  • Week 26 - Lizenn - Half Year Trauma Fight
    Hi
I had a really rough week between tough family issues and the 40°C+ heatwave. So I rushed something with no inspiration but with instruments dear to me. Wanted to make a rock-ish guitar song because guitar, bass and drums are what got me into music thanks to my dad, my sister and my brother in law. And since they are very dear to me and we're going through rough times, it felt like the thing to do. It doesn't tell much per se, because it's just easy harmonies but it was really important to me to make it to the 26th week. Half a year is quite an achievement for a first, I'm very proud and veeeeery tearful.
I'm definitely not stopping there thought !
Thank you for being such a wonderful community and to gave me an opportunity to create and hang on a project for once in my life. Sending y'all a lot of love !

  • Week 26 - BTS - Sync Stratagem Gestalt
I was a little pressed for time this week, so I kept it simple. I picked up a couple of breaks and set them up in an Octo-Rex unit. I then set up a combinator with three different effects that would mangle the break and automated the bypass controls to activate them on command.
I then set up a quick bass and synth part to round out the track.
After mixing and EQing, I mastered the track.

  • Week 26 - Jackmsimpson - Seven Minutes
Originally had something completely different for this week - did a mix and master, but it still needs some more work. Last night (Saturday) I was scrolling the social feeds when a video about the 7 minute theory popped up - in short, supposedly the brain stays active for 7 minutes post-mortem and the biggest moments of your life flash in your head, like a movie. Whether that is true or not, I don't know, but an idea came over me and I rushed upstairs, grabbed a guitar and started strumming. 30 mins later, this was pretty much charted out.
super simple instrumentation and arrangement - again, no flashy production stuff today, as I was the song and it's lyrics to be the focus - I like it.
This weeks original tune will be next week's offering the WB gods!
    Have a great week!
    Lyrics:
If i were to die tomorrow
You'd be in my 7 minutes
If i took my final breaths
I'd see you there in it
    A highlight reel
Of the biggest things you feel
    One final
    One last
    goodbye
    We'll grow old
    Our kids will grow up
Some of us may grow apart
Youre the air that fills our lungs
The blood that fills my heart
If i were to drop down dead
You'd still be in my head
    Saying the the things
    You told me to do
    A piece of advice
    A moment to cry
    One final
    One last
    Time
    We'll grow old
    Our kids will grow up
Some of us may grow apart
Youre the air that fills our lungs
The blood that fills my heart
On the day that I fold
    You'll have the staring role
    Your name up
    Big in the lights
    On that that final evening
I know how you'll be feeling
    One final
    One last
    Goodnight
    We'll grow old
    Our kids will grow up
Some of us may grow apart
Youre the air that fills our lungs
The blood that fills my heart
If i were to die tomorrow
You'd be in my 7 minutes
If i took my final breaths
I'd see you there in it
    A highlight reel
Of the biggest things you feel

  • Week 26 - Tomavatars - Heatwave and Blooming
    Hi everyone!
This week in France was a real nightmare. It was insanely hot and it was unbearable. I had to keep the kids at home instead of sending them to school, and even there, it was too hot.
But after the heat came the storm, and it felt like a fresh start! A breath of fresh air. Blooming spirit.
I started this track on Friday (instead of tonight lol), as part of a trailer I made for MSteppySnap, my latest M4L unit.
I’m not quite sure why I used these synths in this way. Initially, I wanted to create a breakbeat track with a distorted sound and some researches, but I think I was influenced by the wind from the Sahara.
Have a great week and take care!

  • Week 26 - Leo - The Far Future of 2018
Imagine a scifi video game from the 80s about fighting for survival in a world ravaged by climate change.
Quick lil' chiptune based on a melody I wrote in 2018. Nothing new here, but I like the switchup at the end (imploding everything to one track, modulation and rhythm change) and the main drum beat. Those snare "ghostings" have a nice edge to them.
Spent the day helping a friend clear out her childhood homes' basement that was flooded by the torrential rains last weekend. Fun, especially with the current heat wave scorching europe (think it was 39°C today).

