  • Week 22 - formalprocess - Bit Part
This is an excerpt of my part of a patch-relay as the opening act of the Sonic Frontiers experimental music festival at the Brentwood Arts Exchange in DC on Saturday 23 May.  All 7 relay participants were synced to 130 bpm but otherwise free to express whatever they wanted.

  • Week 22 - RPLKTR - [droneday26]
I welcome all critical feedback. Can relicense if you're interested, just ask.
It was drone day on Saturday. My idea this year was to utilize Analog Rytm as the only audio source. That's what I did, multitracked it with Overbridge. The drone sound in the first part is from the HH LAB. The drones in the second part are SY DUAL VCOs. And some distorted toms sprinkled around for variety.
50 BPM 4/4, C-minor. For this year every cover art is a photo I took. Composed, recorded, and produced in Vancouver BC.

  • Week 21 - sleepside - Meeting a Deer God on Yonah Mountain
This is inspired by a hike in which my wife and I saw a deer less than 20 feet (6 meters) away from us, totally unbothered by our presence, majestic in the golden hour light. We both agreed it must have been a deer god.
The bridge directly uses part of the 1928 recording of Vaughn Williams's "The Lark Ascending." (In the USA, this recording is considered public domain).
Other than this, I have used Christian Hansen's Tunnel Bodhran sample pack for low drum, noise for snare, my own lyre for the main lyre part, a triangle synth bass, an FM-based organ, my own recording of a rainy forest, and bone and bug sounds from MrdrCat

  • Week 21 - laguna - Secret samurai
I had an epic idea in my head using the (maybe overhyped?) Tape 16 DAW for sound on sound purposes, but one of my Windows machines, reserved for the task, had a failure and I spent half the weekend fighting about a (now dead) unresponsive SSD drive.
So Linux and Mac it is, then.
This was made is less than 3 hours. Ultra boring beat made as a demo of my new Renoise 3.1.1 kit of the Boss DR220 drum machine. It used an instance of TAL Noise Maker for a very Moroder-esque mono synth, though I never found a way to integrate the line as lead, so I relegate it to just carrier of the vocoder while the whole beat act as a modulator. Sort of an instant singing synth.
The "choir voice" was taken from some of those early nineties sample CD.
Not much variation. I run out of time and finished my upload just 19 seconds before the deadline.
I'm off duty until Friday. Hope to catch up with your songs.
Lots of love, WB family !!!

  • Week 21 - Nicholas - Urban Lasagna
Just playing around with a neat little sequencer trick I found for easy auto-voicing/strumming of chords.

  • Week 21 - Tomatron.Jones - You Know, It's Like, Whatever
A friend introduced me to the music duo Ekcle, an interesting mix of lo-fi, hyperpop, and glitch. That became the initial inspiration for this one, though then I sort of forked off onto my own thing. I spend a decent amount of time time tinkering with some thick bass sounds and automating an FX chain per note-hit. Struggled a bit trying to arrange it, eventually settled on a decent bassline and added some chiptunes sounding drums, some chords, and lots of little glitchy sounding samples. Glitchy IDM meets chiptunes or something?
    * Splice Samples for drums, SFX, some bass sounds
    * Ableton Wavetable + Cradle.io
    * Transit, Valhalla plugins + Ableton stock plugins
    * Gullfoss + Izotope Elements for master
    Total time spent: 4.5 hours
