Hey, Weeklies. Thanks for stopping by.

This week's submission is taking me out of hardware a little bit (although there was a microphone involved) so that I can focus on writing lyrics and singing.

This was a challenging song. I had never used a vocoder before, so learning how to properly program it was fun. I also wrote the song and performed it without having an idea about how the song would ultimately be finished. I did fall back generally on the key that I sang the song in, generally in A minor/C major. But I also performed the song at a slightly slower tempo than the song ended up, which also created some unique production challenges.

All of this is to say that I would loved to have spent more time diving deeper and working on this song more, but this month is all about speed to delivery for me. So this is what I am submitting for this week.

Omnichord bitcrushed by Dr. Scientist BitQuest!, and made more broken and weird via Pladask Etterslep and Blomar

Digitakt programming samples of omnichord drums into a pattern resembling the Disco preset so I could get those not-broken and do some midi sync

Lead via Alpha Juno, a patch that the previous owner made called "elegia" (sounds more like "Subculture" though)

Bass (not an arpeggio, I played that live the whole time) and bits from Prophet 6

This week I treated myself to a new synth, after watching lots of videos, and my workmate showing me Absynth, I couldn't resist.

I also wanted to try and write something a bit out of my wheelhouse, so inspired by HEALTH and my old favourite NIN, thought I'd try a bit of the ol' industrial metal.

Very fun, its all drop C# and the chugging on open strings is all there. Absynth through distortion makes up much of the rest, with the NES and Game Boy providing a bit more texture and keep me somewhat grounded in what I like.

Mixing heavy guitars tho? hard! I also went back and did a slighty shorter version as on re-listening it felt a bit saggy. Anyway.. Enjoy x

Edit: I shortened it again! I also had feedback that I used Goldeneye-esque noises. I didn't mean to do this, but I'm very here for 1997 N64 vibes.

This one's reimagining a WeeklyBeat from 2024:

and a reboot of a self-imposed 2024 challenge. One of these years, I want to walk away from WB with a full turn-based RPG soundtrack concept under my belt. Or at least the bones of one.

And this time around, I'll be better organized and better prepared for burnout:

1) Step away when necessary. Return when ready.

2) Follow the heart, not the outline. Make tracks that aren't part of the project to refresh.

3) Tag and label accordingly. Track titles for the soundtrack project will look -{like this}-.

4) Get a checklist together. What kinds of tracks need to be there? Keep the scope reasonable.

5) Work out of order if you need to. You can always come up with a tracklist later.

6) These will not be perfect. Don't kick yourself. Do your best, learn, and do better.

But I ended up liking it so much that I want to save it for later. This was a track that was started on Wednesday. After not being able to figure out a song structure, I opened a new project and started another song Friday evening. I ended up liking that song so much, I decided to save it for a more serious release. By the time I exported the song, I ran out of energy to even consider mixing it.