  • Week 26 - Dustsucker - Dikke Vent
    What's this? I did a rap!
Featuring my lovely partner, the one and only MC Mini Loemp in the chorus. (cue meme air horn sound effect)
Apologies to all the non-Dutch. It's a tongue-in-cheek brag rap about eating way too much and growing up to be a big fat guy.
› Lyrics‹ LyricsKom op met die zak chips
Je weet dat ik hem leeg trek
Maakt niet uit hoe vaak ik dip
Die shit die doet mij toch niks
Koken? Zal mijn tijd wel duren
    Ga liever naar de friture
Maakt niet uit wat ik ook vreet
    Sonja Bakker, lik me reet
    Elk gerecht maak ik soldaat
's Morgens vroeg of 's avonds laat
Warm of koud, roest mij m'n naad
Als het maar om tjappen gaat
    Snacken uit de automaat
    Barbecue bij jou op straat
Dan kom ik met de auto, maat
    Schakel niet, rij automaat
    Pizzeria speed dial
    Bestellen doe ik freestyle
    Slaatje laat maar zitten,
    Extra mayo en een frikandel
    Dom, lomp en onbekend
    Behalve bij de friet tent
    Later als ik groot ben
    Word ik een dikke vent
    Dikke vent vent, dikke vent

    Slappe slettebakken sla ik
    Voor mijn ontbijt
Loop een rondje met je hondje
    Nee, die hoeft niet aangelijnd
Want ik hou je aan de lijn
    Met mijn wacke domme rijm
Gooi die handjes in de lucht
Bij Fred Teeven op de lijn bus

    Kont in de ellef
    Lijpe flow komt vanzelf
    Want ik ben een..
    Dikke vent vent, dikke vent
Later als hij groot is wordt hij een dikke vent
Later als ik groot ben word ik een hele vette dikke vent
Beat = OP-1 field + M8. Vocal production was done in Pro Tools, mastered in Logic. Took the long way to produce this one.
› the long way‹ the long wayI wasn't expecting to make hiphop thing, but here we are! Half of the beat came together while I was messing around on the OP-1 field. It's a simple lo-fi drum loop with a double layer of CWO that somehow keeps modulating up and down by half a step. I sampled it into the M8 and added a single track of bit-crushed drums on top. That's when it started to feel like it needed some kind of rap.
After a couple hours on the couch watching my partner play The Witcher 3, I had written most of the lyrics. Then I spent a very hot heatwave Saturday afternoon recording the vocals and doing all the post-processing. I used the TE CM-15 mic with the TX-6 mixer and recorded into Pro Tools. My partner had a listen and came up with the chorus hook right there and then. We recorded her vocals in like 2 takes, then she went back to Witchering. What a champ.
Next, I exported a vocal submix to bring back into M8, so I could finetune the instrumental. Made all the stops, variations, and modulations to fit the vocals, then exported the new instrumental into Pro Tools for the final mix tweaks. I knew I wanted to have Sausage Fattener on the master, but it doesn't run in Pro Tools (I do have a wrapper plugin that I really need to get working). So I exported the mix into Logic for the final mastering tweaks. So it was a bit of a journey, but I'm pretty happy with the results and equal parts terrified to put my vocals out there. Luckily most of you won't understand the lyrics heh.

Happy halfway point everyone, 26 down, 26 to goooo!!

