Sermon)

Are you truly prepared for the return of Jesus Christ, or are you simply anticipating it? There is a significant difference, and the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25 makes that difference impossible to ignore.

In this message from Matthew 25:1-13, we explore one of the most urgent parables Jesus ever told. Ten virgins were invited to the wedding feast. All ten had lamps. All ten fell asleep waiting. But when the bridegroom arrived at midnight, only five had enough oil. The other five were left outside with the door shut.

This message unpacks the full meaning of this parable by exploring the cultural context of first-century Jewish weddings, the three stages of the Jewish marriage covenant, and why the bridegroom's arrival was always unexpected. Understanding this context reveals why Jesus said in Matthew 24:36 that only the Father knows the day and the hour of His return, and why that truth should shape how we live right now.

We also take a deep look at what oil represents in Scripture. Oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, consecration, visible testimony, and spiritual readiness. Without oil, a lamp is just a piece of pottery. Without the Holy Spirit, a believer is just going through the motions. And here is the sobering truth this parable reveals: oil cannot be borrowed. No one can lend you their intimacy with God. No one can transfer their obedience, their holiness, or their Spirit-filled life to you. Church attendance cannot substitute for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

This message also addresses the reality of delay and what it means for believers who are waiting on God. Delay is not denial. The process of preparation is painful, but it is purposeful. As Galatians 6:9 reminds us, in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. There is a fifth season in the kingdom, and it is called due season.

Whether you feel spiritually full or completely running on empty, this message is for you. Fresh oil is available right now. The bridegroom is coming. The Father is watching the room being prepared. And one day soon, He will look at His Son and say, go get your bride.

Make sure your lamp is full when that moment comes.
