Recently saw a friend at a mutual friend's wedding and mentioned interest in playing the venue. I'm starting to work vocals into these beats to establish a catalog and just maybe get enough material together to perform. Messing with vocal patterns on this track, I think its a good start and will make a more fleshed out iteration to play live (maybe with less filler-type vox)

I'm not sick this week! Hooray! I'm back on the M8 and back to future bass. This is very loosely inspired by Flume and EPROM's version of Is It Cold in the Water. The biggest production note is I got a splice subscription and downloaded some vocal samples to play around with. It still feels tricky to fit in vocals with words, so I chopped and processed an adlib into some interesting sounds. The rest is pretty straightforward m8 synth work:

- impbox's DIA CHORDS instrument for the pads

- plucky wavsynth

- WAVSYNTH wavetable for the bass

- stock kick/snare drums

This track could use some more work to fill in the sections and smooth out the transitions, but it's already 20 minutes until the deadline :O. The M8 tells me that this took me about 3 hours of work time, so I think I'm getting a little faster at throwing stuff together.

I really fleshed this out on the DirtyWave M8 with drum programming and synths. Added the guitars and vocals after the fact.

Recorded into Ardour 9 on AV Linux, all FOSS.

Hey everyone, full disclosure, I meant to shorten a few of these drastically before adding them in but I forgot to, and now I can't erase the file I uploaded because then it won't let me upload another one… So skip through as you please, some of them are drawn out too far, I wish there was a way to replace the audio file.

I have a weird one this week. I was going through my music on my SP404 seeing what I wanted to upload for the week and I ended up deciding to share a bunch of random weird things that I've made that I think would be cool for you to sample. 

I like to make my own samples much of the time and I like to sample weird things, and this is just a collection of weird things I've made to sample at some point and I know I'll never get around to sampling everything, this is just a small portion of the  random  recordings that have on my SP to **SaMpLe SoMeDaY**  ... I thought it would be cool to share and see if anyone wants to use anything and to hear what you make! I'm not expecting anyone to use any of the stuff but I just think it would be kind of cool to come back next week and find that somebody did haha.  It's in no particular order, very random things, please try to enjoy haha, or just skip to the next song if you want to hear real music :)

The idea for this week’s song came a couple of weeks ago as I was writing about forgiveness. I remembered again what a crazy idea it is that God could be both Just and Forgiving. But it’s true. Sometimes the Bible talks about God by personifying his characteristics, like when Righteousness and Peace kiss in Psalm 85:10, or when wisdom gives a speech in Proverbs 8. I’ve followed in that tradition, trying to imagine what would happen if Justice and Mercy got together to negotiate what to do about sinful people.

 

This is quite possibly the weirdest song I’ve ever written. It helped when I came across an interview last week between Mike Errico and George Saunders. Saunders talked about ‘freakifying’ your work, which I take to mean following the weirdness of an idea to its natural freakiness. Inevitably this creates something that only you could have made. I highly recommend this interview. It’s packed full of gems for creative people.

Mercy said to Justice

‘I think that we should talk.

We are both so different

But I’d like to make it work

You and I are both so far apart

But can we try and make a start?’

Justice said, ‘You need to know

I cannot play pretend.

I cannot say that it’s alright

I cannot condescend

When the weak cry out, I can’t ignore

Love was waiting patiently

And hearing all they said

Love could see the things they loved

And see the way they cared

Then, when they had nothing more to say

Love showed them the better way

First he turned to Justice:

‘Let Justice punish me

Then let Mercy do her work

To set the sinner free

I will give myself so they can live

That is what it means to love’

Mercy took a breath and looked away

Justice couldn’t find a better answer

‘How can that be fair?

The innocent would suffer

While the guilty ones are spared!

Are you asking me to be unjust?

I expected more from Love’

And I will break the curse of sin.’

Love began the journey

With nothing to his name

And finished on a lonely hill

Hanging there in shame

And Mercy came with Justice to the cross

And marvelled at the work of Love