  • Week 26 - Paisleyfrog - Scarborough Fair
Let's do something with Dr Frog <3
From the Bristol Renaissance Fair, circa 2018. I've spent a lot of time at ren faires!
Dr Frog and I still haven't had a ton of time for music lately...painted the kitchen, installed a new ceiling fan, changed my kid's oil, assisted with some medical recovery...(although we finally released our second album!). So we thought it'd be fun to do an arrangement. We have an original trad-styled song in the hopper. Let's just say it's....bawdy :)
The initial reaction some might have to this song title is, "Um, Paisley, covers aren't allowed, and this is Simon and Garfunkel." Yes, they recorded a version of it, but Scarborough Fair is a tune with origins in Scotland from the 1600s or so. The song was "collected" in 1947 from a miner in England, and is from the late 1800s or so. That's the version we mainly know today, and that Simon and Garfunkel recorded in 1966 - which was part of the folk resurgence of the 60s. The counterpoint in the S&G version is from another Paul Simon song - that's the "Canticle" in their title.
Scarborough Fair has taken many forms over the years, but there has always been a common central theme: the person telling the story is asking after a former lover, and tells someone to ask them to complete some tasks. If those tasks are completed, they will be lovers again. The thing is, the tasks are all impossible: make a shirt with no seams, and then wash it in a dry well, for example. It's a song about love that cannot be. I've never really looked at the lyrics before, and never realized what a crushingly sad song it is. There are many verses - Dr Frog chose the ones here. S&G made it common to repeat the first verse as the last.
There was a real Scarborough Fair - it was a huge market and festival that ran from 1253 to 1788. It lasted for 45 days, and drew traders and merchants from all over the known world. But what's up with the spice cabinet refrain? It's from medieval lore for what each herb represents:
Parsley is comfort and the removal of bitterness.
    Sage is strength and wisdom.
Rosemary is love, remembrance and fidelity
    Thyme is courage
The refrain as it exists today was most likely borrowed from another song in the late 1800s. Considering the theme of loss and impossible love, the refrain saying "remembrance, strength, love, and courage...with no bitterness"...makes it even more powerful.
I love Weekly Beats, never would have learned this otherwise <3
    › Lyrics‹ Lyrics
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
    Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Remember me to the one that lives there,
For she was once a true love of mine.
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt,
    Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
    Without any seam or needlework,
And then she'll be a true love of mine.
And tell her to wash it in yonder dry well,
    Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Where no water sprung nor a drop of rain fell,
And then she'll be a true love of mine.
And tell her to dry it on yonder thorn,
    Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Which never bore blossom since the world was born,
And then she'll be a true love of mine.
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
    Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Remember me to the one that lives there,
For she was once a true love of mine...
For she was once a true love of mine...
For she was once a true love of mine...
› Lots of production notes!‹ Lots of production notes!
First struggle was finding the key. We had to figure something that was comfortable to sing, was able to find OK on the fretboard (I had chord shapes I liked), and also not be impossible to play on the recorder. The Doctor really likes singing in F, but this song is in the Dorian mode: I am not playing three flats on recorder. Going up two semitones puts us in G Dorian - one flat, very doable. But then my chord shapes had to be capoed on like the 10th fret. No. So, I put new heavier strongs on the guitar and downtuned - the acoustic is tuned to C# :)  The new strings are a bit brighter and buzzier than I like (because C#), but it worked out well all around.
Recording took a bit to get everything together. I ended up recording melody first on soprano recorder so I had something to play around. Looped that, then played guitar under it, then added in other instruments with improvised counterpoint lines. The hulusi from week 23 makes a return - it has a sound that I thought was a little like a medieval shawm. Other instruments are sopranino and tenor recorders. Getting all of them in pitch was a struggle, particularly low notes on the tenor - I've never used pitch correction on wind instruments before, but here we are.
This song is also the debut of my new soprano recorder. :) I had a recorder I found at a rummage sale in college - made of pear wood, and from West Germany. Amazing instrument I got for a dollar. I played that for decades, and at a lot of gigs...until it died one summer in a hot car after a summer gig. Le sigh.
Anyway, that was seven plus years ago, and I never replaced it. Wood recorders are pricey, especially German ones. It was a brand I had never seen before when shopping, Columbia. Then jwh messaged me and asked if I had any recommendations on recorders. Most of what I play is plastic - they can sound good, but wood has a smoothness to it. On a whim, I looked up Columbia (never had before)....and found an eBay seller with new old stock. Columbia was a cheap German 80s brand, and he had dozens still in the packaging. YES PLEASE. Ended up being $16 shipped, which is AMAZING for a wooden German recorder. You can hear it doubling the melody on the last verse :)
Vocals were done in one pass: the Doctor continues to be a one-take wonder <3 We had thought about doing it as somewhat of a round, but didn't record it that way - I built a round manually with chosen phrases to repeat for the last verse. I like how mournful it sounds - her voice gives me chills. Used a light touch of Supermassive as a delay on the vocals.
Sorry, no guitars and drums in this...although I could ABSOLUTELY hear that in my head. That's for another remix :)
The Doctor wanted me to point out that her choice of gender in the lyrics is intentional. This is a song about love that is seen as impossible, and she thought that it was important to give representation to the struggle that people across the world still face...especially during Pride <3
O DAM IT'S THE HALFWAY POINT! Great work everyone...hard to believe the year is half over. Looking forward to listening to everyone's posts....this is the best music community in the world <3
