  • Week 24 - friendlyperiscope - voices
    distorted voices, growling.
had a bunch of things to choose from this week, chose the angry/ambient one.  fun to play with!
all live, as usual.  had some recording issues where everything is clipped somewhere before recording/output, but it wasn't that i was playing too loud.  so somewhere before that.  that's for next week to figure out.
also tried out reaper (not grim), maybe the daw that works best on linux (for me, so far)?  didn't do much with the recording, but now at least won't have to deal with audacity anymore.
i also forgot what exactly the voices are.  it's the filter resonating, yes, but what did i put into it?  is it mostly the filter or mostly other stuff that pokes it into resonance?  who knows.  (maybe i will go find out, maybe not.)

  • Week 24 - onezero - The Cupola
This one was the result of a couple sessions on Saturday, both with the PureSalem Mendiola in standard tuning. I'd wanted to undermine some of my key-center reflexes, and was only partially successful: the pull of C and G is still strong. The first session brought out the themes you hear in the first 30 seconds, plus a few other themes that didn't get used. At that point I wasn't sure where this would go, but it didn't seem promising.
The next session, though, brought out the subsequent themes and the longer solo sections with more inspiring chordal motion. (I'd also tracked a much longer solo that...just didn't work, so we have the earlier, slightly more raw take.) After uploading, I realized that the last two restatements of the theme incorporated a take with different timing that now sounded out of place against the takes I was using, so I slid a few notes earlier or later to match the feel better. (In the solo, the timing is mostly ok, though there are some notable inconsistencies in the dynamic range. Well, we're close to the moment of creation here.)
This is the usual approach of three tracks of PureSalem Mendiola, no pedals, touch of convolution reverb send, and compression/eq/limiting on the stereo mix.
The title comes from The Cupola in Tasmania, which has a prominence of 650m.

  • Week 24 - Ruffian Price - Factory Mission
More retro VGM of dubious authenticity. Five instances of a 4-op FM synth with bitcrushed Roland drums. Looped the arrangement twice so it's like an OSV, lol

  • Week 24 - BTS - Primal Ego
I started to work on trying to experiment with cutting up breaks, building up a bass line to go with it. As I worked, I began to find the results unsatisfactory, so I switched to a ReDrum and programmed in some break style tracks myself.
I added a halftime pad, along with a more aggressive lead to round out the track.
After some final arrangement, I mixed and mastered the track.

  • Week 24 - Jason Nijjer - magnetic decay
Happy with how this one turned out, started with some drone like patches in vcv rack and used some modulation to create a degraded tape like quality to it.  Found a breakbeat that sounded nice, chopped that into some one shots and laid down a typical slow boom bap beat (always a sucker for those).  I like how the bass turned out on this one, it's a preset with some tweaking from Arturia pure lofi.
I'm a huge basketball fan and since I started watching basketball in 1990 the Knicks have always been my team.  It's been a long long time supporting them, finally they got that championship, so to all the Knicks fan's out there, our time has finally come!

  • Week 24 - neon liminal - SNC Sketch 2
Decidedly way off the mark, but moreso. just proved that this approach isn't gonna work for this project, but definitely works for something else.
Tempera with some live guitar recordings > microcosm, Pulsar 23 on a weird industrial loop into the modular for distortion, glitch and reverb, and Grandmother > Zoia filling in some bass. Did one take at about 12 minutes, edited it down to a little less than 7, added a couple sweeps and done and dusted. Oh, also added an additional kick to boost the pulsar, which lost a little oomph since it was using the full mix and not an isolated channel.
There are some noise artifacts in the quiet parts at the beginning... I don't mind them, they're not intentional, but this is a sketch and frankly I don't care lol.
Sum total, this live approach not gonna work for this project. There's other things emerging here that will become something I am sure. We shall see what I chase next.

  • Week 24 - emily - freedom?250
“there’s a message there for everyone and it is that people can unite, that democracy from below can challenge oligarchy, that imprisoned migrants can be freed, that fascism can be overcome, and that equality is emancipatory.” – Angela Davis/"Freedom Is A Constant Struggle...'
