  • Week 14 - Tide730 - Hells Bells
Been in pain since surgery and haven't had much energy or motivation this week. I had 2 doctors appointments this week, 2 coming up next week, follwed by 2 more the week after. Figured I can use WB as a journal since only a few close friends are on here and they already know whats going on with me.
Anyhow, I used the FM Synth and macrosynth for the bass and that sawish sound at 1:30. Trying to break away from samples and design my own sounds. Baby steps, progress. Another week down.

  • Week 14 - LeCroqueMonsieur - Tout le temps que je cherche
“All the time I’m looking for” in French. Basically the story of my submissions lately.
Alright, the production process on iPhone continues. Still bringing its own challenges and issues, although I think I start to get the hang of it in terms of production.
Initially thought as a Doobie Brother inspired music, with instrumental, it ended up completely differently with lyrics (in French because that’s my extra challenge this year).
This week was more complicated for music. Moving completely threw off the rails my process and I got lost in writing the guitar parts. On top of that (by mistake!) the verse is in 14 beats, so that gave even more challenge for the drums and the bass line and to finish the chord progression is a nightmare in itself because the minor G#7 proved to shift completely the scale and the soloing wasn’t going to cut it when I had short sessions to figure out the parts (I think I had like 5-6 guitar takes max).
Ended up scribbling some lyrics and just shipping it like that. I think it works well for what it aims to achieve. And I feel very happy with the bass and guitar mix.
NB: no organ pr synth here, but a cavaquinho in C with a chorus that sounds like an organ.

  • Week 14 - Nueli - Mais quelle journée ma bonne dame
From my point of view one of my bests. At least in terms of fun writing it.
Like most of the time it started with a 4 tracks loop (drum loop sample, bass, ostinato and a lead), then I built an intro, a transition to 2nd part, an outro. And then my muse descended upon me and I decided to have tempo changes, add a 3rd part in 3/4, and force myself to repeat stuff I like (I hear my stuff too often while composing, but the listener won't get bored by 1 repetition).
    Have a good week everyone!

  • Week 14 - Continuous Nonlinearities - The moody groove
It was my birthday this week, so I indulged myself and ordered a Soma Laboratory Pulsar 23 (in mint green, because if it comes in tasty colours you should get the tasty colour). It came about two weeks earlier than I expected, so I actually got my self-present the day after my birthday, which I will definitely not complain about.
My initial experimentation was fun but became frustrating on reflection - things sounded great while I was doing them, but less so when listening to recordings. The moody grooves stopped being as groovy. I had to embrace that there is no permanence within the Pulsar, I needed to rip it up and start again. I enlisted my Digitakt to act as a sequencer, because frankly I am not great at live sequencing but get along well with a grid sequencer. I still need to figure out how to use the two together beyond this, but I'm pretty happy with the results here.
All sounds Pulsar, except for the Prophet 6 lead and some small guitar. Kinotone Sparks -> Chase Bliss Clean -> Death By Audio Rooms may have become my post-production chain.

  • Week 14 - angellis - MMXXVI - XIV
This is two layers of minifreak droning away with a back bed of me reading William Blake's "The Clod and The Pebble", not that you'd know, but its in there somewhere.

  • Week 14 - HoolieBrown - Red Box Car
Alright so not technically a new song - I wrote this sitting in Juliet, GA outside of a winery there in 2005 or so, and I played it live 1 and only time that night.  I always wanted to go back and record it but I never could get the feel right, life happened, I moved, and I had an old friend ask me about this song a few weeks ago and I had completely forgotten about it.
I scratched out the tracks on the M8, recorded the guitar and vocals into the M8 through an RME babyface, and a couple days later I had a solid start on a mix.
Percussion part is unorthodox, but I tried replacing it and nothing worked as well.
In the DAW I just rode the faders a bit, panned and put a decent rough master on it, but I'm digging the glue I was able to get on it considering all of the stuff bumping around in the low mids.  Hope you enjoy.
    Lyrics
I was on a freight train
    Looking out the door
    of a Red Box Car
    Lonely man beside me
    asks me for the time
    after all this time
Why does it feel like I'm so far away
What makes tomorrow turn into todays
Who makes the world seem to stand on it's end, my friend...
    My friend
    Lookin' out the window
    Staring through the glass
    at my neighbor's yard
    Hear the engine running
    cutting down the grass
    We've come so far
Why does it feel like I'm so far away
What makes tomorrows turn into todays
Who makes the world seem to stand on it's end, my friend...
    My friend

Been drained of energy so i got a bit lazy and again the deadline caught up to me. Kicked my dick in. Maybe in summer ill have more time to get more detailed. Cheers WB fam.

  • Week 14 - rayjkayj - You ‘kay Gahwadge?
Wanted to try out UK Garage with some real gusto but turned out to be Anudda case of
“Ain’t no one got no time for Jeff O’Daniels!”
No fun drum variations or cool switch ups for me.
Oh well it’s still fairly neat.

  • Week 14 - tired_moniker - tired_wb26_14
Was a huge downpour earlier this week. Bummed I only thought to grab some samples near the tail end. I played a little too loose on guitar so things don't quite line up right but had fun working on this and have some ideas to carry forward
